Qantas discounts millions of fares to bolster weakening sentiment

Qantas is cutting airfares on local flights despite skyrocketing aviation fuel prices as it bolsters bookings amid a broader slump in consumer sentiment.

The move to discount 2 million seats will put pressure on Virgin Australia to follow with its own fare reduction. Shares in both airlines have been sold off as investors fret about the higher cost of aviation fuel – despite Virgin having hedged most of its refining margins at the time it listed on the ASX.

Foreign airlines are already cancelling flights and reducing schedules to Australia, raising the prospect of more disruption if the fuel shock from the US-Israel war on Iran is not resolved by May.

Fiji Airways said last week it would pause some services to Australia and the US because of high fuel prices and market uncertainty.

AirAsia has cut flights from Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne and swapped out narrow-body planes for wide-body aircraft on its Perth-Kuala Lumpur route.

The Malaysia-based airline began reducing Australian services from last Thursday by trimming weekly flights out of Sydney and Melbourne from nine to eight, with more adjustments to start in May.

Qantas cuts domestic flights and raises fares as fuel costs blow out

The airline announced an increase in its fuel cost estimates to up to $3.3 billion for the second half of the financial year. (AAP: Dan Himbrechts)

Qantas estimates its fuel bill could reach up to $3.3 billion due to the ongoing war in the Middle East, more than $800 million above its previous estimate.

The airline says it has reduced domestic flight capacity in May and June, with most cuts on routes between major capital cities.

Qantas say its fuel suppliers and the government continue "to provide confidence in fuel supply for the remainder of April and well into May".

Qantas will cut domestic flights due to higher fuel costs and the uncertainty of the Middle East war, as it flags as much as $800 million in extra fuel costs.

Higher fares, fewer flights: Qantas goes into damage control

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

Cancelled flights, $20,000 one-way international airfares, moves to bolster the balance sheet – sounds familiar? Qantas is in the eye of the US-Iran storm as it attempts to use all weapons in its arsenal to blunt a hit of up to $800 million in additional fuel costs.

It has a COVID-esque feel to it without the existential hue, without ghost flights sold to customers or the airline’s passenger service catastrophe. But make no mistake, Qantas is in damage control as its profit is being ravaged by Donald Trump’s Middle East war.

ASX rises on hope of further US-Iran talks; BHP jumps on China reports

Australian shares advanced on Tuesday, and oil retreated as US President Donald Trump raised hopes for an Iran deal even as a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz took effect.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index rose 44.2 points, or by 0.5 per cent, to 8970.2 at 2.04pm AEST, with six of the 11 sectors stronger.

Asian equities were higher as markets weighed optimism that a US-Iran deal could still be reached despite failed ceasefire talks in Pakistan over the weekend. Sentiment was also supported after Trump said Iran had contacted his administration on potential peace talks, even as the US moved to begin a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in the seventh week of the conflict.

Travellers on Jetstar international flights are being booted from Qantas lounges under a rule change that brings an end to the era of easy lounge access for customers of the low-cost carrier.

While customers flying on Qantas-operated flights, Qantas codeshare flights operated by Jetstar, and Jetstar domestic flights will still have access to lounges with their complimentary invitations “where available”, travellers on Jetstar international flights are now locked out.

Complimentary lounge invitations are “single-visit” digital “lounge invites” provided as a benefit of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program or through a partner credit card program.

Qantas unveils major changes to frequent flyer program and a bumper $1.46bn profit

Airline to allow members to roll over status credits, which unlock lounge access, priority boarding and baggage allowances

Qantas is overhauling its frequent flyer program to entice members to climb its vaunted membership tiers, in changes designed to prevent customers from switching to rival schemes.

The reforms, described by the airline as the “biggest changes to status in program history”, have been unveiled during a hugely profitable period for Qantas, with revenue rising across its domestic, international and loyalty scheme businesses.

On Thursday, Qantas announced planned changes to the loyalty scheme to allow members to roll over some of their status credits – the currency used to determine membership tiers – helping people reach or maintain high levels such as gold and platinum.

Why Qantas’ big profit came with frequent-flyer treats (and cost cuts)

The airline’s record profit demonstrates Vanessa Hudson’s big growth plan. But it also shows there will be turbulence to go through to get there.

