Splatoon Raiders review – Nintendo’s inky shooter fades to grey

Nintendo Switch 2The single-player offshoot of the quirky and colourful multiplayer series is disappointingly run-of-the-mill

Splatoon is among Nintendo’s most ingenious inventions of the last decade: a series of shooting games whose paint-splattered turf war nature means being bad at shooting is just as valuable as – if not more so than – being good. It is also blessed with an abundance of personality, with vibrant characters, a richly imagined world, and a hipness that the competition can only dream of achieving. Unfortunately, Splatoon Raiders makes it difficult to remember all of this.

The first spinoff in the ink-soaked franchise, Splatoon Raiders is advertised as a single player-focused entry in this primarily multiplayer series. While this is true enough – one can play through the entire game solo just fine – Raiders is clearly best enjoyed cooperatively with up to three others. Players start each session on a hideout ship where they can upgrade their equipment and tweak their play style before heading out on bite-sized repeatable missions, and this structure is tailor-made for teaming up with friends or helping out strangers (the game lets you do either), as each person works towards creating their ultimate squid-kid avatar of chaos.

Nintendo has a new mobile game, Pictonico!, which turns photos into mini-games

Out of the blue, a brand new Nintendo mobile game been announced for both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store this morning. Pictonico! is a new game from Intelligent Systems (and clearly influenced by Wario Ware) that lets you turn your own photos into one of 80 mini-games. It’s set to be released on iOS and Android on May 28, a little over a week from now.

Some of the mini-games are free, but there are two separate purchases if you want to play more of them. The first batch of paid games is $12.99 AUD, while the second is $9.49 AUD. You don’t need to buy these, and the game doesn’t require a constant online connection either.

Surprise! Nintendo Has Announced A New Mobile Game

Nintendo has today announced a new "free-to-start" mobile game called Pictonico! on 28th May 2026.

This new title is co-developed by Intelligent Systems (known for series such as WarioWare, Fire Emblem and Paper Mario) and transforms your mobile's photos into minigames – with 80 minigames and lots of different ways to play.

According to the official description, you'll be able to play a demo of some minigames for free, but a purchase of a "game volume" is required to experience more.

"You can try a few minigames for free, or purchase volumes to unlock up to 80 minigames in total, ranging from easy to pretty tricky. Get ready to laugh out loud when you look back at old photos! You can even take photos with friends on the spot and use them right away."

Nintendo has just announced Wario Ware-like game Pictonico! for mobile phones, and it looks absolutely bonkers

Nintendo sure loves its surprise announcements, and the latest feels especially chaotic even if the game reveal is rather bite-sized. Pictonico! appears to be heavily inspired by Wario Ware and launches next week on mobile phones.

Described (via the official site) as a free-to-start game with "purchases of game volumes" that add to the collection of minigames, Pictonico! looks a lot like Wario Ware and other off-beat Nintendo games; it's easily explained by Intelligent Systems' involvement as co-developer.

Pictonico! releases on 28th May, hitting both iOS and Android devices on the same day with a free "demo version" that includes three different minigames. It's essentially a small taste of the whole package that you can buy in chunks, though the pricing of those DLC packs hasn't been revealed yet.

Nintendo just announced a new Switch 2 bundle that lets you choose your own game

The price hike on the Nintendo Switch 2 we all anticipated was made official earlier this month. Customers in the U.S. will now pay $50 more for the console ($499.99 instead of $449.99) starting later this year. So, if you're already going to have to dish out more money, you might as well get a free game out of it, right?

Launching in early June, participating retailers will be offering a new Nintendo Switch 2: Choose Your Game Bundle for $499.99 (the same price as the console alone will soon be). The bundle includes the Nintendo Switch 2 system along with a download code for your choice of one of these titles: Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, or Pokémon Pokopia. These games cost $79.99, $69.99, and $69.99 respectively.

Sources: Nintendo is planning a new Star Fox and a major Zelda remake this year, but no 3D Mario

A ‘classic-style’ Star Fox game will be released for Switch 2 this summer, it’s claimed

Nintendo is reportedly planning to release a major Zelda remake and a new Star Fox game this year, but a 3D Mario game won’t arrive on Switch 2 until 2027.

That’s according to prominent Nintendo insider ‘Natthehate’, who’s shared a plethora of information on the company’s 2026 plans, which matches with what VGC has heard from our own sources.

In a new podcast, the Nintendo sleuth claimed a “classic” Star Fox revival is planned for release on Switch 2 this Summer, hot on the heels of Fox McCloud’s confirmed appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

It looks like we're finally getting an Ocarina of Time remake

After years of rumors and countless fan-made Unreal Engine tech demos of varying quality, it sounds like we might finally be getting a ground-up remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

That’s according to Nintendo insider NatetheHate, who said in the latest edition of his podcast that a remake of the seminal Nintendo 64 game would be coming to Switch 2 in the second half of 2026. The reliable tipster said he doesn’t know whether Nintendo is making a 1:1 remake of the original 3D Zelda entry, or something "that’s a little more free to explore design choices," adding that he was initially reluctant to share the information he’d received in case we ended up getting little more than an HD remaster. But it sounds like this is a more ambitious undertaking than that.

RUMOR: Super Metroid remake coming from MercurySteam, alongside a new Metroid game

The Nintendo rumor mill has been going strong lately. We just got hit with some big rumors about a potential new Star Fox game and an Ocarina of Time remake, and now more remake talk is here. This time it has to do with the Metroid series, which just saw the release of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond in December.

According to a leaker going by malo932 on YouTube, there is a Super Metroid remake in the works from developer MercurySteam. This is the same team behind Metroid: Dread and the Metroid: Samus Returns remake on 3DS. Supposedly this remake would employ a pixel art style of some kind. In addition, it’s been reported that MercurySteam is also in development on a brand new Metroid game that would serve as a follow-up to Dread.

Nintendo Direct February 2026: Everything we want to see

Nintendo Direct is happening this week, so it's time to round up all our speculation about what the games giant will unveil.

The livestream will air on Nintendo's YouTube Channel at 6am PT/9am ET on Thursday, Feb. 5. It's listed as a Nintendo Direct partner showcase for third-party games, which means the likelihood of seeing any first-party Nintendo games is pretty low, if not zero.

That doesn't mean we can't expect excitement, however. The show is 30 minutes long and features games for both Switch and Switch 2.

Here's what we expect to see, and would like to see, from the showcase.
