Federal police urged to investigate 'concerning' subsea cable fault

Two separate cables in the Submarine Cable Protection Zone off Perth had both experienced faults in short succession over the weekend.

The cables are vital for international communications between Australia and the rest of the world.

The cables' owner, Subco, is urging the Australian Federal Police to investigate.

Two subsea cables off the coast of Perth, vital for international communications, suffered a fault over the weekend, and the company that owns them urgently wants to know what happened.

The chief executive of the cable company Subco, Bevan Slattery, wrote on LinkedIn yesterday that two separate cables in the Submarine Cable Protection Zone off Perth had both experienced faults "straight after each other and in close proximity to each other".

AFP assessing report in connection with Perth cable faults

The Australian Federal Police is assessing a report of a potential crime after the owner of two undersea cables laid in protection zones near Perth revealed faults commonly attributed to ship activity.

Bevan Slattery, co-chief and founder of SUBCO, which owns the two Indigo cable systems, confirmed to iTnews that the company reported the incidents to the AFP which, he said, occurred near each other and at a similar time.

Slattery first raised the alarm about the incidents in a post on LinkedIn on the weekend, shortly after SUBCO detected “shunt faults” on its Indigo West and Indigo Central cable systems, which together connect Singapore and Sydney with a landing at Perth in-between.

Why police took 20 hours to identify Oallen 'body' in suitcase as lifelike doll

A forensic expert says the Oallen case highlights why investigators must resist disturbing suspected human remains. (ABC News.)

Police took the suitcase found at Oallen to a mortuary for examination rather than risk destroying fragile evidence at a potential homicide scene.

Forensic expert Xanthe Weston says the 20-hour time frame was not extraordinary and highly realistic dolls can be mistaken for human remains

The more than 20 hours it took to establish suspected human remains found in a suitcase near Goulburn were actually a life-like doll highlights the painstaking process required to preserve a potential crime scene, according to a forensic expert.

Suitcase body found in dead zone with no CCTV or phone signal

Police have confirmed what was thought to have been a body found stuffed in a suitcase left in remote NSW bushland was in fact a “lifelike” doll.

Police were called to the grisly discovery in Oallen, about 60 kilometres south of Goulburn, at 12.50pm on Sunday.

Police said a lifelike doll stuffed in suitcase in rural NSW had nose piercing, “bruises and grazes”. nine

Police say what were believed to be human remains in a dumped suitcase in NSW are not human at all. Nine

A media release on Sunday night said a body had been found in suitcase, believed to be that of a woman.

'Body in suitcase' found in Australia turns out to be lifelike doll

Australian police called in to investigate a body found in a suitcase have concluded that the "victim" was in fact a lifelike doll.

The suitcase was discovered by two men on the side of a road near the small village of Oallen, about 230km (143 miles) south-west of Sydney.

On Monday, police announced a murder investigation, sparking intense interest in the case but backtracked hours later, saying forensic testing had proved the contents were not human.

The contents in the suitcase were "mistaken for a human originally, so they are very realistic in terms of looking like human remains," said Supt Linda Bradbury from the Hume Police District.

When arrests aren’t worth the hassle: the quiet unravelling of policing in Scotland

Policing is being reshaped in ways few outside the service understand. But fewer officers, fewer cells and weaker supervision risk leaving communities with a service that looks very different from the one they expect.

Policing will never escape public fascination. The most gripping television dramas are almost always police-based, and the sheer variety of things we expect officers to deal with means the subject never becomes dry.

A few minutes on social media will also confirm it’s a subject on which everyone is an expert, or at least has an opinion. That being said, its almost singularly unique positioning in the nation’s psyche means being in the spotlight is something that goes with the territory – no matter how much those on the first floor of Tulliallan wish it didn’t.

Crime rises in Scotland as SNP preside over huge drop in police officer numbers

Police officer numbers in Scotland have fallen to its lowest level in two years despite rising levels of crime as well as increasing numbers of protests taking place across the country. And underfunding from the Scottish Government has been blamed for the lack of cops on the beat.

According to the latest crime figures, the number of sexual crimes recorded by Police Scotland increased by 10% last year and are now at their highest level since 1971. The total number of sexual crimes, which include rape and attempted rape, sexual assault and communicating indecently, rose from 14,892 to 16,430. There was also a 23% increase in offences under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act, which rose from 2,573 to 3,170 in 2025-26.

‘You could see it coming’: Along the Thames, triumph turns to torment

London: Sad but not surprised. That’s how English football fans are feeling when I talk to them as they leave the pub where we’ve been watching the World Cup semi-final against Argentina. Their team has just lost 2-1 and the nation is gutted. The pub empties quickly.

“You could see it coming,” says Amy, who lives near this classic English pub, The Steam Packet in Chiswick, just near Kew Bridge in western London. She tells me she could sense the English team were tired even though they played well. “I think we played brilliantly today, which is why it’s an even harder loss.”

Police are investigating after a high school student was stabbed in Melbourne's south-east on Monday afternoon.

A 15-year-old boy was found with serious injuries after an altercation between a group of teenagers, Victoria Police said.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics responded to reports of an incident in Cranbourne North at around 3:20pm, where they treated one patient.

"A teenage boy was transported by road ambulance to hospital with upper body injuries in a serious condition," a spokesperson said.

Police said the group of teenagers fled the scene on foot.

The Department of Education said the injured teenager was a student of Alkira Secondary College but that the assault took place "outside the school and after school hours".

Teenage student hospitalised after stabbing attack near school

A teenage boy has been hospitalised with serious injuries after being attacked by a group of youths after school in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs on Monday.

Police said three boys were walking home near Cranbourne North’s Alkira Secondary College at 3.20pm when they turned around and saw three hooded youths, aged between 16 and 20, charging at them with a “variety” of weapons including “knives” and “swords”.

Detective Inspector Mark Patrick said the three offenders, who remain on the run, let out a collective scream before attacking in Sabel Drive.

“It was similar to a war cry when you go into battle … it appeared to be to get [the victims’] attention to create fear,” he told a press conference.
