Three-time AFL premiership player Jack Gunston is extending his career at Hawthorn for at least another season after signing a new one-year deal.

The key forward has committed to an 18th AFL campaign on the back of impressive form with the Hawks, having kicked 40 goals from 12 games to help them sit third on the ladder.

It comes after a career-best 73 goals last year helped him earn a second All-Australian nod.

Premiership Eagle calls time after latest injury blow

WEST Coast premiership forward Jamie Cripps has announced his immediate retirement, with a serious knee injury in the WAFL last month ending his 277-game career.

Cripps, who was a key player in the Eagles' 2018 premiership team, told teammates on Tuesday afternoon that he had played his final game after 16 seasons at the elite level, departing as one of the most selfless and respected forwards in the club's history.

The 34-year-old was a tireless runner who filled a valuable half-forward role through the club's successful era under Adam Simpson, with coaches and teammates often highlighting his hard-working and no-fuss approach to the game.

West Coast Eagles premiership forward Jamie Cripps has today called time on his stellar career after 16 seasons at the elite level.

How Lions' premiership formula is breaking without its foot soldiers

Every premiership team needs its role players – and Brisbane is running in short supply at the moment

OF THE issues troubling Brisbane – team defence, injuries and inconsistent form – one has slipped through the cracks.

The Lions have been playing without their role players, their worker bees, their foot soldiers – and they're struggling to plug the gaps.

The scales that have the stars on one side and the helpers on the other is out of balance.

While most of the focus has been on the form of the team's star-studded midfield, as it should be, it's the absence of the lesser lights that has hurt just as much.

‘Exact situation’: Undeniable evidence premiers can’t be ruled out… but ‘gaping hole’ looms large

Despite the prestige that comes with winning back-to-back premierships, these Brisbane Lions are hardly unfamiliar with adversity.

It’s part of the reason why club icon and premiership star Alastair Lynch believes it’s not yet time for “alarm bells” at Springfield, in spite of consecutive concerning losses – and one “huge hole” that looms large in the short and long term.

The three-time flag-winner believes Brisbane still has the requisite “hunger” to surge to a vaunted three-peat, but there’s a “major concern” that must be addressed.

Hard home truths after 'disaster' help Lions refocus

After a meeting where plenty of home truths were said, the Brisbane Lions have turned back to their valued philosophies as they attempt to put last week's horror show behind them.

The defending premiers' aura took a battering last week when they conceded a record 14 goals during the third quarter of their 78-point loss to GWS.

It left Brisbane nursing a 6-5 record in their pursuit of a third-straight flag, and they will receive another huge test on Saturday when they take on a red-hot Fremantle outfit at the Gabba.

Hearts call for 'fair opportunity' in title finale as Don Robertson named as referee

Hearts fans watch the closing stages of Celtic's match at Motherwell

Hearts' owners have pleaded for the destination of the Scottish Premiership title to be "decided by the players on the pitch" rather than by match officials.

After it was announced that Don Robertson will take charge of Saturday's decider with Celtic, the Foundation of Hearts (FoH) fans group – majority shareholders of the club – said the Tynecastle outfit had concerns about recent decisions.

On Wednesday, Celtic were awarded contentious last-gasp penalty, which Kelechi Iheanacho converted to earn the defending champions a 3-2 victory.

That result, coupled with Hearts' 3-0 win over Falkirk, means Celtic trail by one point going into the final-day showdown.

Broncos premiership winner linked to Perth Bears after seeking early release from new team

The Perth Bears are reportedly eyeing Tyson Smoothy after the Broncos premiership winner asked new club Wakefield Trinity for an early release from his contract. Smoothy helped Brisbane win the NRL premiership in 2025 before signing a three-year deal with Wakefield in the English Super League.

However the 26-year-old is keen to return to Australia for family reasons and has asked Wakefield to release him from the second and third years of his contract (2027 and 2028). The Daily Telegraph is now reporting that Mal Meninga’s Perth Bears are keen to snap him up if he gets his release.

It’s unlikely that Brisbane would have an appetite to bring Smoothy back considering they’ve already res-signed Cory Paix and have young guns Blake Mozer and Cameron Bukowski waiting in the wings. A valuable utility man, Smoothy can play hooker and back-row and played a ‘Mr Fix-It’ role for Brisbane on their march to the premiership last year.

Powell unsure if Smoothy will stay at Wakefield

Tyson Smoothy signed a deal until 2028 when he joined Wakefield last year

Wakefield Trinity coach Daryl Powell admits he is unsure if Australian hooker Tyson Smoothy will remain at the club beyond the end of this season.

