Federal politics live: Albanese and Wong to visit Brunei and Malaysia to shore up fuel supply

Australia has not received a request to participate in US President Donald Trump's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Anthony Albanese says.

Anthony Albanese also joined ABC's News Breakfast this morning, reiterating the US hasn't asked Australia to assist in its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

The prime minister says Australia has already extended the timeframe that an Australian military surveillance aircraft, the E-7A Wedgetail, will spend in the Middle East. The government deployed the plane following a request from the United Arab Emirates.

Albanese was asked if he thought US President Donald Trump's blockade would achieve anything.

Federal politics: PM says he's in contact with South-East Asian partners over fuel security — as it happened

The prime minister says he is in contact with South-East Asian partners over fuel security as the war in the Middle East continues.

Meanwhile, the Coalition has called for the federal government to slash the fuel excise and road user charge to alleviate the cost of petrol prices for consumers.

Australian petrol stations report 25% surge in demand as governments plan for ‘biggest energy crisis in history’

Rationing is not under consideration yet as hundreds of retailers report being without one or more types of fuel

Petrol stations are reporting a surge in demand of up to 25% in the past fortnight alone on top of already major spikes earlier in the Iran war as Anthony Albanese comes under pressure to devise a national plan to cushion Australia against the “biggest energy crisis in history”.

The Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association has revealed the scale of the demand on retailers, which has left hundreds of stations across the country without one or more types of fuel.

Albanese’s next step must address the fuel crisis and assure the public

Rule No.1 in politics is that leaders should always project capability and certainty, even in the most uncertain times. When COVID-19 reached our shores, public anxiety about lockdowns and supply chains resulted in consumers stockpiling toilet paper, pasta, meat, baby formula and paracetamol.

The pandemic was a global event, its causes and effects ranging far beyond the capabilities of any single nation’s leadership to control. At that point, the power of federal and state governments to reassure became particularly important.

The decision of the United States and Israel to wage war on Iran, and Iran’s decision to restrict tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation, have already hit our economy hard, despite Australia having had no input into either one (though perhaps Prime Minister Anthony Albanese might have hoped for some sort of warning from our closest security ally of its intentions).

Australia has enough fuel and stocks are arriving on time, Aged Care Minister Sam Rae has said, after being asked about seniors community transport services being cancelled in regional areas because of the cost of fuel.

Nationals MP Kevin Hogan asked: “In my electorate of Page, community transport providers are warning that without urgent fuel cost support, they will have to reduce services to more than 2000 vulnerable people. What is the minister’s plan to ensure recent rising fuel costs do not result in the loss of these essential services?”

Federal politics live: Littleproud to step down as Nationals leader but stay on in parliament

David Littleproud has announced he is stepping down as Nationals leader, saying he believes it is time to transition to a new leader.

He has confirmed he will stay on as the MP for Maranoa.

Andrew Hastie has joined Afternoon Briefing where he's been asked about Australia's contribution to the Middle East war effort.

Australia will send a military aircraft and 85 ADF personnel to the United Arab Emirates to assist in the defence of Gulf nations that have been attacked by Iran.

The shadow industry minister says he doesn't believe Australia's contribution amounts to Australia joining the war in the Middle East.

David Littleproud has quit as leader of the Nationals, admitting that he is “buggered” and needs a break.

Littleproud was joined by his wife, Amelia Littleproud, as he made the shock announcement after question time on Tuesday.

First elected to parliament in 2016, Littleproud is a former agriculture and water resources minister, and has led the Nationals since May 2022.

Littleproud said he intended to stay on in politics, representing the Queensland seat of Maranoa.

“I’m happy to serve in whatever capacity, but I haven’t got the energy to lead,” he said.

Federal politics live: Government dismisses call to criminalise aiding return of IS-linked women

Anthony Albanese says the upcoming Farrer by-election will be a test for both Angus Taylor and David Littleproud in how they handle One Nation.

A lot has been written about One Nation cannibalising the Coalition's vote, but less attention has been given to how the rise of the once-fringe party is also framing our political discourse and activating Labor.

The One Nation freight train is pushing our politics to the right, particularly on issues of immigration. Over the past week, we witnessed the hardening of the rhetoric used by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the so-called ISIS brides.

Albanese was in the parliament when Labor was last in government, and scores of boats arrived. It may not be the same as the ISIS bride issue, but it is adjacent politically, and he knows it can cause an inferno for Labor if it doesn't shut the issue down.

Our women in Syria should have support they deserve

I applaud the PM’s view that if they make the bed they should lie in it (“Road to Damascus”, February 21). It completes his transition from left-wing table thumper to national leader. It has a much wider application, though. Smokers with lung cancer, or drinkers with liver disease? No Medicare for you. Speeding and hit a tree? Get yourself to the nearest private hospital. Finally, tell the abusive boss to stick it? No JobSeeker payments for you. Go to a conflict zone and get injured or imprisoned? Suck eggs, sister. Imagine the savings: money that could be better used. David Neilson, Uralla

Federal politics live: Australia drops push to host COP31, Chris Bowen to lead summit

Australia has ceded the COP31 climate summit to Türkiye but Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen will be the president of the summit pending Ankara's approval.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has defended the government's action on immigration, saying Labor has reduced migration numbers.

The Coalition is forming a policy on immigration, which some reports suggest will include tougher screening.

Speaking to ABC Radio Perth, he says a spike in migration after the COVID pandemic was expected, but that numbers are now moderating.

Albanese says the Coalition's pivot to immigration shows they want to divert attention away from their energy policy.

Australia has formally dumped its bid to host next year’s United Nations COP31 climate summit in Adelaide and ceded the event to rival Turkey.

In return for the Turks hosting the summit in the resort region of Antalya, the Albanese government has proposed that Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen shares the presidency of the event with Turkey and that there be a pre-COP summit in the Pacific to act as pledging event towards a Pacific Resilience Fund, an Australian initiative.

Turkey to host Cop31 climate conference after Australia drops push to hold it in Adelaide

Fortnight-long event to be held in Antalya but Australia may lead negotiations

Turkey will host the Cop31 climate conference after the Australian government dropped its push to hold the event in Adelaide at the last moment – despite having invested in a more than three-year campaign.

Independent sources confirmed to the Guardian that the fortnight-long event would be held in Turkey’s Mediterranean resort city of Antalya in November 2026.

The details of a deal were being thrashed out between the countries’ climate ministers, Chris Bowen and Murat Kurum, at the Cop30 conference in the Brazilian city of Belém on Wednesday.
