'One piece away': Wildcats' core ready for another run

Despite their Hungry Jack’s NBL26 season didn’t end the way they wanted it to, there is still plenty of optimism for the Perth Wildcats heading into the 2026-27 campaign.

John Rillie’s side has frontcourt trio Kristian Doolittle, Jo-Lual Acuil Jr. and Dylan Windler all locked in for next season.

As well as that, the Wildcats also have Ben Henshall, Jaron Rillie, Sunday Dech, Noa Kouakou-Heugue, Cameron Huefner and Lat Mayen (club option) on the books for NBL27.

As NBL commentator Felix Van Hofe pointed out, “the Wildcats built their dynasty on retention”, highlighting how important it is for the 10-time champions moving forward.

Perth Wildcats coach John Rillie confident his side is building towards success despite another semifinal exit

Perth Wildcats coach John Rillie has no doubt his side are moving in the right direction, despite their season ending in the semifinals for the third consecutive year.

After securing their participation in the finals by beating Melbourne United in the play-in game, the Wildcats ultimately proved no match for Sydney Kings in their first-versus-fourth series, with the minor premiers securing a clean sweep by running out 14-point winners in the second game at RAC Arena on Saturday night.

Ben Henshall poured in a season-high 20 points but Kristian Doolittle (15) and Jo Lual-Acuil (nine) being below their best left Perth without the firepower to match the minor premiers, who came away 89-75 victors.

Sydney swept Perth out of the NBL26 Semi-Finals 2-0 after the Wildcats lost the cornerstone of their franchise before the start of the season.

Is it a positive or a negative for the winningest club in NBL history to make it as far as it did without now six-time NBL MVP Bryce Cotton in a season they went 21-12 while searching for a replacement star, including Americans Mason Jones and David Duke Jr?

One Piece season 2 was worth the long wait

Live-action adaptations of anime have a downright atrocious track record, so when Netflix announced it would be tackling One Piece, one of the most beloved animanga around, there was a healthy dose of skepticism. How could the streamer possibly do such a lengthy and fantastical series justice? It certainly didn’t help that it had butchered one of the medium’s classics, Cowboy Bebop.

But despite these poor odds, the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy made the jump to three dimensions with aplomb, capturing the spirit of its source material in each impassioned speech about impossible dreams and every phone call made using telekinetic snails. Then came a two-and-a-half-year break, which took a bit of the wind out of its sails. Thankfully, the second season—titled Into The Grand Line—was worth the wait. Showrunners Matt Owens and Joseph E. Tracz demonstrate a continued understanding of this tale, and while small cuts here and there dampen a few subplots, the big moments come across with powerful sincerity. One Piece: Season 2 First Reviews: Bigger, Better, Richer, and Even More Engaging than Season 1

When Netflix announced it was adapting the long-running Japanese manga and anime series One Piece into a live-action series, fans were understandably a bit wary but hopeful nonetheless. Thankfully, with original manga author Eiichiro Oda on board as a consultant, the end result was a widely embraced success, with season 1 earning a Certified Fresh Tomatometer score of 86% and a Popcornmeter score of 95%. Naturally, fans couldn’t wait for the second season.

Well, One Piece: Season 2 (aka Into the Grand Line) is almost upon us, and the first reviews for it are even more effusive with praise than they were for season 1, with critics calling it an effective expansion of the story’s world, populated by fun characters and infused with an infectious energy.

‘One Piece’ Season 2 Cast Guide: Everyone Joining the Straw Hat Pirates as They Enter the Grand Line

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of “One Piece” set sail in 2023, introducing a new audience to the sprawling pirate adventure first imagined by creator Eiichiro Oda. The series follows aspiring pirate captain Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and his growing crew — the Straw Hat Pirates — as they search for the legendary treasure known as the One Piece.

Season 1 ended with Luffy assembling his core crew — swordsman Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu), navigator Nami (Emily Rudd), storyteller Usopp (Jacob Romero Gibson) and cook Sanji (Taz Skylar). After defeating the pirate warlord Arlong and officially claiming their ship, the crew leaves the East Blue behind, setting their sights on the Grand Line — a dangerous and unpredictable stretch of sea where the world’s most powerful pirates chase glory and treasure.