Smoothy, 26, joined Wakefield in 2025 from NRL side Brisbane Broncos, signing a three-year deal until 2028, but it is being reported he wants to return to Australia.

Powell was reluctant to go into detail over Smoothy's circumstances, but could not say if he would still be at the club next season.

"He had some family stuff for our last game with his little one, and I won't expand on that," Powell told BBC Radio Leeds.

Former NRL utility keen on a return to Australia

At the beginning of 2025 Tyson Smoothy announced he would be joining Wakefield Trinity on a three-year deal, considered a massive steal by the Super League outfit.

Following the announcement, Smoothy went on to have a breakout season in which he won a premiership with the Brisbane Broncos.

The form has continued at Wakefield too, but the 26-year-old reportedly has no desire to see out the remainder of his contract.

According to Love Rugby League, Smoothy's family is keen to return to Australia, and the hooker has approached the club about an early release.

It has also been reported Wakefield have no desire to let him go mid-season, but are not against severing ties at the season's end.

Hawthorn Football Club is deeply saddened to learn the passing of Life Member Geoff Ablett.

Ablett played 202 games for the Hawks across 10 seasons, including being a part of Hawthorn’s 1976 and 1978 premierships.

Ablett was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) at the end of last year, which led to heartfelt and extensive support from the wider footy community as he battled the debilitating condition.

Hawthorn acknowledges Ablett’s significant contribution to the Club and extends its sincere condolences to the Ablett family during this difficult time.

    Vale Geoff Ablett

From the famous footy family, he won two premierships, four Grand Final sprints, and debuted at Tigerland through the courts.

Geoff Ablett, the blisteringly fast Hawthorn premiership wingman who went to Richmond, via the Supreme Court, for 16 games across 1983 and 1984, has died. He was 71.

Ablett died April 29th 2026 from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), his family announced. He had first noticed weakness in his left leg in August 2024, and received a diagnosis on Christmas Eve 2025.

Dubbed ‘Racehorse’, he credited his speed to his mother Colleen, who was the Gippsland 100-yards champion. Ablett himself won four Grand Final Half-Time Sprints from 1979-1981 and 1985.

Hearts stumble in title fight despite Shankland and Braga strikes against Livi

Lawrence Shankland and Claudio Braga used their heads at one end to help Hearts back to the top.

But, as the boys at the other couldn’t keep theirs, the lead was contained to just a solitary point as Derek McInnes’ let two painfully slither away.

Having fallen behind in the standings for the first time in 189 days due to Rangers’ win the previous day, scrutiny turned straight onto the Tynecastle response.

Facing the team at the foot of the table, it felt like one McInnes men really needed to win to re-stamp a proper authority at the summit.

The fact they didn’t was a bitter disappointment. Chuck in the additional fact that they were also in front and in position to do so just added to their frustration.

Team news ahead of trip to Parkhead

Midfielder Milly Boughton has completed a loan deal from defending champions Hibernian until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old Australian youth international spent her formative years close to the Australian capital, Sydney, with the youngster breaking through at the Football New South Wales Institute.

The London-born central midfielder returned to the English capital at 16-years-old, joining West Ham United’s academy, and after a successful trial, Boughton began training with the first-team. Her first season within the club’s academy proved to be a productive one, with Boughton scoring eight-goals in 12-appearances for the Irons.

In 2023, Boughton departed West Ham for the academy of close-rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Boughton soon made her competitive first-team debut for Spurs, after being substituted in a three-nil victory over Bristol City in the English Women’s League Cup.

Celtic are there for the taking. Weak at the back, a bit washy in midfield, no real striker apart from Nygren – he cant always get them out of jail

It all changed with Trusty's sending off. Hibs handled the game very well after that.

Celtic couldn't get any momentum and it's a brilliant goal from Kai Andrews.

It looks like Hearts are the team that can only throw it away. They are in an unbelievable position.

Celtic and Rangers have still got to play each other twice.

The permutations from all these games are incredible. That's what makes this season so exciting.

Rangers fight back to salvage point but criticism will follow after Livingston draw

What other twists and turns can come in this title race? Rangers were held and Celtic were beaten. Hearts were the winners this weekend, that is for sure. The gap to the league leaders now stands at four for Danny Rohl's side.

Rangers found themselves behind inside the opening quarter of an hour as Livingston took a surprise lead. Robbie Muirhead provided the cross from a free-kick and Brooklyn Kabongo finished emphatically on the angle.

A goal early in the first half was followed by one early in the second. Lewis Smith finished well across goal after Rangers failed to clear their lines. Desperation set in.
