Anrich Nortje's groin injury opens door for another speedster who will play his first Test in two years

Gerald Coetzee will make his Test return as South Africa continue their high-pace approach against Australia.

The 26-year-old comes in as the replacement for Anrich Nortje who sustained a groin injury after bowling only 3.3 overs in the second Test in Gqeberha. The swap of pace bowlers is the only change to the Proteas side that won by an innings and 31 runs at St George's Park.

South Africa have laid bare the motivation to make amends for their last tour of Australia, where they felt as if they were bullied in Pat Cummins' team's backyard.

The Proteas confirmed one change to their side for the deciding third Test in Cape Town from Tuesday, asking quick Gerald Coetzee to be an enforcer at Newlands.

Right-armer Coetzee will play his first Test since 2024 in place of the injured Anrich Nortje (groin) in what will be the Proteas' most important home Test in years.

South Africa’s looming bowling cartel call after spearhead quick’s confirmed omission

South African speedster Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the third and final Test against Australia after succumbing to a groin injury.

The Proteas confirmed their squad for the third Test on Saturday, with Nortje the notable omission after he managed only 3.3 overs at Gqeberha.

No replacement was named in their squad, with the hosts likely to look to Gerald Coetzee, Dane Paterson or all-rounder Corbin Bosch to take up Nortje’s overs.

Third Test live updates: Proteas strike twice as brilliant review ends Renshaw’s luck

That’ll do from us. Australia finish in a strong position.

Josh Inglis will come back tomorrow hoping for a ton with 85 to his name. Alex Carey has 51.

Earlier, Josh Inglis survived a review for lbw off Kagiso Rabada’s bowling. It was given not out but the South Africans thought they had him.

The replay showed it was going way over the stumps and the review was lost.

What an important innings this has been with the game in the balance.

He was a late call-up too after Steve Smith’s injury.

The day is starting to wind down and now Simon Harmer is well and truly in the match.

Marco Jansen belongs to a great tradition but top all-rounders are hard to find

South African stands out, not just because of his height, but England and Australia now find themselves looking for an equivalent

If you were to bioengineer a cricketer in a laboratory, which attributes would you give them? You would make them tall, with long limbs and a whiplash action to extract steep bounce. Add speed, movement both ways and a left arm to offer a point of difference. With the bat, make sure they can whack sixes but also go down the gears when an innings starts to unravel. For an added trait, have them catch meteorites in the outfield and the cordon.

Half-centuries from Alex Carey and captain Mitch Marsh have helped propel Australia to 9-322, setting hosts South Africa a record-breaking quest if they're to wrap up a clean sweep of three wins in the ODI series.

The Proteas, who put the tourists in to bat, will have to pull off the highest successful chase ever in an ODI at Potchefstroom after Marsh powered to his third half-century of the series (56 off 42 balls) at the top of the order and Carey helped iron out some of their middle-order woes with a fine knock of 74.

South Africa v Australia: third men’s one-day international – live

13th over: South Africa 75-2 (Rickelton 42, Breetzke 13) Marsh has sensed an opportunity to get through some quick overs with his part-timers so he chucks the ball to Renshaw. His third ball is a half-tracker that Rickelton dismisses over square leg for six. But there are just two singles elsewhere so it’s not a momentum swinging over for South Africa.

12th over: South Africa 67-2 (Rickelton 35, Breetzke 12) Spin now a Connolly replaces Bartlett. He’s flat through the air to start as SA milk three singles. Then he gives one a bit of flight and beats Breetzke in the air, getting it to grip past his outside edge. They ask politely if there was a stumping. There wasn’t. Breetzke keeps the strike with a drive down the ground to the man in the deep. SA building, but that required rate is climbing close to 7.

India, Proteas fireworks set up virtual quarter-final

South Africa march on into the semi-finals while India will face West Indies in a knockout final Super Eights contest

South Africa and India put on commanding batting performances at the T20 World Cup as the Proteas sealed their semi-final spot while the tournament co-hosts have set up a virtual quarter-final with West Indies.

Zimbabwe were knocked out of the World Cup even before India's record-breaking batting display buried them in Chennai on Friday morning (AEDT), with the unbeaten South Africans' earlier win sealing their fate.

Aiden Markram's men marched on majestically with their captain looking a man on a mission as he powered his side to a nine-wicket rout of the Windies and a place in the final four.

South Africa has beaten the previously undefeated West Indies, and India has thumped Zimbabwe to send the Proteas into the T20 World Cup semifinals.

South Africa joins England in the semis, although there are still four Super Eights games remaining.

The semis will be played next Thursday and Friday morning AEDT, with the final the following Monday from 12:30am.

India has posted the second-highest total in the history of the men's T20 World Cup, beating Zimbabwe and ultimately helping South Africa into the semifinals.

South Africa has been dismissed for its lowest ever T20 score as India dominated the opening match of the series.

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya returned from a lengthy lay-off to smash 59 off just 28 deliveries in his side's 101-run win.

The five-match series continues on Friday morning (12:30 am AEDT) in New Chandigarh.

India has dismissed South Africa for their lowest T20 international score, bowling them out for 74 in a 101-run win that served both as a warning and an encouragement to Australia.

    South Africa 213 for 4 (de Kock 90, Ferreira 30*, Varun 2-29) beat India 162 (Tilak 62, Baartman 4-24, Jaansen 2-25, Ngidi 2-26, Sipamla 2-46) by 51 runs

If India defied losing the toss and getting the worst of the conditions, theoretically, in Cuttack, South Africa did the same in New Chandigarh to come roaring back into the T20I series, which is now locked 1-1 with three matches to go.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav noted at the toss that the outfield was already dewy when the players were going through their pre-match warm-ups. It was a no-brainer to chase. But Quinton de Kock put India under pressure with a 46-ball 90 studded with seven sixes, and Donovan Ferreira finished brilliantly with an unbeaten 16-ball 30, taking South Africa to an imposing total of 213 for 4.

‘Pure carnage’: Rivals crumble in historic T20 disaster as milestone marred by controversy

Hardik Pandya struck an unbeaten 59 and took a key wicket as India thrashed South Africa by 101 runs in the first T20 international on Tuesday.

Pandya’s 28-ball blitz, laced with six fours and four sixes, powered reigning world champions India to 175-6 after they were put in to bat first in Cuttack.

The Indian bowlers then combined to skittle South Africa for their lowest T20 total of 74 in 12.3 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series as part of their build-up for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February-March.
