Olivia Rodrigo, Days After Releasing via Exclusive CD, Spreads ‘Serena Joy’ Around

Days after releasing a stellar new song exclusively via CD at one indie record shop, Olivia Rodrigo has officially dropped “Serena Joy” on all platforms.

With its layers of jubilant Devo-like synths, “Serena Joy” sounds sonically similar to the You Look Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love track “Expectations,” only the new gem is inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale, with lyrics like “If they do it to them/They’ll do it to you.” She co-wrote it with her longtime collaborator Dan Nigro, who also produced the track.

In a recent video interview with ETalk, Rodrigo said “Serena Joy” was initially recorded for Girl So in Love, but it was ultimately cut. “I actually really love that song,” she said. “It didn’t fit on the record. The record was very much a chronicle of a relationship — beginning, middle and end. And that song didn’t really fit in the story I was trying to tell. But I hope that it’ll be a part of something else down the line.”

Listen to Olivia Rodrigo’s New Song “Serena Joy”

On Friday, 500 lucky Olivia Rodrigo fans got to hear the pop star’s new song “Serena Joy” at Analog Music Shop in Tustin, California, where it was released as a limited-edition CD single. Now, those of us without close ties to Orange County can hear it, too. Do that below.

“Serena Joy” takes its title from a character in The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel about a future United States where women’s reproductive rights have been curtailed under a religious extremist government. Joy (played by Yvonne Strahovski in the Hulu adaptation starring Elizabeth Moss) is the wife of a high-ranking commander in the totalitarian patriarchy of Gilead. Over the course of the series, she experiences a crisis of faith and eventually aids Moss’ June in assassinating the members of Gilead’s leadership.

Olivia Dean at MSG: The 5 Best Moments From the Second of Her Four Sold-Out Shows

The English singer-songwriter proves she's at the peak of her powers.

“This album has completely changed my life” may sound like a familiar sentiment that any artist might share during a new album cycle, but for Olivia Dean and her second LP The Art of Loving, it’s practically an understatement.

Midway through her Saturday (Aug. 15) night show in New York City, the English singer-songwriter paused to reflect on a transformative period that saw her go from opening for Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet Tour, which rolled into Madison Square Garden in fall 2025, to selling out four nights as the headliner at the same venue just 10 months later. “That was my first time in an arena,” Dean shared of opening for Sab. “This is crazy. Now we’re doing our own four shows here.”

Olivia Dean Delivers Lessons in Love and One Hell of a Show at Madison Square Garden

There’s a word Olivia Dean consistently called to mind throughout her headlining performance at Madison Square Garden on Friday, Aug. 14 — present. The show was the first of four consecutive sold-out nights the British singer-songwriter has scheduled at the venue this weekend. She didn’t seem to be thinking too much about the other three, or really anything beyond that exact moment. Dean was astoundingly present.

It’s the most apt descriptor for the manner in which she commanded the room for nearly two full hours with a set spanning 24 songs. “I’m feeling emotional and grateful and so present with you this evening, New York,” Dean told the audience. It was early in the night and she just finished introducing the show with an opening run of “The Art of Loving,” “Nice to Each Other,” and “Lady Lady.” A brief encapsulation of how love lingers. A madly persuasive plea to live in the moment. A surrender to the inevitability of change. It was the exact order in which the songs appear on her acclaimed second album, The Art of Loving, which shares a title with the tour.

'This Creature': Olivia Wilde Slams Elon Musk Over 'Incel' Misogyny

Olivia Wilde has accused Elon Musk of embodying a strain of 'incel' misogyny and said she now 'deeply resents' the tech billionaire, recalling a meeting with him at SpaceX's Los Angeles headquarters years before his high-profile political turn.

In a fresh interview on The Louis Theroux Podcast, Wilde reflects on how men in positions of power shape culture and politics, and how that thinking threads through her recent work.

The actor and director has been promoting her new film The Invite while revisiting the controversies and debates around her 2022 psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling, which she says was partly fueled by concerns about misogynistic ideology bleeding into mainstream life and electoral politics.

Olivia Wilde slams 'creature' Elon Musk as she admits she 'deeply resents him'

Olivia Wilde did not hold back about her feelings on Elon Musk in a recent interview.

The actress and director, whose current movie, The Invite, is now in theaters, appeared on The Louis Theroux Podcast on Tuesday, July 21. The 42-year-old Hollywood star opened up about meeting the tech trillionaire over a decade ago, and how Elon Musk and other right-wing figures like Jordan Peterson inspired Chris Pine's villainous character in her 2022 thriller Don't Worry Darling.

