MILAN — Hayley Scamurra is 31 years old. She is now a two-time Olympian and has won six world championship medals (three gold, three silver). And she's not afraid to say it: The 2026 U.S. women's Olympic hockey team is the best team she's ever played on.

As first-time Olympian Taylor Heise walked through the interview line, with a new gold medal around her neck, she too couldn't stop gushing about her team's talent.

USA roar back from brink to beat Canada in overtime and claim Olympic women’s ice hockey gold

Rescued from the brink of defeat by a deft touch from their captain in her final Olympics, the US beat Canada in Milan on Thursday to claim the women’s ice hockey gold medal.

Hilary Knight got engaged this week to the American speed skater, Brittany Bowe, and the 36-year-old now has another reason to celebrate. Out-fought and out-thought by their great rivals for much of this contest, the Americans were poised to lose to a team they had thumped 5-0 in the preliminary round only nine days earlier.

The 2026 US Olympic women's ice hockey team features 23 players, 13 forwards, seven defenders and three goaltenders, and boasts 21 returnees from the 2025 US women's national team that took home gold at the 2025 IIHF Women's World Championship in April. Eleven of the 23 have prior Olympic experience.

An Olympic legend unwittingly mentored her future rival. It was 12-year-old Indra Brown

At the time of the last Winter Olympics, 16-year-old Indra Brown had never even been in a halfpipe.

Despite skiing for nearly a decade, Brown had not yet tried the massive, U-shaped ramp largely because of a global lack of access; full-sized competitive halfpipes are rarely constructed because of the specialised infrastructure and perfect snow conditions they require.

Back home in Melbourne, true halfpipes are virtually non-existent, but that changed at age 12 when Brown's family relocated to Canada.

Australia teenager Ally Hickman feels brunt of horror fall in Winter Olympics snowboard final

16-year-old seventh in women’s slopestyle as Mari Fukada wins gold

Ally Hickman has suffered a bruised sternum after the Australian snowboarding teen took a nasty fall in the women’s slopestyle Olympic final, where she still finished an admirable seventh.

Aged just 16, the Sydney schoolgirl was in fourth spot after the first of three runs in the final at Livigno Snow Park on Wednesday, awarded a score of 67.70 for her performance navigating three rails and three jumps down the mountain course.

But the Olympic debutant fell during her second run, injuring her sternum, and was unable to improve on her score. While Hickman was cleared to compete in her third run, she had a further fall at the last jump which again jarred the injury.

Heavy snow has wreaked havoc on day 11 of the Winter Olympics, with several Australians having their events postponed for the day.

Sixteen-year-old Ally Hickman — the second-youngest member of the Australian team at the Milano Cortina Games — will contest the women's snowboard slopestyle final from 12:30am AEDT on Thursday.

Four Australians — Danielle Scott, Abbey Wilcox, Airleigh Frigo and Sidney Stephens — will now compete in the women's aerials qualification at 8pm on Wednesday AEDT.

Reilly Flanagan will make his Olympic debut in the men's aerials qualification 24 hours later.

Ally Hickman tells proud school friends ‘I’m not nervous, I’m just excited’ before Winter Olympics final

The 16-year-old Australian’s classmates and teachers are some of her biggest fans – and say she remains ‘really chill’

On the towering slopes of Livigno in Italy on Sunday, 16-year-old Australian Ally Hickman was a green and gold blur, securing herself a spot in the Olympic women’s snowboard slopestyle final.

She will compete for a medal in the finals on Tuesday – but thousands of kilometres away at her Sydney high school, the teenager is already a legend.

Around the school, Ally is everywhere: there are massive cardboard cutouts of her face and giant yellow letters spelling out her name.

The beloved Olympic mascots are color-changing critters that are vulnerable to climate change

The two animals chosen as the mascots of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are stoats, a weasel-like animal that’s at risk because of climate change. But Olympic organizers haven’t been talking about that, at least not so far. (AP video: Brittany Peterson)

For fans of the Milan Cortina Olympic mascots, the eponymous Milo and Tina, it’s been nearly impossible to find a plush toy of the stoat siblings in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Many of the official Olympics stores in the host cities are already sold out, less than a week into the Winter Games.

Which Other Olympic Mascots Could Italian Stoats Tina And Milo Slaughter In Cold Blood?

Apologies to all otters, ferrets, badgers, ferret-badgers, weasels, fishers, polecats, wolverines, martens, and grisons, but the mustelid of the moment is the stoat. The mascots of the 2026 Winter Olympics are a pair of sibling stoats named Milo (short for Milano) and Tina (short for Cortina). Tina is white, just like stoats in the winter, and Milo is brown, just like stoats in the summer. Milo, the Paralympic mascot, was born without a leg and learned to use his tail as a substitute. Per official Olympics lore, Milo and Tina parted ways as they grew up—Tina moved to the city and Milo stayed in the mountains—but the two reunite each year in the winter in their childhood den. Also per the lore, Milo and Tina are "the first openly Gen Z Mascots," implying the existence of closeted Gen Z mascots—may they one day feel secure enough in their generational identity to come out on the world stage.

Why are athletes getting stuffed animals at the Olympics? They actually play a big role

Upon medaling at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, some athletes have been given rather fuzzy keepsakes: stuffed animals.

That was the case when Team Italy clinched bronze in the figure skating team event.

As the team gathered for photos to celebrate their accomplishment, the eye-catching companions at their side quickly captured attention.

The stuffed animals represent Tina and Milo, a pair of stoat siblings who are the respective mascots of the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"Like young people, they have an active and proactive character, an ingenious and inventive attitude, a vital and resilient spirit," organizers said in a press release, in part. "Our stoats are two cheerful and easy-going teenagers, energetic, determined and strong-willed, sometimes charmingly irreverent towards adults and eager to assert their role as protagonists in the world to come."
