    EV sales have jumped dramatically since the outbreak of the war against Iran prompted a spike in global fuel prices. Sales climbed by 50 per cent in March, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, and EV rentals have also boomed.

    Electric truck development and building more stations to charge them will be core pillars of a state’s revamped electric vehicle strategy designed to ease the pressure of rising fuel costs.

    The New South Wales government unveiled its 2026 EV strategy on Tuesday in an effort to give confidence to motorists hesitant about switching from their increasingly pricey petrol cars.

    Rolling out more fast-charging stations in regional and remote areas to encourage EV take-up among non-city dwellers will be one of the top priorities in the $100m package.

    Second-hand EV sales more than double as drivers avoid petrol shock

    Sales of second-hand electric vehicles more than doubled in the last month as rising fuel prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East sent motorists looking for alternatives to petrol and diesel cars.

    Figures compiled for automotive dealerships recorded a 138 per cent rise in sales between February and March – and a massive slump in supply – with Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y the most popular cars on the second-hand market. EVs made by MG and BYD were also popular purchases.

    Road linking Sydney to western NSW shut by damage to 194yo bridge

    The Great Western Highway, linking Sydney to the state's west, is shut after damage to a 19th-century bridge was discovered.

    Over the weekend the eastbound lanes were shut but overnight on Sunday further cracks and movement were identified, forcing the closure of the westbound lanes.

    Geotechnical crews remain on the scene conducting assessments and emergency repairs, but the timeline for reopening is unclear.

    The main road linking Sydney to western New South Wales has shut after cracks were detected in a bridge built by convicts.

    The Great Western Highway is shut in both directions after further safety concerns were identified.

    Transport for NSW said crews had been working around the clock carrying out thorough geotechnical assessments at Mitchell's Causeway, also known as the Convict Bridge, after a defect was identified last Thursday.

    On Monday morning, cracks were identified in the pavement of the westbound lane and geotechnical monitoring confirmed movement of the road's sub structure.

    Transport for NSW deputy secretary road maintenance and resilience Matt Fuller said safety was the priority.

    Highway fully closed at Victoria Pass after new defects discovered

    UPDATE MARCH 9: Both lanes of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass have been closed following the discovery of further defects.

    Cracks in the pavement were identified on Sunday night, March 8 and geotechnical monitoring confirmed movement of the road's sub structure.

    This means both lanes are now closed between Lithgow and Mount Victoria until further notice, with diversions in place.

    Transport for NSW Deputy Secretary Road Maintenance and Resilience Matt Fuller said safety is the priority.

    "Following the information received in the early hours of this morning, we have closed both lanes of the highway to ensure safety for the travelling public," Mr Fuller said in a statement on March 9.

    NSW Premier Chris Minns has for the first time indicated when he intends to call time on his political career, revealing he will not be in parliament when Metro West opens in 2032.

    Asked at a media conference for his “dream for how this city looks” in 2032 when the metro opens, Minns revealed that he would not be premier in 2032 and would be a member of the public. There will be an election in 2031.

    “Well, I won’t be here, at least in this role, but look, as a citizen, I hope, I genuinely hope, that we can make a massive impact in housing affordability for young people,” Minns said.

    NSW's first female governor Dame Marie Bashir dies aged 95

    NSW Premier Chris Minns has announced a state funeral for Dame Marie Bashir, the first female governor of the state.

    Dame Marie served in the role between 2001 and 2014, having previously worked as a clinical psychiatrist.

    Dame Marie Bashir, who became the first female governor of New South Wales and held the post for 14 years, has died, Premier Chris Minns has announced.

    In a statement released on Tuesday night, Mr Minns described her as "an extraordinary Australian and one of New South Wales’ most respected public servants".

    He announced a state funeral would be held for the "deeply loved mother of three children and six grandchildren".

    The pool includes funds from overpayments, uncashed cheques, dividends, refunds, and other amounts owed to individuals the government has not been able to contact.

    The funds go unclaimed in instances including when people forget to update their names or contact details with a business, lose important paperwork or when estates are unaware of funds belonging to deceased relatives.

    When Garry Morgan arrived home on Friday afternoon, his rural mid-north coast property was surrounded by a “big plume of smoke”. Less than twenty-four hours later, two houses on his street would be lost, and its surrounding forest reduced to blackened skeletal remains.

    Morgan’s township of Bulahdelah, around 235km north of Sydney, has become at the centre of a tragedy after a veteran firefighter died on Sunday evening when he was struck by a falling tree, marking what the NSW premier called a “foreboding start” to the bushfire season.

    A firefighter from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service has died after being crushed by a falling tree near a bushfire on the Mid North Coast. 

    The 59-year-old man was assisting with bushfire prevention work at Nerong on Sunday night when the incident occurred.

    A crime scene has been established and WorkSafe has been notified.

    A community is mourning the death of a firefighter, as the days-long blaze he died battling flares further.

    The experienced firefighter was helping colleagues prepare for a tactical burn north of Newcastle when he was struck and killed by a tree on Sunday night.

    Australia’s black type system under fire amid threat of international downgrade

    The peak breeding body in the industry’s heartland of NSW has called on the Racing NSW (RNSW) board to “stand down” amidst concerns that Australia could be demoted from Part I of the international Blue Book.

    Thoroughbred Breeders NSW president Hamish Esplin made the call as Australia’s black type situation – a suite of NSW races given domestic upgrades that the Asian Racing Federation (ARF) has not recognised under the international pattern – continues to be at an impasse. 

    It comes as the ARF has also stated races including Randwick’s Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m), and Perth’s Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) were eligible to be downgraded, based on ratings data.

    The world’s most powerful battery storage project under construction north of Sydney has been hit by a major failure of one of three giant transformers, creating a significant headache for the BlackRock-owned developer and putting pressure on the transition away from coal power.

    The $1 billion Waratah super battery is being built by Akaysha Energy on the site of the former Munmorah coal power station near Budgewoi. An internal memo sent by the chief executive of the BlackRock-owned business, Nick Carter, says the transformer suffered a “catastrophic failure” last month.

    ‘Catastrophic failure’ at Waratah Super Battery in Australia

    Akaysha Energy has struck trouble at its Waratah Super Battery in Australia, set to be one of the largest batteries in the world in both power output and capacity at 850 MW / 1,680 MWh. One of the BESS plant’s three high-voltage transformers has suffered a “catastrophic failure,” just days from final testing, according to reporting from The Australian Financial Review, leading to significant delays.

    The details emerged from an internal memo sourced by the newspaper. In the memo, Akaysha CEO Nick Carter acknowledged that one of the three 350 MVA high-voltage transformers, supplied by Wilson Transformer Company, suffered a “catastrophic failure” during testing over a weekend in November.