Olivia's comments about the Tesla founder come after Tom Holland's two-word response as Elon Musk brutally labels him as a 'cuck'.

Olivia Wilde Recalls Meeting Elon Musk ‘Before He Turned Into This Creature’

“I really resent him now, I really deeply resent him,” the actress-director behind “The Invite” says

Olivia Wilde is remembering a meeting she had with Elon Musk “before he turned into this creature” and began stumping for MAGA and Donald Trump.

On Monday’s episode of “The Louis Theroux Podcast,” the “Invite” director-actress went into detail about a meeting she took with Musk after SpaceX set up their headquarters in Los Angeles.

She said she went to the meeting because “I wanted to see the rocket ships,” while Musk was supposedly curious about donating to a charity, with which Wilde worked, that supported Haiti by building schools and hospitals. She revealed that Musk did end up donating some money to the cause, but also noted that their interaction left Wilde “kind of confused by him.”

The Invite review – Seth Rogen adds zest and bite to fruity dinner party comedy

Olivia Wilde directs and stars alongside Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton in bizarrely moving tale, with Rogen’s levity keeping the outrageous plot points in check

Here is a four-way sex comedy of embarrassment, as if JB Priestley had written a play about swinging. But as well as embarrassing, it is intriguing, amusing and, finally, somehow bizarrely moving.

Middle class married life is satirised in the personae of two couples having an excruciating dinner party. A failed musician and his wife, played by Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde (who also directs), extend the invitation of the title to their stylish neighbours, a therapist and ex-firefighter played by Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton. Rogen is first among equals in this cast, the ironic insider-outsider perpetually undercutting the situation’s proliferating absurdities with knowing gags or yelps of incredulous outrage, and deploying that unmistakable yuk-yuk-yuk laugh.

The Invite review: Olivia Wilde's near-perfect foursome

Seth Rogen is better than ever in dinner-party drama The Invite

Couple-swapping dramas had their great heyday a long time ago, in the heat of the sexual revolution. The overblown Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor was released in 1966, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice in 1969 and Carnal Knowledge in 1971. They’re antiques now, curiosities from another era. Yet, somehow, sexual perplexities remain in 2026. The Catalan writer and director Cesc Gay adapted his own stage play about couples colliding into a snappy movie, The People Upstairs, in 2020. It’s since been remade in Italy in 2022, in Switzerland in 2023, in France in 2024 and in South Korea in 2025. And now here is the American edition: The Invite. The subject’s still a poser, it seems.

Olivia Rodrigo sings about heartbreak but she's already chosen her wedding song

We're supposed to be filming an interview in Hampstead Heath – one of her favourite places – but the heavens have burst. It's not just raining cats and dogs, but otters, dolphins and multiple other water-dwelling mammals.

As the monsoon monsoons, our lights and cameras are hastily scooped up and moved into the beautiful Victorian kitchen of nearby Kenwood House.

It's a scramble, but everything's in place (just) when Rodrigo arrives – not a hair out of place, after a short but windy walk from her car to the set.

Although it's an early start, the 23-year-old has already been working. On the journey over, she made final tweaks to a new song called Maggots For Brains, just 10 days before its release.

Album Review: you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love by Olivia Rodrigo

In a bar that closes at eleven, Olivia Rodrigo is praying the stranger across from her will never finish his beer. She’s stalked him online, convinced herself she has intuition, imagined the two of them pressed together in a bathroom line, and decided he looks like an angel frescoed on the walls of Versailles. Then comes the punchline, which is that this close together is the most alive she’s ever been, and will probably kill her too. It does not reach for the soft, grateful register that pop usually wants for songs about love. Rodrigo spent two albums (SOUR, GUTS) translating the body’s worst sensations into hooks and now uses the same machinery for happiness: “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love she’s turning that machinery to happiness.” Her crushes bring nausea, a pulse too fast and the suspicion that she invented the boy standing in front of her.

Olivia Rodrigo: ‘A breakup can be an opportunity to redirect your life’

This story is taken from the summer 2026 issue of Dazed, which is on sale internationally from June 5. Pre-order a copy of the magazine here.

Olivia Rodrigo is growing up. While she’s still the same young woman with big feelings and a penchant for babydoll dresses, the 23-year-old appears much more self-assured than the anxious adolescent of SOUR and GUTS when we meet to discuss her new album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. (Ironically, she seems happier too.) She’s speaking to me from her native Los Angeles, her cherubic face beaming as she tells me about her morning: mainly interviews and signing vinyls ahead of the much-anticipated release. The record is about her first “adult relationship” – likely her romance with English actor Louis Partridge, rumoured to have ended in late 2025. She tells me she finished making the record in March. “I’m still so close to it,” she says, adding that she’s ready to put it out into the world now. “I’m excited for it to not be ‘mine’ any more.”

