Cummins' Odyssey: Aussies embark on legacy-defining year

Australia's veteran unit have achieved just about everything in international cricket. But against Bangladesh in Darwin they begin a 12-month run unlike any seen before

Before Cape Town, the MCG, Chennai, the MCG again, or Lord's, there is Darwin. Along with Mackay, set for its Test debut next week, Australia's north is the remote start line for a quad-continental 2026-27 adventure.

In a year's time, Pat Cummins' men will be a fortnight removed from an Ashes tour that caps a 12-month stretch of Test cricket which will be the first, and probably the last, of its kind. By then Australia will know whether beginning their legacy-defining stretch of games with the oldest XI they have fielded in a century was masterstroke, lunacy, or somewhere in the middle.

Photo reveals major Aussie Test selection hint; Head’s cheeky endorsement — Cricket Daily

A picture from a fielding session in Darwin has revealed a huge hint on who the Australians will roll out for the first Test against Bangladesh starting on Thursday.

It appears that all-rounders Cam Green and Beau Webster will both be picked for the opening Test after cricket journalist Bharat Sundaresan posted a picture to social media showing both Green and Webster in the slips cordon.

Webster was pictured at first slip, next to keeper Alex Carey and Steve Smith at second slip with Green in his preferred position of gully.

Allrounder Beau Webster insists his number one asset is being one of Australia's top batters, which is why he is determined to hold his place in the Test team whether Cameron Green is in it or not.

The 32-year-old suggested he is likely to bat at No.7 in the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin, which would likely position fellow allrounder Green at No.5 and wicketkeeper Alex Carey at No.6.

Webster's five Test fifties in eight Tests at an average of 41.09 confirm why he is in the team, but throw in his 11 wickets at 24.54 and the value he offers becomes clear.

The Odyssey Audience Reviews: Epic Filmmaking That You Need to See on the Biggest Screen Possible

There plenty of literary classics that find their way to the big screen over and over again as decades pass, but there aren’t many that are as old as Homer’s Odyssey, and there are even fewer that have been adapted with the kind of epic scale and Hollywood budget that Christopher Nolan has utilized to bring The Odyssey to life. Starring Matt Damon as the Greek hero Odysseus, who sets out on a perilous journey home after fighting in the Trojan War, the film has garnered rave reviews from critics, who have called it one of Nolan’s most impressive efforts.

‘The Odyssey’ Galloping to $120M in Muscular Box Office Opening

Christopher Nolan's mythological epic continues to rise as the star-studded adaptation from Universal eyes the year's best live-action debut.

Christopher Nolan‘s box office journey with The Odyssey looks to be one for the books, as Universal Pictures‘ star-studded adaptation of the classical Greek mythological tale gets off to a rousing start in its opening weekend.

Starring Matt Damon as the heroic Odysseus, the epic feature is fending off competition with $51.2 million on Friday from 3,900 North American screens, including Thursday previews. Earning an A CinemaScore from audiences, the film is eyeing a $120 million-plus frame, which would make it 2026’s biggest live-action opening, with only Toy Story 5 ($159 million) and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131 million) debuting above it. The Odyssey is also set to claim the top R-rated opening of the year and Universal’s highest weekend launch ever for an R-rated movie.

The Odyssey: is Nolan adaptation worth the hype? – The Latest

Christopher Nolan’s star-studded take on Homer’s Odyssey has received rave reviews from critics and is one of the most hotly anticipated films of the year. The three-hour Imax blockbuster has an estimated budget of $250m and a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Zendaya and Tom Holland. But will it live up to expectations? Annie Kelly speaks to film editor Catherine Shoard

Only 25 U.S. theaters can show 'The Odyssey' the way it's meant to be watched. Here's where they are.

Christopher Nolan's epic adaptation of The Odyssey has arrived in theaters on a wave of critical acclaim — but not every screening will look the same.

The Oppenheimer director's latest blockbuster, based on Homer's ancient Greek epic, stars A-listers including Matt Damon, Zendaya and Tom Holland. But unlike most big releases, the excitement isn't just about seeing the movie — it's about where you see it.

Only a small number of IMAX theaters in the U.S. have the equipment needed to show the movie as it was intended. Those screenings have become some of the hardest tickets to get, with many selling out after going on sale a year before release.

Friday essay: I’ve been reading The Odyssey my whole life. Nolan’s film version is exhilarating – but not perfect

I first read The Odyssey during the summer holidays when I was 15 years old. Parked under the shade of the mulberry tree in our Brisbane backyard, I would read, grab a few mulberries, then read some more, my fingers sometimes staining the pages dark purple. It was a secondhand Penguin Classics edition, translated by E.V. Rieu, its yellowing paper and creased spine, to my teenage eyes, somehow as ancient as the work itself.

Every time I read the Homeric epithet “wine-dark sea” – one of the repeated formulas that bear the imprint of the epic’s oral beginnings, such as “dawn, fresh and rosy-fingered” and “Zeus the thunderer” – I’d feel as though my purple fingerprints had somehow become part of the poem.

