‘He’s only 18’: May defends teen teammate as Tigers star fires back at critics

Taylan May has come to the defence of young teammate Heamasi Makasini after the teenage sensation found himself in the crosshairs of critics over the past few days.

After a tremendous start to the season, which has seen him play in the centres or on the wing, Makasini had a forgettable performance last weekend against the Brisbane Broncos.

Although he had strong carries and numbers earlier in the match, he came up with four costly errors at the backend of the contest, which eventually saw their opponents win by one point via a field goal from Adam Reynolds.

NRL 2026: Raiders star ruled out as Benji Marshall explains real reason Tigers player was dropped

Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall has revealed that boom teenager Heamasi Makasini has a foot injury, but admitted he would have dropped him anyway for a freshen up. And Canberra coach Ricky Stuart has confirmed that Simi Sasagi won't play on Thursday night due to a hamstring injury.

The 18-year-old Makasni burst onto the scene in the pre-season when he scored a stunning solo try against the Panthers. He forced his way into the first-grade team to start the regular season, and despite being solid he hasn't really lived up to the immense hype.

For an 18-year-old he's been holding his own against some seasoned NRL veterans. But he had his worst game last weekend against Brisbane, making six handling errors.

Hong Kong celebrates 50 years of Rugby Sevens this weekend — and the tournament sure has come a long way. An event that began in 1976 at the old and often waterlogged Hong Kong Football Club, has become a global attraction attended by tens of thousands, at the state-of-the-art Kai Tak Stadium.

Melrose may have been the first, Dubai might now be the biggest, but Hong Kong remains the blue-riband event of Sevens.

Sam Kerr is the only Australian to win golden boot at the Asian Cup. A teammate in a new position could be next

If you had to guess which Matilda would most likely win the golden boot at the Women's Asian Cup before a ball had been kicked, Alanna Kennedy would unlikely be first to mind.

But the Australian veteran leads the race to do exactly that.

A move from being a defender to a holding midfielder has worked a treat for Kennedy, who has become the top goalscorer for the national team at the Women's Asian Cup.

Not only has she sent the most goals into the net for the Matildas, she also is equal with Japan's Riko Ueki on the leaderboard for the most goals scored in the tournament so far.

Stroke of genius or stroke of luck: What goal machine Kennedy reveals about Montemurro’s Matildas

A stroke of genius or a stroke of luck? SAMANTHA LEWIS unpacks what Alanna Kennedy’s Asian Cup moment says about Joe Montemurro’s midfield.

Alanna Kennedy was not even in frame when Sam Kerr bodied An Kuk Hyang off the ball and tore towards the box.

She wasn’t there when the Matildas captain cut the ball back towards Emily Van Egmond, stationed all alone near the D, nor when Chae Un Yong stuck out a hopeful toe to try and poke it away.

But then, suddenly, there she was: her long, loping limbs apparating just outside the paint, producing a neat, futsal-like roll of the ball under her right foot before sending it flat and fizzing into the back of the net with her left.

Alanna Kennedy is quick to point out she was a striker as a kid.

“I love it whenever we get the chance to shoot in training – I always want to be shooting,” she says. “I enjoy that part of football. I just see it as an opportunity to cause a bit of disruption. But also, if the ball falls at my feet, I’d like to back myself to finish that.”

A weekend for romance and movie lovers, plus the week’s best films in L.A.

Hello! I’m Mark Olsen. Welcome to another edition of your regular field guide to a world of Only Good Movies.

The week’s most anticipated new release, shrewdly hitting theaters just in time for Galentine’s/Valentine’s Day, is Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.

Fennell, of course, won a screenplay Oscar for her debut feature “Promising Young Woman” and created another controversial sensation with “Saltburn.” Robbie has produced all three of Fennell’s features via her production company LuckyChap Entertainment.

Robbie, Fennell and Elordi all spoke to Emily Zemler about the new film. Regarding the bold choices they make in their adaptation, Robbie said, “My hope is always: There’s got to be one person that watches this movie and thinks ‘That’s my favorite of all time.’ I want to make a movie that is someone’s favorite movie of all time and I’ll know how much that means to them. That it might save them in whatever ways movies can save you.”

