Ajay Mitchell injury update: OKC Thunder guard limps off vs Spurs in 3Q

SAN ANTONIO — Ajay Mitchell left the Thunder bench midway through the third quarter of Game 3 of the Western Conference finals Friday against the Spurs after he was seen limping.

The Thunder guard went down late in Game 2 and limped off the court, but he started Game 3 in place of Jalen Williams, who reaggravated a left hamstring injury and was ruled out before the game Friday.

Mitchell exited the game with two points, five rebounds and one assist.

OKC Thunder Need Ajay Mitchell to Step Up in WCF Amid Injuries

Oklahoma City can’t seem to stay at full strength, and its rising star guard may need to step up again.

On Wednesday night, the Thunder responded to their Game 1 loss with a 122-113 win over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 to knot the series at 1-1. After starting the Western Conference Finals in heartbreaking fashion, the Thunder didn’t get through their two-game homestand without another loss.

While the scoreboard was enough to tie the series, the Thunder still suffered a potentially major blow with Jalen Williams exiting the game in the first half. Playing only seven minutes in the Thunder’s Game 2 win, Williams suffered another left hamstring injury.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Ajay Mitchell is never shaken by the moment

With 2025 All-Star Jalen Williams injured, the second-year guard has stepped up in the NBA playoffs

Most NBA fans outside of Oklahoma are probably just getting familiar with the name Ajay Mitchell. The second-year Oklahoma City Thunder guard has made a name for himself during these NBA playoffs while stepping into the starting lineup for injured 2025 NBA All-Star Jalen Williams.

As for Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his teammates, they were familiar with Mitchell from just after the 2024 draft, when the team traded with the Knicks to acquire him in the second round.

“It might be a shock to the world,” Gilgeous-Alexander recently told the media, “but it’s not to us. We knew who Ajay Mitchell was the day he stepped foot in our building, and he’s just showing it to the world.”

The defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder will open the post-break portion of the schedule without injured stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams.

Gilgeous-Alexander (abdominal strain) will be reevaluated in approximately one week and Williams (right hamstring strain) in approximately two weeks, the team announced Thursday.

Key reserve guard Ajay Mitchell, who sprained his left ankle over the All-Star break while rehabbing from an abdominal strain, will also be reevaluated in approximately one week.

Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning MVP, missed the past five games before the break after suffering his abdominal strain on Feb. 3. Oklahoma City has four games in the next week.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have a grueling stretch coming up. Isaiah Hartenstein (calf) out again Friday

After the win, Daigneault responded to Mitchell's perfect shooting performance and his role with the Thunder this season. “He's obviously a very talented player and a really impactful player, really efficient player,” Daigneault said. “It's hard to establish yourself and be on the gas on a team that's really good — a team that's pretty established that you're coming into. And he's found an unbelievable blend and has threaded a very nice needle of asserting himself, and really not flinching. “Not being afraid, and being on the gas, but also doing it in a way that's not inappropriate with what the rest of the team is doing. He's got a great diet on that. It's really impressive, and he competes on the other end. So, it makes it really easy to ride with him. He played a great game tonight,” Daigneault concluded.
