Why JD Vance joined Pakistan’s last-ditch US-Iran mediation efforts

Backchannel talks gain pace as Pakistan mediates and Iran seeks indirect engagement through US Vice President JD Vance.

Islamabad, Pakistan – Standing before reporters at the White House, US President Donald Trump was asked whether a ceasefire with Iran was within reach.

“We have an active, willing participant on the other side,” he said on Monday, adding that the proposal on the table was “a significant step” before quickly qualifying that “it’s not good enough.”

Pressed on who was leading Washington’s diplomatic push, Trump confirmed what had been unfolding through backchannels for days.

“They’re doing it along with Marco, JD. We have a number of people doing it,” he said, listing Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio among the administration’s lead negotiators for the first time.

Ex-Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa is Alive; Viral Death Rumors debunked

ISLAMABAD – Several social media posts claiming that former Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has passed away, and these reports turned to be another propaganda.

Fact-checkers identified that an Indo-Afghan X account operating from Kabul has been spreading this misinformation, falsely reporting his death.

Sources said Bajwa, 65, is alive and in good health. The confusion appears to stem from a real incident in February 2026, when he suffered a fall in his bathroom at his Rawalpindi residence. He slipped in wee hours, sustaining head injuries that required hospitalization.

Bajwa was admitted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), initially in the ICU, and underwent treatment for his injuries. Some reports mentioned hairline skull fractures or fainting caused by a heart block-related issue, but his condition was stable.

Pakistan declares 'open war' against Afghanistan as Kabul hit by air strikes

Pakistan has bombed major cities in Afghanistan, including the capital Kabul.

The Pakistani defence minister declared the neighbours were at "open war" following months of clashes.

Islamabad says Pakistani Taliban leaders operate from Afghan territory and use it as a safe haven to plan attacks inside Pakistan, a charge the Afghan Taliban denies.

Pakistan has carried out air strikes in Kabul and two other Afghan provinces, according to a spokesperson for Afghanistan's government.

The strikes came early on Friday, local time, hours after Afghanistan launched a cross-border attack on Pakistan, in the latest escalation of violence between the neighbouring countries that has made a Qatar-mediated ceasefire appear increasingly shaky.

Escalation of violence between the volatile neighbours makes a Qatar-mediated ceasefire appear increasingly shaky

Pakistan bombed Afghanistan’s capital of Kabul and two other provinces on Friday, hours after a cross-border attack, the latest escalation of violence between the volatile neighbours who signed a Qatar-mediated ceasefire in 2025.

Following months of tit-for-tat clashes, Afghan forces attacked Pakistani border troops on Thursday night in what the Taliban government said was retaliation for earlier deadly air strikes.

Hours later, at least three explosions were heard in Kabul on Friday morning, but there was no immediate information on the exact location of the strikes in the Afghan capital, or of any potential casualties.

Afghanistan launches attacks against Pakistan, draws ‘immediate response’

Afghanistan says ‘large-scale offensive operations’ launched; Pakistan reports inflicting ‘heavy casualties’ in border clashes.

Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities say they have launched attacks against Pakistan’s military positions along their border in response to Pakistani air strikes last week, as Pakistan said its forces had retaliated.

The media office of Afghanistan’s military corps in the east said in a statement that “heavy clashes” began late on Thursday “in response to the recent air strikes carried out by Pakistani forces in Nangarhar and Paktia” provinces.

“In response ‌to repeated provocations and violations by Pakistani military circles, large-scale offensive operations have been launched against Pakistani military positions and installations along the Durand Line,” Taliban government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid wrote in a post on X.

Pakistan batter reprimanded for ICC Code of Conduct breach

Pakistan batter Sidra Amin has been officially reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct in the first ODI against South Africa on Sunday in Bloemfontein.

Sidra was found to have breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”

One demerit point has been added to Sidra Amin’s disciplinary record in accordance with the regulations. This marks her second offence within a 24-month period, taking her total tally of demerit points to two.

ICC Sanctions Pakistan Batter After T20 World Cup 2026 Defeat to England

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed sanctions on a Pakistan batter following the team’s recent loss to England in the T20 World Cup 2026. This decision highlights the ICC’s dedication to enforcing discipline in cricket.

The batter received a demerit point due to a breach of conduct, marking her second offence within a span of 24 months. This incident increased her total to two demerit points, reflecting a growing concern for discipline.

Demerit points play a significant role in the ICC’s disciplinary framework. They serve as official warnings and may lead to stricter penalties for repeat offenders. As players accumulate points, the consequences become more severe.

ICC cracks down on Pakistan star with big punishment amid T20 World Cup 2026

New troubles are knocking at the door for Pakistan, as amid the T20 World Cup qualification scenario not going their way, one of the key batters has been subjected to punishment for breaching the ICC code of conduct.

The Pakistan Cricket Board is anyway going through a rough patch, after their Men's team made an awful start to their Super-8 campaign in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup. They qualified for the Super-8 stage after having defeated the Netherlands, USA and Namibia, but have not won against any of the major forces.

Pakistan's group-stage defeat came against rivals India. They had lost the game by a humiliating margin of 61 runs, and then, coming into the Super-8, they lost the match to England in their second game. The first game against New Zealand was abandoned without a single ball being bowled.

Pakistan have recalled Shaheen Shah Afridi for their Super Eight fixture against England in Pallekle at the expense of Faheem Ashraf, and will bat first after Salman Agha won the toss on a fresh pitch.

Afridi's nine overs at the T20 World Cup have cost 101 runs and he has been left out for consecutive matches after Pakistan's heavy defeat to India in Colombo, including their no-result against New Zealand to start the Super Eight stage. But he has been recalled to face England, perhaps due to their top order's perceived vulnerability against left-arm seam.

The pull goes to the fence for four and that completes a fine performance from England, their best of the tournament so far.

Salman Agha says his team could’ve done better but sometimes, you just have to accept that your opponent played well, and Harry Brook took the game away, too good for them today.

Otherwise, he’s happy with how Afridi bowled, doing exactly what they wanted from him, and he hopes England can now do New Zealand for them.

With a boycott looming, the Twenty20 World Cup may be the first major International Cricket Council tournament (ICC) in 14 years to miss a head-to-head contest between traditional rivals India and Pakistan.

The T20 event opens on Saturday with Pakistan against the Netherlands, and with India finishing off the day one program against the United States.

It's the scheduled February 15 encounter in Colombo between Pakistan and India that has plunged the 20-team tournament into crisis.

A prayer for cricket to rise above the politics

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

The men's T20 World Cup is cricket's biggest party. It is the pinnacle event that showcases the broadest array of teams – from Europe, the Antipodes, the Middle East, Africa, the Americas. The guest list had been finalised. The caterers were locked in. The band was booked.

But oh. In the neighbourhood hosting the party, dysfunction is spilling over. Pakistan had refused to play in India, in return for India having refused to play in Pakistan last year. Bangladesh have since exited the tournament for different reasons. Now, most recently, Pakistan have announced they will not play their group match against India even in Colombo. These are tornadoes that have been whipped up in the political world and then sent in cricket's direction. What this means for the tournament is that as the guests are arriving, there is obvious discomfort. To cut this tension, you'd need a chainsaw.