There’s no denying it – Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey might be one of the greatest movies of all time

Review: The night before I was set to watch The Odyssey, I had a dream that I was on set with Christopher Nolan. When I woke up at 2am, I couldn’t get back to sleep, lying there like a kid on Christmas Eve.

All this to say, I was clearly excited to see the movie, and my expectations were high. But not only did The Odyssey meet my expectations, it far exceeded them.

Matt Damon stars in the film as Odysseus. The story follows his journey home after the Trojan War. Universal Studios

Writing this review is one of the more difficult things I’ve done in my career, simply because The Odyssey left me speechless.

The Odyssey review – Nolan goes god-tier with breathtaking epic of men, monsters and moral metamorphosis

Doing full justice to the Homeric legend, Christopher Nolan amasses an epic cast to convey the true cost of war with film-making of thrilling ambition

A classicist’s verdict: soulful hero flatters our times as women and nuance pushed overboard

Christopher Nolan reinvents the Homeric legend as a colossal origin-myth story of postwar disillusion, an epic ordeal of anguish witnessed by the dead and presided over by capricious deities who participate on almost equal terms with the humans. It speaks to the generational pain of PTSD; plenty of soldiers come home in person after any war promptly enough, but arriving back to their prewar state emotionally or spiritually can take years or decades and may never happen at all. The invisible odyssey of anguish is punctuated by flashback episodes, hallucinations, confrontations with the arbitrary gods of dysfunction. And all the time the spouses and children cannot move on with their lives.

The Odyssey has been making headlines for months – so what’s the movie actually like?

Christopher Nolan has a way with a time paradox. Not content with constructing narratives that run backwards – or whatever was meant to be happening in 2020 sci-fi thriller Tenet – his big-budget adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey gambles that he can take one of the oldest stories in Western culture and make it feel new.

Drums pound, eager listeners lean forward in torchlight, and a bard (Travis Scott) summons up the figure of a man trying to get home, the long way round. That man is Odysseus (Matt Damon), Greece’s craftiest warrior, on his way back from the Trojan War, while his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) waits patiently and his son Telemachus (Tom Holland) seeks him in turn.

‘The Odyssey’ First Reactions Are Raves for Christopher Nolan’s ‘Astonishing’ Epic and ‘Flawless Filmmaking’: ‘Breathtaking, Bold and Perfection’

Christoper Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has finally been unveiled to members of the film press, who are calling the Oscar winner’s adaptation of Homer’s epic a “staggering achievement” with “flawless filmmaking.” It appears Nolan has another huge hit on his hands.

“A filmmaking feast,” wrote Collider’s Peri Nemiroff. “A grand and gripping rendition of Homer’s epic, and one that feels uniquely Christopher Nolan. It’s sincerely hard to imagine any other filmmaker on the planet being able to bring that source material to screen with this much scale, scope and heart.”

Discussing Film managing editor Andrew J. Salazar called the movie a “staggering achievement,” while IndieWire’s David Ehrlich noted “the last act rewards the journey” despite some clunkiness along the way.

Movie MAGA Tried to Cancel Scores Astonishing Rave Reviews

Christopher Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey is being lauded by critics, despite MAGA's attempts to condemn the film before it was even made public. Variety called it "an astonishing achievement," adding that the performances from the star-studded cast were "genuinely grand." The Independent said, "In The Odyssey, Nolan showcases visual trickery in a way you've never seen a few before." Time Out's film critic declared the film is a "dizzying mix of craft and spectacle that's built to last," and described it as "dense but accessible, packed with career-best work from the stacked cast." IndieWire's editor-at-large predicted Best Actor award nominations for Matt Damon, who plays Odysseus. Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes movie critic Erik Davis deemed the 3-hour spectacle an "absolute triumph" and crowned Oscar winner Nolan "one of the great filmmakers of our time."

"I Don't Know How the Hell We're Going to Do This" – Christopher Nolan and the Cast on The Odyssey

“I don’t know how the hell we’re going to do this. I don’t know how the hell we’re going to do that.”

That was Matt Damon’s initial response upon reading the script for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, an adaptation of the ancient Greek epic poem by Homer in which Damon stars as the central figure, Odysseus. The story charts the Greek king’s return home from the Trojan War, facing monsters and mythical creatures in an effort to reunite with his wife and son. Damon and his co-stars Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, as well as director Christopher Nolan, joined Jacqueline Coley to talk about Nolan’s new film.

Trailer offers glimpses of Matt Damon as mythological hero Odysseus, Tom Holland as his son Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as his wife, Penelope

The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey has been released.

Starring Matt Damon as mythological hero Odysseus, the epic film retells the story of Odysseus’ 10-year voyage back to his homeland of Ithaca after the Greek victory at the siege of Troy.

The trailer offers snippets of the main players, including Damon, Tom Holland as Odysseus’s son Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Odysseus’s wife, Penelope, and Robert Pattinson as Antinous, one of the crowd of suitors vying to marry Penelope.

