'What's the lowest number you'll perform for?': Rove's awkward MICF gig
"We were kids who weren't trying to do or be anything," the Doug Anthony All Stars' Paul McDermott (centre) says. "It was glorious." (ABC Archives)
Paul McDermott doesn't remember a lot from the first Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) 40 years ago, where he performed as part of the now-legendary musical comedy group, the Doug Anthony All Stars.
He has only vague recollections of the troupe's early ad-lib-heavy shows, like "performing in the middle of Victoria Parade, where the trams go through".
But it'd be hard to forget falling backwards onto a beer bottle mid-gig.
McDermott's memories of the first MICF are hazy because "it was a long time ago and [he's] indulged a lot in the intervening years". (ABC Archives)

Five acts you'll want to say you saw first at this year's Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Celebrating its 26th year, Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Comedy Zone has a proud tradition of introducing the country’s next wave of comedy talent to audiences, and this year’s lineup is no exception.
Five comedians from across Australia are bringing wildly different styles, backgrounds and perspectives to the stage, all united by one thing: they’re genuinely funny, and the rest of the country is about to find that out. Comedy Zone’s alumni list reads like a who’s who of Australian comedy, previous years have welcomed Hannah Gadsby, Ronny Chieng, Aaron Chen, Danielle Walker and Celia Pacquola.
