Pavel Zacha calls game with an overtime goal for the Bruins. (1:07)

It's not every day that one of the top players in the NHL refers to his division's playoff race as a "pillow fight," but such was the case this past weekend when Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid did so in regard to the 2025-26 Pacific Division.

Saturday was the second time in a three-day stretch that the Pacific teams went winless with six of them in action, which was the immediate cause for McDavid's remarks. From a longer-term standpoint, two Eastern Conference teams that are currently out of playoff position — the New York Islanders and Detroit Red Wings — would be leading the Pacific, and two more — the Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals — would be in second place.

NHL On Tap: Wild host Avalanche, seek 8th straight win

Crosby gets another chance to pass Lemieux; McDavid can extend point streak for Oilers

There are nine games on the NHL schedule for Sunday, with two nationally televised in the United States. Here are five things to watch today, along with the complete game schedule.

The Minnesota Wild (22-9-5) will look to extend their winning streak to eight games when they host the Colorado Avalanche (25-2-7) at Grand Casino Arena (6 p.m. ET; FDSNWIX, FDSNNO, ALT) in a marquee Central Division matchup. Minnesota can close the gap on Colorado in the division; the Wild are third in the Central, eight points back of Avalanche and four behind the Dallas Stars. Minnesota won 5-2 against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday and is 4-0-0 since acquiring defenseman Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks for forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, defenseman Zeev Buium, and a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Hughes has three points (one goal, two assists) since the trade and 26 points (three goals, 23 assists) in 30 games this season. Colorado has won four straight and is 8-1-1 in its past 10 games.

Preview: A Quinn-tessential Matchup in Minnesota

The Colorado Avalanche face Quinn Hughes for the first time as a member of the Minnesota Wild.

Today, the Colorado Avalanche make their final road trip before the holiday break in a rematch against the Minnesota Wild at Grand Casino Arena in St Paul. While the Avalanche have had several noteworthy matchups against Minnesota in the past, this one will be the first meeting with defenseman Quinn Hughes as a member of the Wild.

This game marks the second (and final) visit to the Twin Cities for the Avalanche this season. In the previous matchup on November 28, Nathan MacKinnon opened the scoring early in the first period. Minnesota countered with two second period goals by Kirill Kaprizov until Gabe Landeskog tied the game nearly halfway through the third period. Neither team scored in the overtime session, but Minnesota ultimately came out on top courtesy of a shootout-deciding goal from Matt Boldy for the 3-2 victory. Both goalies were put to the test: Minnesota’s Jesper Wallstedt stopped 39 of 41 shots, while Scott Wedgewood turned aside 37 of 39 shots.
