The ACT teams that produced players such as BBL star and former Australian fast bowler Jason Behrendorff could be scrapped, meaning Canberra's future cricket stars face a much tougher road to the top.

Cricket Australia is considering an overhaul of its national championships, which would mean any young guns of the future would have to force their way into an "Allies" team made up of players from the ACT, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

Ricky Ponting savages 'rank' Ashes moment as Ben Stokes situation compounds England's pain

Aussie cricket legend Ricky Ponting has savaged England all-rounder Will Jacks after his ugly dismissal on day four of the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney. Jacob Bethell's unbeaten century (142no) – his first in Test cricket – helped England take a 119-run lead after they reached 8-302 at stumps. But an injury to captain Ben Stokes dealt a fresh blow to the tourists and their hopes of salvaging a result at the SCG.

Bethell was sensational for the visitors but apart from opener Ben Duckett (42) and Harry Brook (42), the England No.3 had precious little support as Beau Webster (3-51) and Scott Boland (2-34) led the way for Australia's bowling attack. Webster turned to off-spin on Wednesday and extracted some serious turn to remove the dangerous Brook as he looked to form a big partnership with Bethell.

Marnus, Stokes clash in fiery end to captivating day

Joe Root hit his second century of the series but Travis Head's blitz and a spicy confrontation between Marnus Labuschagne and Ben Stokes lit up Sydney late

Joe Root's bittersweet Australian redemption campaign continued as he equalled Ricky Ponting's mark of 41 Test hundreds, before the home side's battering ram Travis Head rounded on his third century of the series as he helped wipe off close to half of England's advantage in rapid time.

Root's 160 crafted over almost seven hours across the opening two days of Sydney's dead-rubber fifth Ashes Test could have tallied higher still if not for his teammates' wasteful approach in arguably the best batting conditions of the series.

Over the last two decades, Australian prime ministers have become reliable guests of the McGrath Foundation’s high tea, the high-powered annual fundraiser on day three of the Pink Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. But Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is one of two glaring omissions from those expected to show face at today’s function.

Albanese, along with his Communications and Sport Minister Anika Wells, are expected to steer clear of the SCG on Tuesday, amid mounting pressure on Labor to launch a federal inquiry into last month’s Bondi massacre. Instead, Albanese is scheduled to travel to flood-ravaged far north Queensland, according to one person familiar with his schedule.

Brisbane: For most of Friday, Brydon Carse’s bowling could have been summed up by the ditty the Barmy Army penned for Mitchell Johnson during the 2010/11 Ashes.

“He bowls to the left, he bowls to the right, that Mitchell Johnson, his bowling is …” . You get the picture.

Just as it appeared England were heading to the point of no return, Carse turned from whipping boy to England’s unlikeliest deliverers of hope.
