    I spent 10 minutes in complete silence in my patient's room today, my eyes scanning lines of text in the electronic medical record. I wasn't looking for a life-threatening lab value or an undiscovered malignancy. I was hunting for an old diagnostic code for obstructive sleep apnea. When I finally found the assessment section of a sleep study from 2019, I celebrated. She had mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

    My patient has class 3 obesity, prediabetes, hypertension, and mild (thankfully) OSA. With the recent trial launch of the federal Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, American medicine has officially stepped into a contentious, bureaucratic "upside down" where being relatively healthier makes it easier to get treated, and being sicker can mean you're left behind. A subtle change from mild to moderate OSA would completely ruin her chances at receiving an affordable GLP-1 through the bridge program.

    HEALTH FIRST: New Medicare program offers low-cost GLP-1 weight loss drugs

    WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A new Medicare program is making select GLP-1 weight loss drugs more affordable for eligible patients, with costs as low as $50 a month.

    Dr. Kara Bird with Novant Health was in the studio to discuss the Medicare GLP Bridge Program and who qualifies.

    According to Dr. Bird, the program is available to Medicare Part D recipients who meet specific medical criteria, including:

    “Call your doctor. Ask if you qualify,” Dr. Bird said. “If you know you have Medicare Part D, see if you have those other qualifying factors.”

    Thousand of patients who attended a dental practice in Sydney's inner west have been advised to test for bloodborne viruses.

    Retired dentist William Tam was found to have poor infection control practices, potentially exposing people to HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

    NSW Health said patients were at low risk but should be tested as a precaution. 

    Patients treated by a retired dentist who practised in Sydney's inner west for 25 years have been advised to get tested for bloodborne viruses.

    Authorities in Australia have issued a warning to patients of a retired dentist, urging them to test themselves for bloodborne viruses due to "poor infection control practices" at the clinic.

    Thousands of patients at Dr William Tam's clinic in Strathfield, western Sydney may have been exposed to hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV, the New South Wales state health ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

    The Ministry urged patients to see a doctor and test for such viruses, thought it noted that the "risk is low".

    Tam is now retired and de-registered as a dentist, the statement said.

    "The poor infection control practices at Dr Tam's practice means all former patients may be at low risk of a blood borne virus infection, which can have serious and long-lasting health impacts," Dr Leena Gupta, the public health clinical director of the Sydney Local Health District, said in the ministry statement.

    Thousands of patients of Sydney dentist urged to get tested for blood-borne viruses

    Up to 5000 patients of a Sydney dentist may have been exposed to blood-borne viruses, but a lack of patient records means health authorities are struggling to identify and alert them.

    NSW Health is urging all patients treated by Dr William Tam, who practised at Suite B, 2 Albert Road, Strathfield, to see their GP or healthcare provider to undergo testing for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV as a precaution.

    Health authorities conducted an inspection of Tam’s clinic on April 24, following a complaint to the Dental Council of NSW. They found poor infection-control practices, including inadequate sterilisation of equipment and cleaning.
