Why free public transport is a terrible idea

Australia’s urban sprawl makes mass transit extraordinarily expensive, and the fare experiments in Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland aren’t helping.

Once you make something free, it’s hard to start charging. And should we charge for public transport? We might not like what we get if we don’t.  Kate Geraghty

Whether as a response to the oil crisis or just sheer political expediency, Australia has recently embarked on a populist experiment in mass transit.

In Victoria, public transport is free for the second month running, and will be half-price for the rest of the year. Tasmania’s buses and ferries are free until July. Both states have tied their concessions to the fuel crisis.

The Victorian government is extending its free public transport initiative for another month to include May.

Public transport fares across both metro and regional networks will then be half price from June 1 until the end of the year.

Public transport will be free in Victoria for another month, and fares will then be slashed by half until the rest of the year, the Victorian government has announced.

The extension of the free public transport initiative has been designed to help curb demand for fuel and provide economic relief amid the knock-on effects of the conflict with Iran.

Free public transport would cost Victoria $1 billion a year if made permanent – a move being urged by the state Greens but which transport experts caution would divert funds needed to expand and improve services.

Premier Jacinta Allan on Sunday announced that her government would extend its free public transport policy for a second month, with free travel until the end of May, followed by half-price fares until the end of 2026.

Labor says the initiatives – intended to deliver hip-pocket relief and reduce fuel demand during the oil crisis – will cost about $400 million, with discounted travel to end a month after the November state election.

Which states get a public holiday for Anzac Day?

Many people will be laying wreaths and wearing poppies for Anzac Day on Saturday.  (ABC News: Che Chorley)

Anzac Day is coming up on Saturday, but does that mean you get a long weekend?

Anzac Day is a public holiday in each state and territory.

When Anzac Day falls on a weekend, many employees are already not working because they have weekends off.

Some state governments decide to observe a public holiday on a weekday, which results in those workers having a day off work.

This year, that bonus day off is on Monday — but that's not Australia-wide.

Only three of Australia's eight states and territories have public holidays on Monday.

Anzac Day falls on a Saturday this year, which means in Queensland we don’t get an extra day off.

However, restrictions to opening hours and alcohol sales apply just as if the Saturday were a weekday Anzac Day public holiday.

That means non-exempt businesses must remain shut on the day, and some exempt ones can’t open until 1pm or 1.30pm.

Large retailers, including supermarkets, department stores and hardware shops, are “non-exempt shops”, and must remain closed on Anzac Day.

So that means no Coles, Woolies, Aldi, Bunnings, Myer, David Jones, Kmart, Target, or Big W (except the Woolworths at Brisbane Airport, which is open from 1pm).

Anzac Day is held on 25 April each year to commemorate Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who have served and died in military combat.

The date marks the landings at Gallipoli, Türkiye, during the First World War in 1915, the first major military action fought by Australian soldiers during the conflict.

Each year, the sacrifices made by Anzac soldiers in that and all subsequent conflicts are honoured through dawn services, marches, and performances of the Last Post.

Is Anzac Day Saturday or Monday? And what about shops, surcharges and pay?

The national day of remembrance held annually on April 25 will look a little different this year due to it falling on a Saturday.

Anzac Day is one of just three-and-a-half days a year when almost all shops must be closed under the Shop Trading Hours Act.

But as it falls on a weekend, the public holiday is next Monday (the 27th).

That means most shops must close on Saturday until 1pm. But businesses also need to work out how to calculate staff pay for Saturday, or Monday.

The national day of remembrance held on April 25 commemorates the 1915 landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at Gallipoli during WWI.

Public transport in Victoria will be free until the end of May and then half-price to the end of 2026, as the state government expands its cost-of-living policy while fuel prices stay high.

Premier Jacinta Allan will on Sunday announce the major discounts to travel on all public train, tram and bus trips, in an extension of Labor’s free public transport for April.

The $400 million policy, a key part of the government’s May budget, extends free public transport until the end of next month and halves fares from June 1 until the end of the year – a month after the state election.

Vic extends free public transport, defying IMF inflation warning

The Victorian Labor government is extending its free public transport offer for another month, and will then offer half price fares until the end of the year, in a $400 million election sweetener and response to war in the Middle East.

The free trains, trams and buses – both for metropolitan and regional lines – covered April at an estimated cost of $71 million in foregone revenue and will now be extended across May with half price fares promised to continue beyond the November state election until the end of the year.

The ACT was going to be the only state or territory not to mark Saturday, April 25 as a public holiday this year because it falls on a weekend.

Industrial Relations Minister Michael Pettersson announced a reversal on the decision on Monday night after meeting with shopkeeper union delegates last week.

Let's take a look back at some of the people we lost in 2025.
