    Ebola outbreak on track to be deadliest ever, WHO chief says

    The current outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo is on track to surpass the deadliest outbreak of the disease ever, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

    Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters that the 2026 outbreak, "at its current pace", would "eclipse" that of the 2014-2016 occurrence, which killed at least 11,000 people.

    The outbreak this year, declared on 15 May, has seen at least 4,300 cases and caused more than 2,000 deaths.

    The WHO said on Wednesday it hoped to reverse the spread of the disease within three months but warned that this meant bringing transmission under control – not ending the outbreak entirely.

    Outbreak to eclipse West Africa’s Ebola outbreak of 2014 to 2016 if it continues at current pace, WHO chief says.

    The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) is spreading faster than health authorities can contain it and is on track to become the deadliest on record, according to the World Health Organization.

    WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that at its current pace, the outbreak is on track to eclipse the West African Ebola outbreak of 2014 to 2016, a crisis that killed more than 11,000 people and accelerated the push to develop a vaccine.

    The outbreak in eastern DR Congo has killed more than 2,000 people out of more than 4,300 recorded cases, making it the fastest-moving Ebola outbreak on record. It was formally declared on May 15, though genetic sequencing later revealed the virus had actually begun circulating in February.

    Ebola toll passes 2000, cases rise to 4449 in DR Congo

    At least 2000 people have died in ⁠Democratic Republic ​of Congo's Ebola outbreak, the fastest-growing on record, according to the latest data.

    Government data published overnight showed the outbreak has 4449 confirmed cases, including 2061 deaths.

    Starting from the first confirmed case, the death toll was reached almost three times faster than in the 2014-16 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the worst on record.

    'Explosive diarrhoea' outbreak remains a mystery as officials struggle to find sources

    Tracking the origin of an outbreak in the US that causes explosive diarrhoea has proved a challenge for public health experts searching for answers about how it started – and how it's spreading.

    Cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that spreads through contaminated water or food, often during the summer, has now reached 34 states and infected nearly 7,000 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The main symptom of the rarely fatal illness is frequent, watery diarrhoea.

    Some experts told the BBC that the parasite is notoriously difficult to trace, a task possibly complicated in part by cuts to federal health agencies.

    Cyclosporiasis Outbreak with Unknown Source

    CDC, along with state and federal partners, are working together to investigate several outbreaks of cyclosporiasis. Investigations to identify and confirm the sources of the outbreaks are ongoing.

    There is a large multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis occurring in at least four midwestern states. Public health officials are interviewing people linked to this outbreak to find out what foods they ate before getting sick. A specific food item has not yet been confirmed as the source. Investigators are collecting as much information as they can to solve this outbreak.

    Cyclospora outbreaks causing diarrhea in US expected to continue through August

    Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it is scouring food supply chain for culprit, which may be lettuce

    Federal health officials have said they expect the outbreaks of cyclospora – a parasite that causes watery, explosive diarrhea – across the US to continue through August as they scour the food supply chain for the culprit.

    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified 1,645 lab-confirmed cases of the parasite; reported that 145 people have been hospitalized; and reported that they have a backlog of 5,100 cases that require more analysis, including interviews.

    “The true number of infections is almost certainly higher, because many people with mild illness recover,” said Gwen Biggerstaff, deputy director of the CDC’s division of foodborne, waterborne, and environmental diseases, said at a media briefing on Tuesday. “We’re seeing an unusually high number of cyclosporiasis cases this summer.”

    DRC Ebola outbreak grows to become one of worst recorded

    The Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reached 1,048 confirmed cases and 267 deaths. 

    At least 19 of those who have died are children, according to aid organisations on the ground. 

    The outbreak is now the third worst on record and the second worst ever recorded in the DRC.

    Tonga declares dengue outbreak, 24 cases confirmed

    Tonga's Ministry of Health says there are 24 confirmed dengue fever cases in the country.

    As of Monday, two people were in hospital with dengue after a dengue fever outbreak was declared on Friday.

    Those between the ages of 11 and 15 were most affected, the ministry said.

    The Health Ministry said rain and adverse conditions favoured breeding sites for mosquitoes, which carry the disease.

    The declaration of an outbreak comes seven months after Tonga declared its previous dengue outbreak over.

    In the previous one, declared on 19 February last year, 907 cases were recorded and three people died.

    The Ministry of Health is urging people to stay calm and follow Ministry advice.

    Dengue cases confirmed in Tonga

    The Tonga Ministry of Health confirmed three dengue fever cases in Tongatapu.

    All cases were locally acquired, with no epidemiological links identified, and all patients are currently stable, including one discharged and two managed under home care.

    In the context of the ongoing wet season, the risk of further transmission remains high due to favorable mosquito breeding conditions.

    Public health authorities have strengthened case investigation, vector control, active surveillance, and community engagement, and the public is encouraged to eliminate standing water and seek early care if symptoms develop.

    Tributes paid to ‘lovely’ sixth-form pupil who died in Kent meningitis outbreak

    Tributes have been paid to a sixth-former confirmed as the second person to have died after an outbreak of meningitis in Kent.

    The sixth-form student was named as Juliette by teachers at Queen Elizabeth’s grammar school (QEGS) in Faversham, who described her as a kind and intelligent young woman.

    “It is with great sadness that we are confirming the loss of Juliette, a much-loved and treasured member of our school community. Juliette was a student at our school for seven years. She was incredibly kind, thoughtful and intelligent and she loved our school and was very happy here,” said the headteacher, Amelia McIlroy.
