    Qantas non-stop flights just flew over Europe’s carbon border

    Project Sunrise is built around ultra-long-haul flying, meaning it falls outside the EC’s full carbon price rules. But the airline has won time, not permanent immunity.

    Twenty-two hours in an economy seat? I can’t begin to imagine what that’s going to feel like, but that’s what Qantas is proposing for its Project Sunrise, non-stop Sydney to London flights. The longest flight I’ve done in economy is the 14.5-hour marathon with Emirates from Sydney to Dubai, and that’s enough for me. By about five hours into the flight I’ve watched a movie, had a meal and now I’m getting restless and checking the flight map, and we’re not even halfway. The last four hours are torture.

    A non-stop London to Sydney flight is coming – could you handle it?

    On a stage at the Airbus headquarters in Toulouse, the chief executive of Australian airline Qantas declares: "The tyranny of distance has finally been conquered".

    Vanessa Hudson was in the French city last week to announce the world's first 20-plus hour flight route.

    The airline first flew what it named the Kangaroo route between London and Sydney in 1947. At the time, it was an odyssey spanning seven stops and four days.

    Those stops have been gradually reduced, with Qantas now stopping only once, in Singapore, on the way through.

    But 80 years after that 1940s venture, the first non-stop flight between the two cities is set to take off from October 2027.

    When Qantas first flew between Sydney and London in 1947 on the “Kangaroo Route”, the journey took a whopping five days and included seven laborious stops. This week, the airline and Airbus announced that its world-first, ultra-long-range aircraft will travel on the same route from October 2027 – taking only 22 hours.

    "A raw, caged animal, drinking, partying and fighting" is the opening line of a new Netflix film about the life of Jamie Vardy.

    Vardy, 39 and now playing in the Italian top flight with Cremonese, uses a harsher expletive to describe himself in the documentary.

    Yet, his story is also refreshing as an underdog, rags-to-riches hero, who is attempting to reflect on his life and career to a group of journalists at Netflix's HQ in London.

    "I don't have time to reflect, to be honest," Vardy says, speaking after the first screening of his Untold UK film, with wife Rebekah watching on quietly but occasionally reacting to questions or her husband's responses.

    “I was just a little freak in the works.” Jamie Vardy is reflecting on his career with the usual levels of self-deprecation and pondering whether anyone could possibly board the same rollercoaster. “It’s not the common way of doing things, is it? I don’t think it will probably happen again, but it did happen for me and it was hard work. It really was tough, but all worth it.”

    Humour has always been a preferred Vardy tool for removing the sting from a serious point. He is speaking to mark a new documentary about his rise, which brought him from warehouse work making walking frames and crutches to scarcely credible levels of Premier League success.

    The lower house sits this week, and senators will quiz officials at Senate estimates.

    Distraught Liberals are now openly contemplating dumping their leader, Sussan Ley, after yet another opinion poll showed them falling behind One Nation and risking an even worse loss at the next federal election than last year's historic drubbing.

    Sussan Ley’s deal to reunite with the Nationals has damaged her credibility and potentially shifted some MPs into her leadership rival Angus Taylor’s corner, according to colleagues who are bracing for a spill as soon as this week.

    As Ley told a press conference the majority of colleagues believed the two parties were “stronger together”, one Liberal MP privately feared the reunion would ultimately lead to the “destruction of the Liberal party”.
