    Sir Keir Starmer marked St George’s Day by championing "service, generosity and respect" as quintessential English values that the nation should embrace.

    The Prime Minister also cautioned against "voices both here and abroad" attempting to sow division within the country, as he hosted a reception at Downing Street for members of the public and celebrities to honour England’s patron saint.

    Sir Keir Starmer hosted a St George's Day celebration at Downing Street on Monday evening, where he championed "service, generosity, and respect" as quintessentially English values.

    The reception brought together members of the public, alongside well-known faces, to mark England's patron saint's day – officially celebrated on Thursday.

    Sir Keir singled out three individuals present at the No10 gathering who he believed exemplified true English characteristics.

    Among them was Isaac Davidson, a York-based window cleaner who assisted in removing racist graffiti from a Chinese restaurant in the city last year.

    Keir Starmer has blasted "plastic patriots" who hijack the St George's flag to spread hate.

    Ahead of a visit to mark St George's Day, the Prime Minister instead said the flag belongs to the vast majority who want "unity over hate" and "decency over division".

    It comes as he hails the government flagship £6billion Pride in Place programme as the antidote to the poison of populism. It is supporting hundreds of areas to improve high streets, parks and decaying community places.

    A weekly Lotto ritual has paid off in spectacular fashion for a group of Mirrabooka workmates who have shared a $1.2 million windfall.

    The group’s Saturday Slikpik 30 ticket, bought at Mirrabooka Millions, scopped the loot after more than three years of playing together.

    One member discovered the life-changing win while checking the numbers and quickly raised the alarm.

    “I couldn’t believe it,” they said. “I kept thinking, ‘Am I reading this properly?’

    “I called my colleague and told them they needed to check our ticket as soon as possible!”

    At first, the group believed they had scored a far smaller prize.

    The press notes for Netflix‘s new action drama Last Samurai Standing are careful to mention that the series “has been in development since 2022, a vision that predates even the development of Squid Game.” I assume that’s a typo, since Squid Game premiered on Netflix in 2021. But the exact phrasing and even the actual truth are close to irrelevant.

    Whether Last Samurai Standing was put into development before Squid Game became a global sensation and FX’s Shōgun emerged as an awards juggernaut truly doesn’t matter — because every critic and every viewer is going to call the series Squid Game meets Shōgun, a comparison that isn’t an accusation of theft so much as a very, very accurate description of narrative similarity. Under what circumstances is being Squid Game meets Shōgun anything other than a boon?