Olivia Rodrigo just lived out the ultimate teenage fantasy: First you sing a song for Robert Smith about how miserable you are, then he gives you a hug. What a beautiful moment of cross-generational goth bonding. The Eighties gloom god was positively beaming with pride and joy, standing beside her to sing this great new tune he helped inspire. And who hasn’t dreamed of Robert singing your words back to you, assuring you that it’s gonna be okay? Here’s to Olivia for making that fantasy real. You seem pretty sad for a goth so in love.

Watch Olivia Rodrigo Debut a New Song With the Cure’s Robert Smith

Despite what Olivia Rodrigo said on her most recent single, sometimes, it actually will be the Cure. At a surprise set at Primavera Sound Barcelona last night, Rodrigo brought out Robert Smith to perform a new duet with the band’s frontman, “What’s Wrong With Me.” Watch them perform the song, which marks Rodrigo’s first original collaboration, below.

“This song is special to me for so many reasons, but primarily because it’s my first song I’ve ever done a feature on, which is really exciting,” Rodrigo told the crowd before performing “What’s Wrong With Me” for the first time. “I can’t believe that this song exists with the person it exists with, and I’m just so fucking over the moon.”

Olivia Rodrigo responds to babydoll dress criticism: ‘It shows how we normalize pedophilia in our culture’

The pop singer said that suggestions that a recent outfit was ‘childlike’ were rooted in sexist attitudes toward women

Olivia Rodrigo has responded to controversy over a recent babydoll dress she wore while performing on stage in Spain.

The singer faced backlash online after she wore a short puffy dress with a floral pattern while performing her recent single Drop Dead at Barcelona’s Teatre Grec on 8 May. She also wears a similar style dress on the cover of her upcoming album.

“That’s been making me so upset,” Rodrigo said in an interview with the New York Times’ Popcast.

Olivia Rodrigo Addresses Babydoll Dress Criticism: ‘It Shows How We Really Normalize Pedophilia in Our Culture’

Olivia Rodrigo has spoken about the online controversy surrounding her recent choice to wear a babydoll dress, stating that the logic behind the criticism showed how “we really normalize pedophilia in our culture” and that she was actually inspired by music icons like Kathleen Hanna and Courtney Love to wear them.

Rodrigo recently donned the dresses in her “Drop Dead” music video and at her recent Spotify’s Billions Club Live concert, eliciting online criticism that the look infantilized and sexualized her. “That’s been making me so upset,” she said in a clip from the New York Times Popcast, which will release the full episode tomorrow. “Not even for me. People can say whatever they want. What’s really disturbing is I have worn outfits that are maybe revealing on stage. I’ve been on stage in a sparkly bra and little shorts, which is my right, that’s fun, I felt cool and comfortable in that. And that wasn’t inappropriate, but me fully covered up in a dress that people deemed to be childlike was inappropriate.”

Olivia Rodrigo Weighs in on Dress Outrage: 'Shouldn't Be Responsible for Some Guy Sexualizing You'

As the online public continues to throw a temper tantrum over Olivia Rodrigo‘s choice to don a baby doll dress while promoting her third LP, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So In Love, the singer-songwriter weighed in on the controversy.

After wearing a pink flouncy dress for the album’s cover, a similar blue one for the “Drop Dead” music video, and rocking out at Barcelona’s Teatro Greco for Spotify’s Billions Club Live while wearing a floral babydoll dress with matching bloomers, the getups triggered a storm of criticism as many internet commenters lodged accusations that the 23-year-old pop sensation was sexualizing herself and and promoting “pedo core.”

Olivia Rodrigo Unravels in New “The Cure” Video

Olivia Rodrigo has dropped her new song “The Cure,” which longtime collaborator Dan Nigro produced. (No, not that The Cure—though Rodrigo and Robert Smith did sing “Just Like Heaven” together at her Glastonbury set last year.) The song is accompanied by a music video directed by Cat Solen and Jamie Gerin, which casts Rodrigo cast as a midcentury nurse saving hearts—well, attempting to—at a hospital where (spoiler) she ends up a patient herself. Watch it below.

You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love arrives June 12. Petra Collins directed the video for the album’s lead single, “Drop Dead,” which had Rodrigo literally dancing “on the walls of Versailles.” At the beginning of the month, Rodrigo pulled double duty as host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live, where she debuted a still-unreleased song, “Begged,” with an assist from Weyes Blood’s Natalie Mering. Her Unraveled Tour runs from September to May of next year, with support coming from Grace Ives, Wolf Alice, and more.
