Englandâs triumph over Mexico in the World Cup attracted a peak live audience of 9.1 million on BBC One and BBC iPlayer despite kicking off at 2am BST â the biggest television audience ever for a live UK broadcast at that hour.

The dramatic 3-2 win drove the biggest day ever recorded for BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and app and for BBC Sportâs social video views, the broadcaster said.

The round-of-16 victory, in which Jude Bellingham scored twice and Harry Kane fired home a penalty, also delivered record-breaking audiences across BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with supporters staying up into the early hours or catching up on the drama later that morning.

Kane interview stuns viewers as England celebrations take toll

Harry Kane was lost for words after England survived an almighty scare in one of the most chaotic FIFA World Cup matches in history, capping off a dramatic day of action that also saw Brazil sent packing by Norway in a major Round of 16 upset.

After lengthy weather delays, the game was blown wide-open late in the first half when Jude Bellingham scored two goals in as many minutes, before Julian Quinones hit back for the host nation before the break.

Man charged over alleged people smuggling operation in Far North Queensland

A Taiwanese national has been charged over an alleged people smuggling operation in Far North Queensland.

The group allegedly came ashore from a boat at Pennefather Beach, a popular camping spot about 50 kilometres north of Weipa, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

In a statement, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said the 34-year-old man was arrested in a Weipa supermarket car park later in the day.

The 34-year-old has been charged with one count of aggravated offence of people smuggling (involving at least five persons), which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment.

The man appeared in Cairns Magistrates Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody. He is expected to appear in court again on Thursday.

The consumer regulator has sued Grillâd over allegations the burger chain engaged in greenwashing by dramatically overstating how much money it was donating towards one of its key environmental campaigns.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) on Tuesday announced it had launched federal court action against Grillâd, alleging it misrepresented its Tree Day Tuesday campaign for more than three years.

The ACCC alleges that between January 2021 and April 2024, Grillâd represented to customers it would donate $1 from every burger purchased on a Tuesday towards the planting of trees.

Grill’d sued for allegedly duping customers over ‘Tree Day Tuesday’ donations

Grill’d is facing a lawsuit from the consumer watchdog which claims it misled millions of Australians by promising to donate $1 to the environment per burger sold on Tuesdays when only 4 per cent of purchases qualified under its complex terms.

The terms and conditions of the three-year “Tree Day Tuesday” campaign – which required that the orders be placed by Grill’d loyalty members, for in-store dining, at the front counter, with a separate barcode scanned – were so restrictive that only a fraction of the 5 million burgers sold qualified.

“We allege Grill’d misled customers by overstating the extent of the donations it would make and the environmental contributions from its Tree Day Tuesday promotion. We consider this to be a form of greenwashing,” said Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb.

Should I sell my investment property now, or after July next year?

I have owned an investment property since 1997 and, with the proposed removal of the 50 per cent capital gains tax (CGT) discount, I am confused about the rules that may apply after July 2027. I originally owned two apartments, but sold one in 2015, using the proceeds to pay out the mortgages on both properties. The remaining apartment is no longer negatively geared, so the rental income, combined with my pensions, places me in a higher tax bracket. I understand that I will have to pay CGT whether the 50 per cent discount remains available. What confuses me is the proposed new system that allows increases in the Consumer Price Index to be considered when calculating the taxable gain. The treasurer said the system from July 2027 will be based on the pre-1999 rules, which I know little about.

“They are sourced from manufacturers or online suppliers of questionable quality,” dermatologist Dr Leona Yip told 9News.

Asking prices drop as cooling market turns in buyers’ favour

Initial asking prices are falling, homes are being relisted at lower prices and buyers are winning bigger discounts on real estate as the housing market cools rapidly following the federal budget and higher interest rates.
