‘What’s the problem?’: Barnaby Joyce defends Hanson’s Italy getaway

One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce has defended party leader Pauline Hanson after she was spotted poolside with billionaire Gina Rinehart at a luxury Italian resort.

The One Nation leader and mining magnate, who is a benefactor for the party, were snapped this week in the Sicilian holiday town of Taormina, made famous in season two of The White Lotus.

“It’s a holiday, isn’t it? I mean, I don’t care if it’s Dolce Gabbana or Prada, as long as you’re paying for it, darling, I don’t care,” Joyce told Today.

“A person’s allowed to have free time and she’s having free time over there.”

The mining billionaire’s meeting with Pauline Hanson was preceded with serious working-from-anywhere.

The photos of Gina Rinehart and Pauline Hanson’s secret Sicilian meet-up have predictably set off a mini volcano. Satirists at The Betoota Advocate have posted three separate stories (so far). Our favourite: HBO’s White Lotus Returns To Sicily For A Deeply Twisted Season 4.

What is apt is the second season of White Lotus wasn’t only in Sicily, but based in the idyllic village of Taormina. The hotel used as a TV backdrop was the Four Seasons’ San Domenico Palace, located less than a 20-minute stroll to the $2000 per night Grand Hotel San Pietro – where Rinehart and Hanson met on the pool deck over the breakfast buffet.

Aussie battler: Hanson joins Gina poolside on White Lotus holiday in Sicily

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has taken a break from her speaking tour of England to spend time with her benefactor, billionaire Gina Rinehart, at a luxury resort in Sicily.

Photos posted to Instagram and first revealed in The Australian Financial Review show Hanson spending time poolside at the Grand Hotel San Pietro in the resort town of Taormina – where the second season of The White Lotus was filmed – while Rinehart swims in the pool.

Rinehart was in Taormina for a fashion show put on by Italian label Dolce & Gabbana on Monday. Rinehart is known to wear the high-end brand, once making headlines by appearing at The CEO Magazine 2022 Executive Of The Year Awards in Sydney in $1600 bejewelled Dolce & Gabbana thongs.

During Newcastle’s clash with the Storm, Ponga came across in cover defence and saved a try with a shoulder charge on Will Warbrick.

Ponga’s shoulder contacted the ball, forcing a knock on. It wasn’t picked up by the officials and play was allowed to carry on. He wasn’t placed on report either.

Ponga sends scare through Origin camp with shoulder issue

Kalyn Ponga sent a scare through Queensland Maroons camp after he went down clutching at his shoulder in Newcastle’s clash with the Storm.

Ponga had two horror moments early in the second half when he threw a risky pass to Greg Marzhew deep in the Knights′ defensive territory.

Marzhew dropped the ball and no urgency to kill the play as Alec MacDonald raced past him and picked it up before finding Jahrome Hughes.

Hughes shrugged off Ponga in a one-on-one attempt and raced away to score.

The try ultimately cost the Knights the lead as Ponga clutched at his shoulder on the ground.

‘A very Italian problem’: inside the fight against the mafia and corruption at the Winter Olympics

Construction works for Milano Cortina have been a lightning rod for suspected infiltration by organised crime, but anti-mafia groups have adopted an approach that will help future hosts

Early on the morning of 8 October, the Provincial Command of the Carabinieri in Belluno put out a press release announcing three arrests, in the culmination of a year-long investigation they called “Operation Reset”. Two of the three were brothers; both were known members of the notorious Lazio Ultras, the Irriducibili, it was stated in the release, and had boasted of having personal ties to former boss Fabrizio Piscitelli, who was murdered in 2019. The crimes the brothers had been arrested on suspicion of had not been committed in Rome, but 400 miles north, in the small alpine ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo, high in the Dolomites, and home, for the next three weeks, to the Winter Olympics.

Vatican's 'Sports Cross' arrives in Archdiocese of Milan ahead of Olympics

The Vatican “Sports Cross” arrived at the Basilica of San Babila in Milan on Thursday evening, one week ahead of the opening of the Feb. 6–22 Winter Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina, Italy.

Since 2012, the Vatican has entrusted the wooden cross designed and created by British artist Jon Cornwall to dioceses hosting the Summer and Winter Olympics.

“It’s an important gesture,” Bishop Paul Tighe, secretary of the Vatican Dicastery for Culture and Education, told EWTN News reporter Paola Arriaza Flynn. “It’s saying something about the Church’s interest and involvement with the world of sport.”

“We want to celebrate the human spirit that expresses itself in so many ways, including in forms of faith,” he added.
