Sydney Airport to auction off thousands of lost items

Sydney Airport is gearing up for its annual lost luggage auction, in which thousands of unclaimed items will go under the hammer in the name of charity.

More than 2300 items left inside the terminal will be up for grabs this year, including 120 laptops, 100 headphones, 350 pieces of jewellery and 150 pairs of sunglasses.

Airport staff have also recovered a few unusual items left behind over the past 12 months.

Among them are an abandoned wedding dress, three skateboards, a Batman Lego set, an air fryer and a circular saw.

Bidding for the lost property will start at $10 and the auction is expected to raise $200,000 to fund free swimming lessons in the airport’s local council of Bayside.

The older you get, the more frenetic the pace of life seems to become.

No matter where you look, social, political and economic change appears to be in overdrive, and the long periods of stability we once enjoyed are becoming increasingly short-lived.

Last year, Australia looked to be on the verge of a slowdown, which was only to be expected after one of the fastest rate hike cycles in history, prompting the RBA to shave a couple of rate hikes off the top.

But after it had cut for the third time inflation again reared its ugly head and the RBA was forced into a sudden about-turn in 2026.

ANZ, Macquarie Bank cut interest rates in stunning trend reversal today: 'Shifted gears'

Two of Australia's biggest banks have given Aussies a glimmer of hope that the rate-hiking cycle could be at its peak. ANZ and Macquarie Bank have today made sweeping cuts to their fixed home loan interest rates, in a clear move against the rate-hiking trend.

ANZ has cut its 2 and 3-year fixed home loan rates by up to 0.10 percentage points, moving in the opposite direction as the other Big Four banks. The cuts bring ANZ's lowest fixed rate to 6.29 per cent for two years.

Macquarie Bank, the country's fifth biggest bank, has also taken the clippers to its fixed rates, cutting them by up to 0.45 percentage points. Its lowest rate is now 6.09 per cent for three years.

Property, a visa and a university job: the Australian links forged by a powerful Iranian politician’s son in Melbourne

The son of Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf – who is leading Iran’s peace negotiations with US – lived and worked in Melbourne, raising questions about national security and sanctions

One of Iran’s most powerful men – who has been leading Tehran’s peace negotiations with the US – has for more than a decade built extensive ties to Australia, including through rental income from at least one investment property that was collected by his son.

As Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf plays a central role in the Middle East conflict and the peace negotiations, Guardian Australia can reveal Iran’s parliamentary speaker and his son have links to a research centre at the University of Melbourne. His 38-year-old son, Eshagh Ghalibaf, also secured long-term Australian residency despite Canada twice rejecting his visa applications.

Ghalibaf family’s Australian links detailed in Guardian report

Guardian Australia reported that Ghalibaf and his son had links to a research center at the University of Melbourne and that rental income from at least one Australian investment property was collected by his son, Eshagh Ghalibaf.

The report also said Eshagh Ghalibaf secured long-term Australian residency despite Canada twice rejecting his visa applications over concerns related to the Iranian regime.

The revelations are likely to raise questions about Australia’s handling of sanctions involving current and former IRGC-linked figures and their families.

Ghalibaf, a former Revolutionary Guards air force commander and police chief, has never been sanctioned by Australia, unlike in Canada.

Is the booming housing market party winding down? If the recent falls in auction clearance rates are an early indication, the answer is yes.

We are a long way from calling this a buyers’ market, but a sharp deterioration in clearance rates – the percentage of properties that go to auction that are sold – is an early signal that over the past couple of weeks, buyers have developed the yips.

In the past two weeks, clearance rates have significantly weakened and in the major markets of Sydney and Melbourne, prices are struggling to move up.

    A $200m compound? Gretel Packer’s new $60m backyard

The Packers are building another compound. Pictured is James Packer with sister Gretel.

Gretel Packer, daughter of the late media tycoon Kerry Packer, ends the year with a huge new backyard snapped up for $59m that more than doubles the size of her grand Sydney estate.

And the $3.3m stamp duty takes the cost to well over $60m.

Recent settlement records for an unrenovated light pink house and a neighbouring vacant block in Bellevue Hill in Sydney’s affluent Eastern Suburbs, next door to Packer’s 1919-built mansion, Winston, revealed her as the new owner.

It was a perfect opportunity for Gretel – older sister to James Packer and estimated by Forbes to have a net worth of around $2.25bn – to expand her luxury compound by an extra 2631sqm, meaning she now owns a 5122sqm compound. A reliable source estimated her property would now be worth about $150m.
