    Meta has settled a landmark court battle over teen social media addiction by agreeing to pay $23.6 billion and adding further child-safety measures to its Facebook and Instagram apps.

    The agreement came ahead of Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg being expected to take the stand before a jury in federal court.

    Meta is urging competitors like TikTok and YouTube to adopt similar measures.

    Meta has agreed to pay $US17 billion ($23.6 billion) and add child-safety measures to its Facebook and Instagram platforms to end a landmark trial over teen social media addiction and settle claims filed by 47 US states, state attorneys-general have announced.

    The settlements announced on Wednesday end a federal trial over allegations Meta's products harmed children, and the company misled the public about their safety. Four of the states — California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey — were expected to seek close to US$200 billion ($279 billion) in civil penalties.

    The US Department of Justice has announced a $559 million settlement with the video-sharing platform TikTok over concerns it violated children's online privacy.

    The government argued the platform improperly collected and kept minor users' data without parental permission.

    The settlement comes as TikTok, alongside other social media platforms, faces increasing scrutiny around the world. 

    TikTok and parent company ByteDance have agreed to pay US$400 million ($559 million) to settle a lawsuit with the US Department of Justice over claims that the video-sharing platform violated federal children's privacy laws.

    Todd Blanche vows to 'come after' bad actors following $400M TikTok settlement

    Attorney General Todd Blanche praised the Justice Department's $400 million settlement with TikTok over allegations of children's privacy violations, saying the deal is a "fair, just and right result."

    Speaking on "Saturday in America," Blanche said the deal addresses TikTok's past actions while helping protect children online.

    "If companies and entities are not doing what they're supposed to do to make sure that happens, we're [going to] come after them," Blanche told host Kayleigh McEnany.

    The support provided by the CFMEU’s now former boss on the Big Build, Joe Myles, to criminal Wayne “Junior” Carter has emerged as a case study of how criminals infiltrated Labor’s signature infrastructure scheme.

    Labour Hire Commissioner Steve Dargavel’s extraordinary comments came as two respected former top anti-corruption officials issued a damning joint assessment of Premier Jacinta Allan’s failure to clean up the infrastructure scheme she presided over for years as minister.

    Former ombudsman Deborah Glass and ex-senior judge and former chief of the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission Robert Redlich said an urgent royal commission was the only remedy that would adequately confront corruption on the government’s signature $109 billion Big Build infrastructure program.

    Funding for the two-year deal to give early educators a 15 per cent pay rise, announced ahead of the 2025 election, was to expire in December. Sixty-thousand workers were facing pay cuts of 5 to 6 per cent, according to the United Workers Union, which was threatening to strike next month if the subsidy wasn’t extended.

    A cap on how much providers could hike fees was also due to end in August, leading to calls from advocates for a new deal to prevent further price rises for families.

    The new funding, which will take to $7.2 billion the gross amount spent on childcare wage subsidies in less than four years, will be unveiled by the Albanese government on Wednesday, along with a signature announcement on Medicare, at the same time the ascendant Pauline Hanson makes her first keynote address to the National Press Club.

    The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) announced on Friday that it will pay bonuses to fighters in a form of cryptocurrency issued by Trump family business World Liberty Financial at the heavily publicized White House mixed martial arts event on Sunday.

    The development connects the Trump family’s financial interests to the high-profile UFC competition being promoted on government property. The competition on the south White House lawn is scheduled for 14 June, Donald Trump’s birthday.

    The UFC said some fighters will receive bonuses in World Liberty Financial crypto called “stablecoins”, whose value is pegged to the US dollar. World Liberty named the currency “USD1”.