Cognitive training could arm the brain against the effects of dementia

Cognitive “speed training” can reduce the risk of a dementia diagnosis by 25 per cent – that’s according to results from the world’s first randomised controlled trial of any intervention against the condition.

“There was a lot of scepticism about whether or not brain training interventions were beneficial, and to me, [our study] answers the question that they are,” says Marilyn Albert at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

Brain train game may help protect against dementia for up to 20 years

A large, long-term study found that playing a brain training video game may help protect the brain against dementia for decades. Experts say the findings are the strongest evidence yet that cognitive training can create lasting changes in the brain.

“It’s very surprising,” said Marilyn Albert, director of the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. “It’s not at all what I would have expected.”

The research, published Monday in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Translational Research & Clinical Interventions, was a long-term follow-up of the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) trial.

Specifically, participants who did up to 23 hours of a specific type of cognitive training called speed training over a three year period were found to have a dramatic 25% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia over a 20-year follow-up period.

Despite high-quality matches, Senegal’s meeting with hosts Morocco may pale with the World Cup looming

Sometimes a tournament’s greatest strength can be its greatest weakness. In part because of the excellent playing conditions, this has been an Africa Cup of Nations devoid of shocks. The better teams keep winning. There has been a lot of good football, but not a huge amount of memorable football.

And the consequence is that, in the final, we have the two best teams, or certainly the best team in north Africa against the best team in sub-Saharan Africa: the hosts and World Cup semi-finalists Morocco against Senegal, who have reached three of the past four Afcon finals.

One month of compelling African football reaches its climax in Rabat on Sunday, as Africa Cup of Nations hosts Morocco face off with Senegal to determine the winners of the 35th edition of the AFCON.

The final – which is as many people had predicted – brings together the two highest placed teams in the FIFA World Rankings, where Morocco are 11th and Senegal are 19th, and will see a collision between arguably the two biggest success stories in the continent's game over the last ten years.

Since 2000, only 3 tornado warnings have been issued in Hawaii

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – It was a wet start to the Aloha Friday with severe weather for parts of Kauai and Oahu.

There was even a rare tornado warning issued for Ni’ihau around 6:40 a.m.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Honolulu noticed alarming activity on the radar, including intense circulation. They say the factors were all there for a tornado to spawn.

“Several of us here on the floor just got together and decided that this warranted a tornado warning and we’ll never know what happened. It came across a part of the island that’s very low habitation, but we’re pretty confident it probably had a tornado, especially right when it came on shore,” Meteorologist Stephen Parker said.

A rare tornado warning was issued early Friday morning for the island of Niʻihau as a strong storm system moved across the western end of the Hawaiian Islands, prompting officials to urge residents to seek shelter and remain alert.

The warning was precautionary. It ran through 7 a.m., and no reports came in of confirmed tornado damage on the sparsely populated island near Kauaʻi.

Only one thing matters in centurion Root's pursuit

He may have scored his first century on Australian shores, but there are bigger fish to fry for England's champion

Selfless Joe Root is so hell-bent on winning the Ashes that he was quick to put his first Test century in Australia back in its box when asked for his reflections.

This tour could well be the final time the 34-year-old gets the chance to win the Ashes for the first time in his career Down Under. His breakthrough unbeaten 138 at the Gabba was a means to an end and not an end in itself.

Root's deepest views on that magnificent knock will have to wait. All the well wishes from his many supporters, though much appreciated by England's No.4, must also be put in perspective.

Australia have scrapped their way to a first innings lead in the second Ashes Test, capitalising on England’s sloppiest day of the series after five dropped catches, muddled tactics and wayward bowling soured their bright start at the Gabba.

At the close of an enthralling day’s play in the pink-ball clash – which is proving far closer to a traditional Test match than the two-day mayhem in Perth – Australia reached 6-378, boasting a lead of 44 runs, to tighten their grip on a series that looks to be steadily drifting their way.
