A fire has broken out at one of Australia's two remaining oil refineries, with emergency services responding to reports of "explosions and flames".

The blaze was not yet under control as of early Thursday morning, according to Fire Rescue Victoria.

A "significant" fire has broken out at one of Australia's two currently operational oil refineries, with residents in parts of Geelong told to stay indoors due to smoke.

A watch and act has since been issued for a number of suburbs in Geelong, with residents being warned to close windows to keep out hazardous smoke.

Oil and gas crisis from Iran war worse than 1973, 1979 and 2022 together, says IEA

Oil prices swing and stock markets tense on approach to Trump’s deadline for Iran to reopen strait of Hormuz

The oil and ‌gas crisis triggered by the blockade of the strait of Hormuz is “more serious than the ones in 1973, 1979 and 2022 together”, the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) has said.

Speaking as Donald Trump’s deadline for Iran to reopen the waterway approached, Fatih Birol told Le Figaro newspaper that the impact of the Middle East conflict on the oil market was larger than the combined force of the twin shocks of the 1970s and the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

War forces a harsh reckoning on energy

The Iran conflict has cemented the shift from concerns about sustainability to security of supply.

Despite the urging of the global renewables industry and the European Union, most of the world has consistently refused to pay a “green premium” for energy.

That pricing reality was clear well before the Iran war. But the conflict’s massive disruption to oil and gas markets has abruptly switched the global focus to the prospect of a “security premium” for what were commonly derided as fossil fuels in steady decline.

Live: Oil tumbles and stock market futures rally on Iran strike suspension

US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire, as the clock counted down and markets braced for his Iran deadline.

ASX and US stock market futures are higher on the news, while Brent crude is down more than 5 per cent.

Citing Iran state media, Reuters said Iran's Supreme Security Council has submitted a 10-point proposal to the United States via Pakistan.

If both sides agree, Iran says talks will begin on Friday, April 10.

Israel's Kan public broadcaster says it is also comitted to a ceasefire with Iran.

Oil prices choppy after expletive-laden Trump threat to Iran

Oil prices saw choppy trading on Monday after US President Donald Trump threatened to destroy critical infrastructure in Iran unless it allows ships to cross the Strait of Hormuz.

In remarks, Trump said the US would attack power plants and bridges unless the two sides reach a deal by late Tuesday US time, repeating a threat he made over the weekend on social media.

Brent crude rose above $110 (£83.38) a barrel after that post, then eased after a report of US-Iran talks over a potential ceasefire.

Oil and gas shipments from the Middle East have been severely disrupted as Tehran threatens to attack vessels that try to use the strait in retaliation for US and Israeli airstrikes since 28 February.

Kuwait desalination plant, oil refinery hit by missile and drone strikes

Meanwhile in UAE, 12 people were injured by debris fall and Oracle and Amazon Web Services data centres were hit.

An air strike has hit a power and desalination plant in Kuwait.

And 12 people have been injured in the United Arab Emirates as missiles were intercepted causing debris to fall, authorities in both countries said.

Gulf nations continue to face retaliatory strikes on the 35th day of the war by the United States and Israel on Iran.

Kuwaiti authorities blamed Iran for the strike before midday on Friday. The plant was not identified and the extent of the damage isn’t known.

US-Iran War LIVE: Indian worker killed in Kuwait; trade disruptions drive oil past $115

The war between US-Israel on side and Iran on the other has crossed the one-month mark, with the conflict showing no signs of resolution despite talk of negotiations.

Over the weekend, the Iran-backed Houthis of Yemen joined Tehran in its fight against Washington and Tel Aviv, sparking fears of further disruption to global trade amid the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Energy prices, meanwhile, continue to climb, with the Brent crude benchmark hitting $115 as of 0000 hrs GMT on Monday.

Since US President Donald Trump, last week, backed down from strikes against Iran's energy infrastructure citing good and productive talks, there's been little to indicate any progress towards a ceasefire.

Iran's strategic oil island thrust into the spotlight as Middle East conflict escalates

Iran's Kharg Island, a small but strategically vital strip of land nestled in the waters of the northern Persian Gulf, has been left untouched by U.S. and Israeli forces even as the Middle East conflict enters its second week.

The coral island, which is located about 15 miles off the coast of mainland Iran, serves as the centerpiece for Iran's oil industry.

It is estimated that around 90% of the country's crude exports pass through it before tankers then travel through the Strait of Hormuz. The island is also said to have a loading capacity of roughly 7 million barrels per day.

Stocks pare losses as oil falls back below $100; Dow is down 300 points: Live updates

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell to start the week as U.S. crude oil moved below $100 a barrel amid rising concerns about a stagflationary environment for the U.S. economy of rising inflation and slowing growth.

The 30-stock index fell 328 points, or 0.7%, and is coming off its biggest weekly slide in nearly a year. The S&P 500 lost 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.2%. That signifies a meaningful turnaround for the three indexes, as the Dow was down nearly 900 points, or 1.9%, at its low of the day, and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each lower by around 1.5%.

The broader market was helped off its lows by a rise in semiconductor stocks. Broadcom jumped more than 4%, while Micron Technology and Advanced Micro Devices gained almost 3% each. Nvidia climbed more than 1%.

JPMorgan Chase warns Iran war could trigger 10% stock market correction

Wall Street has spent the past week treating the Iran war like a nasty headline cycle: alarming and expensive — but maybe still survivable with enough denial and a functioning commodities desk. JPMorgan Chase, though, just gave that anxiety a number.

Bloomberg reported Monday that Andrew Tyler, the bank’s head of global market intelligence, has turned “tactically bearish” and warned that U.S. stocks aren’t prepared for a full correction as the war in Iran drags on and oil hits above $100 a barrel. To Tyler, that means the S&P 500 is at risk of falling about 10% from its peak to roughly 6,270, even as his position stayed predominantly neutral with no extreme de-risking.

Stocks Tank in Asia as Oil Price Surges

Stocks on Wall Street were modestly lower, while Asian and European markets tumbled.

River Akira Davis reported from Tokyo, Meaghan Tobin from Taipei, Taiwan, and Eshe Nelson from London.

Global markets came under renewed pressure at the start of the week, as surging oil prices stemming from the conflict in Iran weighed on stocks and bonds from New York to Tokyo.

The S&P 500 fell more than 1 percent at the open of trading on Monday, but recouped much of those losses by midday. Monday’s slide came after a drop of more than 2 percent last week, the biggest weekly decline for the benchmark index in about five months.
