    The surprise offer by the president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, not to attack countries in the neighbourhood so long as their airspace and US bases within their territories are not used to attack Iran has provoked a storm inside the country as the military appeared to contradict him, if not outright overrule him.

    There were also calls for a new supreme leader to be installed as quickly as possible, as a means of marginalising the president. Attacks on facilities in Bahrain and elsewhere have continued, and there were unconfirmed reports that Bahrain had become the first Gulf country to fire back at Iran.

    Why are Iranian leaders sending mixed messages on Gulf attacks?

    Attacks on the Gulf continue as President Pezeshkian’s remarks receive pushback from the powerful IRGC.

    Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has offered an apology to neighbouring countries that have been subjected to Tehran’s retaliatory strikes since the United States and Israel launched a military offensive on the country.

    But Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) expressed its disapproval of the president’s remarks on Saturday, warning neighbouring countries that Tehran would continue attacks if US and Israel used their territory to attack Iran.

    Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is not going to stop attacks while Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran’s parliament, underscored Tehran’s right to self-defence.

    TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Saturday his country is in a full-scale war with the U.S., Israel and Europe ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ’s meeting Monday with U.S. President Donald Trump.

    Pezeshkian said in an interview published on the website of the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday that the war is worse than Iran’s deadly war with Iraq in the 1980s.

    “We are in a full-scale war with the U.S., Israel and Europe; they don’t want our country to remain stable,” he said.

    'Survivor' finale will be interrupted by President Trump speech

    President Donald Trump's primetime address to the nation on Wednesday, Dec. 17 will interrupt regularly scheduled TV programming, including the "Survivor" Season 49 finale.

    Trump announced the 9 p.m. ET speech in a post on Truth Social. He did not specify what he will be discussing or how long the address is expected to last.

    "I look forward to 'seeing' you then. It has been a great year for our Country, and THE BEST IS YET TO COME!" Trump said.

    As a result, major television networks are slated to carry live coverage of Trump's speech. Typically, live special reports cut in on regularly scheduled programming.
