Thousands of beachgoers take advantage of Perth’s lingering summer-like picture-perfect weather

Perth is in the midst of a warmly welcomed hot streak that has the city feeling like it’s summer.

The mercury hit 31C on Sunday, with thousands flocking to the beach to make the most of the April sunshine that will continue well into this week.

Monday was forecast to hit 27C before it returns to 30C on Tuesday and continues in the high 20s for the next two days.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the April warm spell was slightly above the month’s usual average of 26C, but not unusual.

“Temperatures are expected to be in the high 20s or near 30 degrees and drop back into the low 20s from Friday,” the BOM spokesperson said.

‘Harrowing’: Cyclone Narelle leaves graveyard of turtles, dolphins and seabirds in Western Australia

Exmouth local says devastating impact on wildlife along the coastline is ‘hard to put into words’

As the flooding from Tropical Cyclone Narelle’s violent visit to Exmouth subsided and the winds dropped, Brinkley Davies headed to Graveyards beach.

The beach, at least according to some Exmouth locals, got its name because of the tendency for turtles to get stuck on the dunes.

But on Sunday morning, this stretch of sand in remote Western Australia had turned into a literal graveyard, strewn with thousands of baby turtles and turtle eggs alongside dead fish, sea snakes, dolphins and seabirds.

Work continues on cyclone-hit ports at Dampier and Ashburton

Inspectors are on site at the Port of Dampier and the Port of Ashburton in Western Australia, assessing the damage done by Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle.

Both ports re-opened to some extent on March 28, however significant infrastructure damage is restricting the types of cargo that can be loaded and unloaded.

At the Port of Dampier all general cargo imports remain suspended with damage to the general cargo precinct including the Dampier Cargo Wharf and adjacent floating deck facility. The Bulk Liquids Berth is still operating with fuel imports not affected.

At the Port of Ashburton the Cargo Wharf remains closed for inspections over the next two to three days, with Pilbara Ports committed to communicating updates as it has them.

Perth Bears set sights on Catalans Dragons star in transfer raid

Catalans Dragons' Charlie Staines is tackled by Leigh Leopards' Lachlan Lam during a Super League clash in 2026

Incoming NRL side Perth Bears have reportedly turned their target towards Super League again for another new signing – with another of Catalans Dragons’ standouts in 2026 on their hit-list.

The Bears have already raided top-flight clubs in the United Kingdom, with three Leeds Rhinos stars already agreeing to sign for Mal Meninga’s side in 2027.

England internationals Harry Newman and Mikołaj Oledzki, as well as second rower James McDonnell, have all committed their future to the Bears and agreed to join them when they make their bow in the NRL next season.

Catalans Dragons star Charlie Staines linked with move

CATALANS DRAGONS star Charlie Staines is being linked with the Perth Bears.

That’s according to The Mole at the Wide World of Sports, who has claimed that Staines has a get-out clause to return to the NRL if an opportunity comes along.

Staines, who left the Wests Tigers at the end of the 2025 NRL campaign, has lit up the south of France with the Dragons, registering six tries in eight games.

The 26-year-old signed a three-year deal with Catalans, but the Bears are circling after already luring the likes of Leeds Rhinos trio Harry Newman, James McDonnell and Mikolaj Oledzki.

Catalans Dragons star linked with NRL move as Super League set to lose another top talent

Super League’s top metre maker and Catalans Dragons full-back Charlie Staines has been tipped to make an NRL return just seven rounds into a three-year contract.

Staines has been touted to make the move to Perth Bears, who are still on the look-out for players ahead of their inaugural NRL season in 2027.

Perth have already snapped up the Catalans duo of Toby Sexton and Iszac Fa’asuamaleaui, with the two set to complete one season at the club before making the move to Western Australia for next season.

The Leeds Rhinos trio of Harry Newman, James McDonnell and Mikolaj Oledzki will also be making the switch for next year, as the newly-formed NRL club continue to raid Super League for their top talents.

The group’s Saturday Slikpik 30 ticket, bought at Mirrabooka Millions, scopped the loot after more than three years of playing together.

One member discovered the life-changing win while checking the numbers and quickly raised the alarm.

“I couldn’t believe it,” they said. “I kept thinking, ‘Am I reading this properly?’

“I called my colleague and told them they needed to check our ticket as soon as possible!”

At first, the group believed they had scored a far smaller prize.

    Narrabeen man wins $4m

A man from Narrabeen has won the entire division one prize of four million dollars ($4m) in this week’s Oz Lotto draw.

As the only division one winning entry nationally in Oz Lotto draw 1675, the Narrabeen man secured the entire prize pool of $4m for himself. His winning 10-game QuickPick was purchased on The Lott website and drawn on Tuesday evening (24 March 2026, video below).

Contacted and advised of his win by lottery officials yesterday morning (Wednesday, 25 March), the winner, who is believed to be in his early 30s, was unaware he had won the first prize.

