‘It’s fired people up’: support grows, including within Labor, for new gas tax to curb wartime profits

Government, industry and opposition see growing public support for a new gas tax but the industry is fighting back

The gas industry is mobilising in opposition to a potential new tax on the sector as political momentum builds – including among Labor MPs – for the government to use the May budget to prevent producers profiting from the Middle East war.

The Australian Energy Producers (AEP) chief executive, Samantha McCulloch, claimed a new tax would punish the same Asian trading partners Australia was leaning on to supply more fuel amid the global energy crisis.

Anthony Albanese's department has requested Treasury modelling on options to impose a new levy on gas companies, as well as further changes to the Petroleum Resources Rent Tax.

The document, seen by the ABC, suggests the government is seeking advice on whether to impose the tax in the May budget to collect some of the windfall profits gas companies are making during the Middle East war.

More than 500 million litres of petrol and diesel have been released from federal fuel reserves and directed to regional communities.

"People were just not ready for" Starfield, says game's composer as he talks "visionary" Todd Howard

"Starfield will eventually become… legendary… It's just a matter of time."

Starfield composer and long-time Bethesda collaborator Inon Zur has been discussing his decades-spanning work with the studio, sharing his thoughts on "visionary" Bethesda boss Todd Howard, as well as his belief that "people were just not ready for" 2023's divisive space adventure.

Zur's composition credits span an impressive number of game series, including Dragon Age, Crysis, Prince of Persia, and Starcraft. And he's been a regular presence across Bethesda's work too, composing for numerous Fallout games, as well as the likes of Starfield. Zur, speaking with RPGsite.net, recently discussed his relationship with the studio – how, while the team still provides direction for each project, they also "trust me to apply my judgment because they know me so well" – as well as working with Bethesda's Todd Howard.

Starfield is a game people were "just not ready" for and it'll still come good at some point, reckons Fallout 4 composer

"[Todd Howard] believes in his way, and it just has proven time and time again that eventually people will understand his vision"

Starfield, despite having fallen short of lodging itself as firmly in the bit of humanity's collective psyche labelled 'the good shit' in comparison to its Bethesda-made siblings, will still achieve something akin to that at some point. Eventually, the man who composed the space RPG's soundtrack reckons, it'll "become something that will be legendary". Why? Because Todd Howard's big visionary brain cannot be stopped.

"Todd is one, if not the most creative and invigorating human beings in the industry," Starfield and Fallout 4 composer Inon Zur said in recent interview with RPGSite that's especially worth readiing if you're interested in how game soundtracks come together. "He knows how to allow freedom of creativity on one hand, but also how to steer it to his own vision. He is a visionary. He sees things that people will start to find out years later."

Daniil Medvedev: “People don’t see the toll” tennis puts on top athletes

The former world No. 1 became the latest to speak out about the challenge of travel and ever-changing routines after a first-round win at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Daniil Medvedev joked at the Australian Open that he wasn’t ready to launch into podcasting just yet, leaving the former world No. 1 to make the most of the press conference format to achieve the same effect.

His latest turn behind the mic at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships saw him monologue about the state of the game and the ever-increasing challenges top athletes face to achieve elite levels of consistency.

Only grand slams and masters tennis tournaments should have ranking points: Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev says dropping smaller events like Hong Kong Open would ease pressure on players to play 11 months of year

Daniil Medvedev has called for a streamlined ATP calendar with only grand slams and masters 1000 tournaments offering ranking points, though the Russian concedes such reforms would be difficult to implement.

Top players are obligated to compete in the four majors and eight masters events, with the world rankings breakdown reduced from ‌19 to 18 tournaments in 2026 after the men’s body removed an ATP 500 commitment.

World No 11 Medvedev said that if smaller events, such as the Bank of China Hong Kong Open, did not count towards the rankings it would ease the pressure on players who have criticised the 11-month calendar.

    Medvedev’s Solution to Streamlining Schedule

Daniil Medvedev suggests trimming tournament ranking points to streamline the schedule.

Speaking to the media in Dubai, Medvedev said he sees one way to shorten the schedule: make the four Grand Slams and ATP Masters 1000 events mandatory and strip ranking points away from all other ATP 500 and 250-level tournaments.

“In general, yeah, I would say make four Grand Slams, I don’t know, 11 Masters, and that’s it,” Medvedev said. “The other tournaments, maybe make them without points or something. Not like exhibitions, but without points or something.

“Because what happens is last year, like, Holger [Rune] got injured in Stockholm, everybody was like, Yeah, but you don’t have to play it. If he wants to be in Turin, he has to, even if it’s not a mandatory tournament. That is where it is borderline. Players don’t even know.”

In 2016, one economist tipped Sydney would thrive on the back of a finance boom. Now he expects the next decade to be different.

Sydney, the nation’s economic engine room, has always had a beating heart: the CBD. But by 2036, one of the most noticeable shifts might not be the types of jobs, but where they are located, according to KPMG economist Terry Rawnsley.

Sydney high schools need to find room for 22,000 more students in the next decade. Where?

In 2016, the Herald forecast the inner-city student population would explode. This is what really happened – and what needs to happen next.

The world of schools and education loves a fad. In the past decade, it has seen plenty: from construction of architecturally impressive new schools with open-plan classrooms to project-based learning to boost “21st century” skills.

But the world of education is sobering up from the cascade of gurus, trends and shiny bright new things of recent years, says Catholic Schools NSW chief executive Dallas McInerney, who oversees almost 600 schools.

He says educators now recognise that it might appear old-fashioned to have students sitting in rows facing a teacher at the front of the room – but it is an incredibly effective way to learn.

The cause? The opening of Sydney’s south-west and west metro rail lines.

“That big transport infrastructure over the next 10 years is going to really reshape how Sydney functions as an economic entity,” Rawnsley says, predicting concentration of the labour market in a singular business district will be dispersed over several centres of economic activity.

People coming off weight-loss injections risk fast weight gain

Slimmers who come off weight-loss injections such as Mounjaro or Wegovy can regain their lost pounds four times faster than those who stop conventional dieting and exercising, new research suggests.

Data published in the British Medical Journal suggests overweight people shed large amounts when using jabs – about a fifth of their body weight – but once they quit they regain 0.8 kg every month, on average.

That means they return to their pre-treatment weight in a year and a half.

"People buying these need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns investigator Dr Susan Jebb, from Oxford University.

Stopping weight-loss jabs leads to much faster rebound than thought – so are they still worth it?

According to the Queen Vault fan website, the song was first recorded by Smile during a session at De Lane Lea studios in London in September 1969.

Merry Christmas, Queen fans: This unreleased prog track is a gem

First played on Brian May’s radio show, Not For Sale (Polar Bear) shows a more melancholy side to Freddie Mercury

Christmas treats don’t come any bigger for Queen fans than a previously unheard track from Freddie Mercury and friends. But the beautifully understated 1973 out-take Not For Sale (Polar Bear) is less a show-stopper than a seasonal curio – a melancholic stocking filler rather than a cracker to file alongside Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Ga Ga or even the cheesy Thank God It’s Christmas.

Not For Sale was debuted by Queen guitarist Brian May on a special festive broadcast on the Planet Rock radio station on Monday evening. If relatively subdued by Queen standards, the tune nonetheless has a wonderfully haunting quality – especially when a young Freddie weighs in on the chorus with a goose bump-conjuring falsetto.
