Arsenal agree to sign Villa defender Konsa: reports

London (AFP) – Arsenal have agreed to sign England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a deal worth at least £50 million ($68 million), according to reports on Wednesday.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has been chasing a centre-back since the end of last season and appears set to land Konsa after returning with an improved offer.

The Premier League champions reportedly had a bid for Konsa rejected earlier in the transfer window and briefly switched their attention to Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah.

Having renewed their interest in Konsa, Arsenal are on the brink of sealing a deal for the 28-year-old.

Konsa, who featured for England at the recent World Cup, will have a medical before completing his move to the Emirates Stadium.

Ezri Konsa is on the verge of swapping Aston Villa for Arsenal, The Athletic reported on Wednesday afternoon. The reigning champions of England want to bolster their defence with William Saliba and Jurriën Timber still injured.

Aston Villa's asking price still sits above what Arsenal are willing to pay, although the gap is expected to close in the coming days.

Transfermarkt values the 28-year-old defender at €45 million and he is under contract in Birmingham until mid-2028.

Live updates: Iran and US make ‘encouraging progress’ in crucial talks, mediators say

Discussions were conducted in a "positive and constructive atmosphere," Qatar and Pakistan said. Talks had looked shaky after Trump's comments angered the Iranian delegation and stalled talks.

    • Switzerland talks: Recently concluded talks between the US and Iran were “positive and constructive” according to mediators Qatar and Pakistan. A High Level Committee to oversee mediation and a “line of communication” for the Strait of Hormuz are being set up, mediators said. Technical talks will continue this week in Switzerland.

    • Tense moments: Talks had previously stalled when President Donald Trump angered Iran’s top negotiator by threatening the Tehran delegation. Trump told Fox News the US could resume bombing Iran and “take over” the Strait of Hormuz if a deal is not reached.

US-Iran negotiations end, technical talks will continue after Trump shakes talks with threats

A team led by U.S. Vice President JD Vance is to meet with Iranian negotiators led by parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for talks on Tehran’s nuclear program as part of a fragile deal to end the Iran war.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance said Sunday there was an opportunity to “turn over a new leaf” with Iran as the sides held talks aimed at building out the interim deal to end the war in Iran reached by the two sides last week. But even as Vance called on Tehran to build on the moment, President Donald Trump threatened to restart strikes on Iran for its support of Hezbollah militants in Lebanon or if it moved to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Offer from Iran’s president not to attack neighbours provokes internal backlash

As Masoud Pezeshkian tries to de-escalate conflict, hardliners urge installation of new supreme leader to marginalise the president

The surprise offer by the president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, not to attack countries in the neighbourhood so long as their airspace and US bases within their territories are not used to attack Iran has provoked a storm inside the country as the military appeared to contradict him, if not outright overrule him.

There were also calls for a new supreme leader to be installed as quickly as possible, as a means of marginalising the president. Attacks on facilities in Bahrain and elsewhere have continued, and there were unconfirmed reports that Bahrain had become the first Gulf country to fire back at Iran.

Why are Iranian leaders sending mixed messages on Gulf attacks?

Attacks on the Gulf continue as President Pezeshkian’s remarks receive pushback from the powerful IRGC.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has offered an apology to neighbouring countries that have been subjected to Tehran’s retaliatory strikes since the United States and Israel launched a military offensive on the country.

But Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) expressed its disapproval of the president’s remarks on Saturday, warning neighbouring countries that Tehran would continue attacks if US and Israel used their territory to attack Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is not going to stop attacks while Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran’s parliament, underscored Tehran’s right to self-defence.