'The Odyssey' Trailer: Cyclops and Evil Robert Pattinson

Universal has released a new trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s “The Odyssey.” The latest glimpse into the world of Homer’s Greek epic shows Matt Damon’s Odysseus doing battle with the Cyclops, as Robert Pattinson’s villainous Antinous tries to take the throne of Ithaca.

The trailer debuted first on Monday night’s episode of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.”

In addition to Damon as the titular seafaring hero, the film also stars Anne Hathaway as Odysseus’ wife, Penelope; Tom Holland as their son, Telemachus; Pattinson as Ithacan suitor, Antinous; Zendaya as goddess of wisdom, Athena; and Charlize Theron as goddess of witchcraft, Circe. The enormous cast also includes Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, Jimmy Gonzales, Elliot Page and Jovan Adepo among dozens of other stars depicting characters from the epic poem.

The New 'Odyssey' Trailer is Astonishing

Christopher Nolan may have directed the biggest movie of the year yet again.

We have an absolutely humungous new trailer for the Odyssey from Christopher Nolan, which gives us a glimpse of some of the epic shots he captured with IMAX cameras.

My jaw was on the floor while I watched all this new footage, and you really got to see the breadth of the story and cast.

The Odyssey teases a film that blends the grit of ancient warfare with the psychological depth Nolan is known for, all captured on large-format film.

Nolan’s adaptation stars Matt Damon as a weathered, bearded Odysseus. And when we meet him, he'd been begging to go home.

The Odyssey Definitely Has a Better Script Than Avengers: Endgame, Tom Holland’s Huge Praise For Christopher Nolan Makes It Clear

Tom Holland's absolute statement about the script of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey hints at it being better than Avengers: Endgame.

Join 100K+ fans and never miss breaking news, fan theories, trailers & exclusive content.

Tom Holland is excited to be part of Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey alongside a star-studded ensemble. He heaped praise upon Nolan’s work based on Homer’s epic poem. The actor, who plays Telemachus in the movie, told Agence France-Presse back in September that The Odyssey is “the best script I’ve ever read.”

Holland is most famous for his turn as Spider-Man in the MCU, appearing in the Sony-Marvel Spider-Man movies and the Avengers movies. Marvel fans might be slightly offended that he hailed Nolan’s script over Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Interestingly, Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives two weeks after Nolan’s film, making this year a big one for Holland.

Tom Holland’s 2026 Pivot: Why His Next Spider-Man Move Could Redefine His Career Beyond Superhero Stardom

Tom Holland is heading into a make-or-break stretch that will test whether he can keep his balance between franchise gravity and a more varied acting identity. The clearest near-term marker is his next Spider-Man film, set for release on July 31, 2026, a date that effectively turns the second half of next year into a referendum on where Holland sits in Hollywood’s hierarchy: dependable blockbuster anchor, or something broader.

The timing matters because audiences are more selective than they were during the peak of the superhero boom. A Spider-Man release is still a cultural event, but it no longer guarantees a blank-check era for everyone involved. Holland’s next steps will show whether he can convert superhero familiarity into long-term range, rather than letting the mask define the ceiling.

Wuthering Heights to The Odyssey: 16 of the most exciting films coming up in 2026

From Emerald Fennell's divisive new adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights to Christopher Nolan's wildly anticipated ancient Greek epic, here are BBC critics' picks of the films to see in the year ahead.

Emerald Fennell's bold take on Emily Brontë's 1847 novel is already one of the year's most divisive films. The trailer alone evoked both fascinated anticipation and pearl-clutching resistance. On social media, Brontë purists have objected to everything from the film's raw sexiness to its casting, complaining that Margot Robbie is too old to play the teenage Cathy and Jacob Elordi too white to play Heathcliff, described in the book as "dark-skinned". But Fennell, who proved herself to be a daring original with Promising Young Woman and Saltburn, knew she was taking an iconoclastic approach. "I wanted to make something that was the book that I experienced when I was 14," she has said, describing it as "primal, sexual". Her version of those two doomed, passionate lovers is also stylised, with bright-red costumes and red-orange skies. Owen Cooper of Adolescence plays the young Heathcliff and Hong Chau is Cathy's loyal maid, Nelly. And if you don't feel like channelling your inner teenage girl, the year brings a more traditional adaptation of a 19th-Century classic, Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Elinor Dashwood in the story of marriageable sisters and their pursuit of love. (CJ)

If you listen to the people in the know, they will tell you how bad things are in the movie business. Movies are doomed. Streaming has won. The weird thing is, 2025 felt like a very busy year at the movies. And the 2026 film calendar is already jam packed with big-ticket titles.

To be fair, it is dominated by franchises, sequels and safe bets. A little bit of tension in the economy, and everyone gets risk-averse. But if you thought the movie biz was now all about Netflix and its made-for-television library, then you might be surprised how often you’re going to be down at your local cinema this year.
