    Southwest Notes: Castle, Ejiofor, Grizzlies’ Draft, Pelicans

    Stephon Castle used some strategy to maneuver his way to the Spurs in the 2024 draft, writes Sam Amick of The Athletic. San Antonio held the No. 4 pick, and Castle was intrigued by the chance to team his perimeter defensive skills with an elite rim protector like Victor Wembanyama,

    “I was just looking on the defensive side of things (in San Antonio), where being able to pair with Victor was definitely a plus in my eyes,” Castle said. “I just thought it would have been a perfect fit, and I feel like it was.”

    To reach the Spurs, Castle had to get past the Rockets, who held the third pick. Castle was aware of coach Ime Udoka‘s interest in him, but preferred not to join a team with a veteran point guard already in place. Houston had Fred VanVleet, so Castle opted against holding a private workout with the Rockets. The strategy worked, as Houston selected Reed Sheppard, and Castle went on to win Rookie of the Year honors and become a fixture on a young team that’s already in the NBA Finals.

    Stephon Castle 'Sent Signals' During Draft to Avoid Rockets

    The current iteration of the Houston Rockets is comprised of a litany of young prospects, with a blend of proven veterans with championships on their resume, like Kevin Durant, Fred VanVleet and Jeff Green. Prior to Ime Udoka’s arrival in 2023, the Rockets' infrastructure looked much different. 

    Under Mike D'Antoni, Silas's predecessor, the Rockets lacked youth and were one of the league's oldest teams. Houston underwent a full scale rebuild, unsurprisingly, to address that scarcity of youth, after James Harden and Russell Westbrook deemed it time to swap jerseys once more.

    Stephen Silas, Udoka's predecessor, was in. The Rockets essentially became an amateur team. A glorified AAU team, if you will.

    The Knicks‘ usage of Karl-Anthony Towns as a point center in the seven games leading up to Tuesday’s game vs. Cleveland resulted in a 130.5 offensive rating, but the plan hit a snag in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals, writes Zach Braziller of The New York Post. The Cavaliers‘ talented frontcourt duo of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen did a better job of neutralizing Towns, who scored just 13 points on 14 shots and had five assists, his lowest single-game total since head coach Mike Brown tweaked the Knicks’ offensive game plan.

    “We do feel like we have the personnel to bother him. We’ve got multiple guys who can put pressure on him,” Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson said. “We’ve gotta be really good with our off-ball defense. They’ve definitely shifted schematically like everybody knows. It’s been … it’s high level so it’s going to be a big part of the series.”

    Knicks made a Donovan Mitchell adjustment the Cavaliers have no answer for

    Of the many adjustments the New York Knicks made in Game 1 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the decision to have Landry Shamet guard Donovan Mitchell isn’t receiving enough attention. While a surface-level tweak upon first consideration, it’s actually a wrinkle with downstream ramifications for which Cleveland has no answer.

    Shamet ended up spending more time opposite Mitchell than anyone else on the Knicks. On those occasions, the Cavs offense as a whole averaged just 0.81 points per possession. That alone validates the proof of concept. 

    Except, this isn’t just about Shamet hanging with Mitchell. (He did.) It’s about what it does for the rest of the Knicks defense, and how difficult it is for Cleveland to counter.

    Wolves Notes: Randle, Gobert, Connectors, Reid

    In Julius Randle‘s two seasons in Minnesota, Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch has never been publicly critical of the three-time All-Star, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

    However, that changed after Friday’s loss to Portland, when the Wolves were up 104-103 with 35 seconds remaining and gave up a pair of offensive rebounds, eventually resulting a Jerami Grant three-pointer that put the Blazers ahead for good. Minnesota gave up 18 offensive boards in the game, while Randle — who is averaging a career-low 6.8 rebounds per game, Krawczynski notes — had five boards and only three on the defensive glass.

    “All we gotta do, we’re up 104-103, and all we have to do is get a rebound and we can’t,” Finch lamented. “There’s like a lag time from the time the shot goes and we take a breath and we look up. They’re flying around and we’re delayed in our reactions. It’s been that way for a while. It’s just not good enough.

    NBA Notes: Timberwolves, Julius Randle, Spurs, Devin Vassell, Jae Crowder

    For maybe the first time publicly, Timberwolves coach Chris Finch took aim at Julius Randle after Friday’s loss to Portland, as detailed by Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic. It came down to one thing: Rebounding.

    “All we have to do is get a rebound and we can’t,” Finch said.

    The Wolves gave up 18 offensive boards, including the sequence that led to Jerami Grant’s go-ahead three. Randle finished with just three defensive rebounds, and Finch made sure that did not go unnoticed.

    It is not something you usually hear from him, especially when it comes to Randle. But as Krawczynski noted, Minnesota is in a tight playoff race, and the tone is starting to reflect that urgency.
