CBA punishes Qantas customers in reward points overhaul

Commonwealth Bank is pushing customers to spend their credit card rewards with Virgin’s Velocity scheme instead of Qantas Frequent Flyer points, as part of a dramatic overhaul of its loyalty program.

On Tuesday, the bank announced the changes to its reward points program, which will also include the launch of a new inhouse “Yello” points currency, ahead of an October ban imposed by the Reserve Bank on the credit card surcharges that have funded generous perks to date.

Under the new scheme, customers wanting to convert Yello points to airline points will get more generous rates when exchanging them for Virgin Velocity points than Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

Alan Joyce: Qantas survived COVID because of my decisions

Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce has claimed responsibility for the airline’s survival, three years after a series of customer-service outages and operational failures infuriated the public.

Joyce acknowledged the airline’s dismal post-COVID recovery experience, a chaotic period marked by skyrocketing fares and illegal sackings, in comments broadcast on 60 Minutes. Joyce stepped away from the role two months early in 2023 amid political and consumer backlash.

He said the hard decisions aided the company. “I think Qantas is in survival [mode] now because we got more things right than we got wrong,” he told 60 Minutes’ Tracy Grimshaw. “I recognise that when it comes down to it, the buck will always stop with the CEO on these things, and I accept that.”

Qantas’s new ultra long-distance aircraft has landed on Australian soil for the first time on Friday after a 19-hour test flight from France.

The Airbus A350-1000ULR, designed for Qantas to complete some of the longest commercial flights in the world, set off on a nonstop journey from Airbus’ manufacturing facility Toulouse, France on Thursday, destined for Melbourne.

The planes have been designed to fly up to 22 hours nonstop for the company’s Sydney to London direct route, expected to start in October 2027.

New Qantas plane touches down in Australia after historic 20-hour test flight

Qantas’ new ultra-long-haul Project Sunrise plane has officially landed in Australia for the first time after completing a historic 20-hour test flight.

The specially built A350-1000ULR aircraft, which is set to deliver the airline’s first non-stop Sydney to London flights from late 2027, embarked on the 17,000km flight from Toulouse to Melbourne on Friday.

More than 1 million customers have started to receive emails and text messages explaining how they can apply for a share of a $105 million settlement following a class action against the airline over COVID-19 flight credits.

More than 1 million Qantas customers are being notified via text or email that they may be eligible for compensation in a $105 million flight credit class action settlement.

The Federal Court of Australia has issued notices to impacted customers regarding flights cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic between January 2020 and November 2022.

Those who are entitled to compensation from the airline have until 4pm on October 2 to register for a portion of payment from the settlement.

Qantas flight forced to make remote landing after running into headwinds

A Qantas flight from London to Perth has been forced to make an unexpected landing in a West Australian mining town after running into headwinds without enough fuel to complete its planned journey in one go.

The 17-hour flight, QF10, was scheduled to land at Perth Airport at midday today, but instead diverted to Karratha Airport, about 1500 kilometres north in the Pilbara region.

The 787 Dreamliner was forced to refuel after weather conditions changed en route, a somewhat rare situation that occurs occasionally on long-haul flights.

The surprise landing comes days after Qantas revealed the timing of its ambitious ultra-long-haul Project Sunrise flights, which will connect Sydney to London on flights that can last 22 hours non-stop. It shows how weather could confront the new service.

Qantas London-Perth flight forced into surprise Karratha fuel stop after weather prompts diversion

A Qantas nonstop flight from London to Perth has made an unexpected stop in WA’s north.

The jet was still forced to divert to Karratha about lunchtime, spending about an hour on the tarmac before taking off at 12.58pm.

According to Qantas, changing weather conditions along the 17-hour flight route meant the plane had to make the unscheduled stop.

Qantas A380 grounded amid emergency inspections for wing spar cracks

A number of Airbus A380 superjumbos around the world are set to be grounded for emergency inspections after Europe’s air safety regulator detected cracks in an internal part of the plane’s wing.

Qantas has one A380 that will require inspection before it can be cleared again for flight following the directive from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.

“It has been determined that the cracks found on certain aeroplanes could reduce the structural integrity of the wing,” the agency wrote in its emergency airworthiness directive.

“To address this potential unsafe condition, Airbus determined that an additional special detailed inspection has to be accomplished.”

Qatar Airways Is Suddenly Ending All Airbus A380 Flights To Australia

As the geopolitical tensions from earlier in the year begin to ease in the Middle East, Qatar Airways has been looking to the future when it comes to rebuilding its long-haul international network out of its main hub at Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH). Among the main operational impacts of the 2026 Iran Crisis for the Qatari flag carrier was the temporary grounding of its Airbus A380 fleet.

However, even with the airline now able to begin rebuilding its long-haul network, the A380 is being shelved from certain routes. Perhaps most notably, Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) in the Australian state of New South Wales will no longer be served by Qatar Airways' double-decker widebody quadjets. It last flew there in March, and was due to return in September, but, now, it will no longer do so.
