Danger lurks in Piastri shock as early pecking order emerges; rules fear exposed — F1 Talking Pts

McLaren has been keen to play down expectations for the early part of the season, insisting that it’s a step behind presumed leader Mercedes and even likely contender Ferrari.

The team has been leaning hard into the narrative that not being a works constructor is going to cost it results early in the season, when the engine manufacturers will have a knowledge advantage when it comes to operating the motor.

That may well be true, but on Friday afternoon Oscar Piastri did his best to zero the difference.

‘We seem to be on the back foot’ – Leclerc wary of Mercedes threat in Australia

The drivers, teams and Pirelli report back on all the action from Friday practice in Melbourne, ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.

It was not the ideal opening session for McLaren, who had Piastri going slow on track with a loss of power in the first few laps. While he did get going and completed the session, Norris only managed seven laps before being called back to the garage for a precautionary gearbox change.

On a dramatic Friday at Albert Park, Piastri completed a sizzling second practice session to clock the fastest lap for the day, and Aston Martin design guru Adrian Newey revealed his team arrived at the Australian Grand Prix with just two usable batteries.

‘We seem to be on the back foot’ – Leclerc wary of Mercedes threat in Australia

Oscar Piastri impressed his home crowd as he led the two Mercedes drivers of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell in just the second practice session of the season.

Oscar Piastri finished the first day of running in Australia at the top of the timesheets, beating the Mercedes duo of Kimi Antonelli and George Russell in another eventful hour.

After FP1 saw some drivers face teething problems, a small group were ready to go at the pit lane exit for the day's second practice session, including reigning World Champion Lando Norris, who missed a sizable chunk of the opening session due to precautionary gearbox checks.

What we learned from first F1 2026 Friday at Australian GP

After a long pre-season, Formula 1's finally had its first proper day of 2026 at the Australian Grand Prix – which has given some big pointers for the season opener.

Ferrari and McLaren topped the two sessions – so pre-season favourite Mercedes was never fastest on Friday…so we're in for a surprise, right?

For now, whatever the classification says, nobody doubts that Mercedes is the class of the field. That was revealed by George Russell's impressive long run pace.

While FP2 was patchy in terms of the long run data, it showed Mercedes having the clear advantage with Russell able to run at a pace the rest couldn't match.

Oscar Piastri must push back against McLaren team orders in 2026, says F1 great Damon Hill

Oscar Piastri must adopt a more selfish and assertive mindset in his return to McLaren for the 2026 F1 season, says former F1 champion Damon Hill.

With less than a month before testing in Barcelona, questions linger over the Australian's place at McLaren, since Lando Norris took out the F1 title.

Norris did not win the most races or lead the championship longest, with Max Verstappen taking eight wins – including the last three of the campaign – to the McLaren drivers' seven apiece.

Max Verstappen has warned Oscar Piastri of the dangers of complying with F1 team orders

Max Verstappen has warned Oscar Piastri that “you sell your soul” if you give in to team orders without a clear reason, referencing his supposed tolerance to McLaren intructions last year.

The Australian was 34 points ahead in the Drivers’ Championship after the resumption of the summer break, before notable incidents curbed his progress.

At Monza, Piastri was instructed to hand back second place to team-mate Lando Norris, after inheriting via the Brit’s botched tyre stop.

Other moments, such as his Turn 1 brush with Norris in Singapore and the infamous strategic blunder in Qatar ultimately contributed to Piastri losing the title, finishing behind both Norris and Verstappen.

F1 icon: Why Piastri has the edge over Norris in 2026

Former F1 driver Damon Hill has urged Oscar Piastri to return to the paddock a more selfish driver for 2026.

With less than a month before the new cars have their first outing in Barcelona for testing, the Australian is being advised to consider a mind set shift following the bitter ending to his 2025 campaign.

'History shows Piastri will be even better in 2026'

Oscar Piastri may have just missed out on the title this year, but IndyCar race winner and F1 TV analyst James Hinchcliffe reckons the Aussie will be even more impressive in 2026.

Much has (rightly) been made of the incredible seasons both Lando Norris and Max Verstappen have had. It was a title battle between two titans of the sport that raged all season long and came down to the last lap of the last race.

It was, in fact, a battle between three titans of the sport, which ebbed and flowed, culminating in a final race title decider. Oscar Piastri was the championship leader and odds-on favourite for the crown as far into the year as September.

Oscar Piastri will be looking to strike back next year after missing out on a maiden F1 title to Lando Norris in 2025.

Oscar Piastri has been told his results in the opening rounds of next year's F1 campaign will be critical when it comes to how McLaren manage its drivers during the season.

Piastri and team-mate Lando Norris were left free to race throughout the 2025 campaign as they battled for championship success.

It generated questions late in the year if one should be prioritised as Max Verstappen closed on the pair in the drivers' standings.

Brundle claims Oscar Piastri ‘misread’ after Norris title defeat

Martin Brundle believes that Oscar Piastri was “misread” in F1 2025. According to Brundle, Piastri is not as “stone cold, horizontal” as thought.

But, Brundle regards Piastri as a World Champion of the future, despite that setback of his title defeat to McLaren teammate Lando Norris. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella went a step further, and predicted “multiple” titles in the future of Piastri.

Piastri hoovered up titles on the junior scene, and for large parts of F1 2025, it appeared as though he was set to become Formula 1 World Champion in just his third season.

Piastri was 34 points clear out front after Zandvoort, but fell into a run of six grands prix without a podium. That included a very uncharacteristic error-strewn Azerbaijan GP. Piastri crashed in qualifying, and crashed out in the early stages of the race.