“Far out! I’m just in my car on my way to work. That’s amazing. I had no idea! I purchase tickets into Oz Lotto and Powerball now and then. This was just a QuickPick!

Perth Lotto winner almost missed life-changing call

A Lotto winner from Perth’s south almost missed the phone call of a lifetime, mistaking news of his $15 million jackpot for a cold call.

The hospitality worker scored the entire division one prize in last week’s Oz Lotto draw after hurriedly buying a ticket during a busy day at work.

The man, who is aged in his 40s, said he would usually have played his favourite numbers but instead bought a Slikpik.

“I had customers knocking at the door so I just picked a ticket with random numbers as I was in a rush,” he said.

“I didn’t even think to check my ticket after the draw since they weren’t my usual numbers.”

Perth on alert for drenching as ex-tropical cyclone re-forms and intensifies

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle is forecast to re-form and track south, bringing widespread rain to WA.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns Perth and the South West could see significant rainfall this weekend, an uncommon event for the region.

Falls of up to 50mm are expected in Perth, with higher totals possible in the Wheatbelt and Great Southern.

As ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle continues its epic journey across Australia's northern coastline, bringing widespread rain and flooding, questions are being asked about just how far south it is heading.

Perth on alert as forecast shows cyclone set to impact city

Perth is now on alert as a tropical system tracks towards WA’s north, with forecasters warning it will likely re-intensify into a severe cyclone later this week.

Communities across northern WA are also bracing as the remnants of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle move out of the Northern Territory and into the Kimberley, bringing heavy rain and rising rivers.

By Tuesday night, the system is forecast to intensify back into a tropical cyclone off the coast, before strengthening to at least a category three by midweek.

Bureau of Meteorology’s Jessica Lingard said where the cyclone crosses is still unknown.

“There is a potential crossing anywhere along the west coast at this stage, between Exmouth and Jurien Bay, and we’re not quite sure what intensity that system would be at as it crosses the coast,” Ms Lingard said.

Breaking point: Wildcats forced to get creative

Ahead of their elimination Play-In Game on Saturday night, the noise around Perth’s point guard position has never been louder.

That scrutiny intensified after the Wildcats’ disappointing loss to the Phoenix.

While much of the focus will be on how John Rillie addresses the issue as Perth looks to bounce back against Melbourne United, Chris Anstey believes there’s more than one way to solve it.

“I think it’s going to come from guys who can create on their own, in the absence of a point guard,” he said on NBL Now. “Like David Duke Jr or JLA rolling the ball into the post.

Watch the scoreThis game could have been even more interesting had the Phoenix defeated Melbourne United on Thursday night, but since that did not occur, now the Wildcats have to watch the scoreboard.

Perth has a percentage buffer over Melbourne United, which means they could still hold onto fourth spot if they lose to Adelaide, but only by approximately 10 points or less.

The simpler solution would be to take care of business against the 36ers and not have to worry about percentage coming into play at all.post-season, which could end up being a huge factor in their championship hopes.

Adelaide 36ers star Bryce Cotton ruled out of clash with former side Perth Wildcats due to back soreness

Adelaide 36ers star Bryce Cotton has been ruled out of a critical clash against his former side Perth Wildcats due to back soreness.

The 36ers have announced the league’s leading scorer will be sidelined for Friday night’s game at RAC Arena which will have huge bearing on where both sides finish on the ladder.

Ahead of their final game of the regular season, Perth sit fourth, having the same number of wins as fifth-placed Melbourne United.

The Wildcats will seal their spot in the seeding qualifier with a win and could remain in fourth with a narrow loss, but a defeat of around 10 points or more would drop them down to fifth and into the sudden-death play-in game.

Henshall injury clouds Duke Jr comeback

The return of David Duke Jr gives the Perth Wildcats a timely boost in their push toward the championship, though an injury to rising young talent Ben Henshall has tempered some of that excitement.

The club confirmed on Friday that Henshall will miss the clash with the Brisbane Bullets due to an ankle injury and will be assessed ahead of Sunday’s meeting with Sydney.

In Duke Jr’s absence, Henshall and Elijah Pepper have stepped up impressively. The young guard has hit double-figure scoring in seven straight games, lifting his output when the Wildcats have needed it most.

Duke Jr will suit up for the first time since December 28 after recovering from an elbow injury, while Sunday Dech also returns from illness for the must-win contest at RAC Arena.

Perth Wildcats import David Duke in line for NBL return against Brisbane Bullets after training strongly

Perth Wildcats import David Duke junior only has to get through the rest of the week unscathed to return from a long-term elbow injury after training the house down on Wednesday morning.

Duke hasn’t played since injuring his elbow on December 28 but re-entered training last week and has spent all of this week building his fitness and confidence.

Duke did everything he could have hoped for during training on Wednesday morning. He ran the floor as a point-guard, pushed through traffic to get to the rim, defended strongly, made three-pointers and didn’t appear fatigued.

Coach John Rillie said he would play against Brisbane at RAC Arena on Friday if nothing goes wrong between now and then.
