    Push to tax gas companies 'ripping up our oceans' as Gorgon plan approved

    Natural gas taxes are back in the fray after the expansion of Australia's largest project received environmental approval ahead of Senate inquiry hearings this week which will probe how resources are taxed.

    Australia's offshore petroleum regulator NOPSEMA has approved an environment plan for further development of US-based multinational Chevron's Gorgon project, off Western Australia's north-west coast.

    Chevron is planning to install new wells and pipelines to maintain the Gorgon project's gas production rates of about 15.6 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) a year.

    Over 30 years this would equate to about 468 million tonnes of LNG.

    China’s push for hydrogen-powered planes gets boost amid Iran energy crisis

    The maiden flight of the most powerful plane of its kind was hailed by state media as establishing a ‘complete technological chain’

    The 7.5-tonne uncrewed aircraft is powered by the world’s most powerful hydrogen turboprop of its kind, capable of generating more than 1 megawatt.

    The engine operated normally and remained in good condition throughout the 16-minute test flight on Saturday, state news agency Xinhua reported, citing the Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC), its developer.

    The aircraft covered 36km (22 miles) at a speed of 220km/h (137mph), flying at an altitude of 300 metres (985 feet). After completing all scheduled manoeuvres, it returned to an airport in Zhuzhou in central Hunan province, according to the report.

    China-built engine fueled by hydrogen test-flown

    A 7.5-metric ton unmanned cargo aircraft powered by the AEP100, China's independently developed megawatt-class hydrogen-fueled turboprop engine, successfully completed its maiden flight on Saturday at an airport in Zhuzhou, Hunan province, marking the world's first test flight of a megawatt-class hydrogen-fueled aviation turboprop engine.

    Throughout the flight, the engine remained in good condition. The aircraft flew for 16 minutes, covering 36 kilometers at a speed of 220 km/hour and at an altitude of 300 meters. After completing its scheduled flight tasks, it returned safely, marking a successful maiden flight, according to the Aero Engine Corporation of China, the developer.

    According to experts from AECC, the successful maiden flight represents a significant leap from technological development to engineering application of domestically developed megawatt-class hydrogen-fueled aviation engines. The technology is also expected to drive coordinated upgrades across the industrial chain, including upstream green hydrogen production, midstream storage and refueling infrastructure, and downstream high-end equipment and new materials clusters, promoting the green, low-carbon and high-quality development of the country's aviation industry.
