For almost two years, Mayank Yadav’s story with the Indian team has been written more by fitness bulletins than by figures on a scorecard. His recall for the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe matters for a simple reason: India gets back one of its fastest bowlers, and Mayank gets a chance to start rebuilding a career that injury has interrupted again and again.

Few fast bowlers anywhere possess his natural gift for pace. When he burst onto the IPL scene in 2024, speeds above 150 kmph became routine, the ball skidding through with a steep bounce that batters struggled to read. It was enough to fast-track him into the Indian setup and earn him a special fast bowler’s contract with the BCCI. At that point, it seemed India had found a rare talent.

Brett Lee’s first ball to a Test cricketer swung wide – at a fair clip, of course – and would’ve finished at gully if not for the SCG netting.

Some six years before the most storied of Boxing Day Test debuts, when he razed India with 5-47 and a wicket in his first over in 1999, Lee first rose to prominence in Australian cricket circles – once he landed a ball on the pitch.
