Origin Energy says it is investigating a security breach that "may have" affected customer data.

 The company says it has notified the Australian Cyber Security Centre and Australian Federal Police. 

The security breach is the latest for major companies in Australia, with Partnered Health targeted in a cyber attack last week.

"Origin Energy Limited (Origin) is currently investigating a potential security incident which may involve unauthorised access to some customers' data," it said in a statement.

Origin Energy is investigating a potential cyber hack that may have compromised the data of some customers.

In a statement, the major energy provider said that its does not believe the data involved includes sensitive data such as customer credit cards or bank details.

“[The company] is currently investigating a potential security incident which may involve unauthorised access to some customers’ data,” Origin said in its statement to the ASX on Wednesday afternoon.

“We do not believe the impacted data includes customer credit card or bank details.

“We understand an incident like this may raise concerns and acknowledge the impact of this uncertainty on Origin customers.

Nation’s largest power company probes potential data leak

Power and gas giant Origin Energy has launched an urgent investigation into a potential security breach that may have accessed the personal details of some of its 4.7 million Australian customers.

Origin, the nation’s largest energy retailer, said on Wednesday it was investigating the potential hacking incident and acknowledged it might raise concerns for customers.

The company said it did not believe customers’ credit card or bank details had been accessed.

“Our investigations into this incident are occurring as a matter of urgency, and Origin will provide further updates as appropriate,” a spokesperson said.

The alleged hacker has claimed to have access to the personal details of 2 million Origin Energy customers, including their names, addresses, contact numbers and dates of birth. However, these claims have not been able to be verified.