The last time Qantas delivered a record profit, in August 2023, it turned out to be the beginning of the end for Alan Joyce. That result quickly came to be used as evidence that the national carrier had got the balance between customers, staff and shareholders badly wrong.

The record December-half number delivered by Joyce’s successor, Vanessa Hudson – $1.5 billion on an underlying basis – lands with Qantas’ reputation in a very different place. Qantas customer satisfaction scores have recovered from the 2023-24 crisis, its brand perception continues to lift, staff engagement is solid and attrition is steady.

Air New Zealand, Emirates, Cathay Pacific and more carriers rated in new 2026 list.

A Gulf airline has been named the world's safest as Qantas, Virgin Australia and fellow Tasman carrier Air New Zealand lose ground in the new rankings.

Etihad has been crowned the top full-service airline for 2026 in an annual list compiled by airline safety and product rating website, AirlineRatings.com

World's safest airline rankings for 2026

Airline Ratings has revealed its Top 25 Safest Full-Service and Low-Cost Airlines for 2026, highlighting excellence in turbulence prevention, crew expertise, and overall safety.

AirlineRatings.com, the world’s only airline safety and product rating website, has announced its Top 25 Safest Full-Service and Top 25 Safest Low-Cost Airlines for 2026 from the 320 airlines it monitors.

In compiling the list, CEO Sharon Petersen stressed that it is important for the travelling public to understand just how narrow the margins are between the world’s safest airlines, and that small numerical differences should not be interpreted as gaps in safety. She explained:

“What stands out this year is how little separates the leaders. Less than four points covered positions one through 14, and at the very top the margins were even tighter, with just 1.3 points separating positions one through six in the full service category. We may be reaching a point where traditional rankings risk being misleading, and where grouping airlines into performance tiers provides a more accurate reflection of reality. All airlines in the Top 25 are world leaders in aviation safety, and claims that one is significantly safer or less safe than another are both sensationalist and false.”

Singapore’s airlines have landed strong results in a global aviation safety ranking for 2026 – Scoot clinched third place among the world’s safest low-cost carriers, while Singapore Airlines took seventh spot in the full-service category.

The annual ranking, published by airline safety and product rating platform Airline Ratings, assessed 320 airlines for 2026, excluding carriers operating fewer than 25 aircraft. Airlines were evaluated across criteria including incident rates, fleet age and size, fatalities, and compliance with international audits and safety standards set by organisations such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

QAN.AX Stock Today: December 24 Virgin Sale Sparks Fare War Jitters

Qantas share price is in focus after Virgin Australia launched Boxing Day fares from $49, stoking airfare competition on key domestic routes. We look at how this could affect yields, booking curves, and near‑term sentiment on QAN.AX. We also map the chart setup, valuation, and risk markers. With holiday travel peaking, investors should watch fare responses, January load factors, and any capacity tweaks. Qantas share price can move quickly on pricing headlines, so clear levels and data points matter today.

Virgin’s Boxing Day sale, with seats from $49 on domestic routes, raises the chance of wider discounting across trunk lines like Sydney–Melbourne and Brisbane. If Qantas or Jetstar match, short‑term yields could soften, which often pressures the Qantas share price. Details and breadth of the offer are here source.

An A380 plane that Qantas highlighted as part of its fleet returning to service last week has suffered an embarrassing grounding in the US after part of its wing peeled apart.

The A380 had been returned to service last week, flying from Sydney to Los Angeles on Sunday, after spending years in storage. The plane was grounded in Los Angeles on Sunday (US time) following damage to the slat on its left wing, which resulted in what appeared to be a hole in the surface.

“A section of the slat on the left wing of one of our A380s was found to be damaged after landing in Los Angeles Sunday local time,” a spokesperson for Qantas confirmed.

Chaos on Qantas plane mid-flight as a 'disruptive' passenger is restrained and removed

A 'disruptive' passenger has been restrained and removed from a Qantas flight bound for Sydney.

Cabin crew on board flight QF654 from Perth requested assistance from Australian Federal Police ahead of touching down at Sydney Domestic Airport on Wednesday morning.

It's understood fellow passengers helped crews to restrain a man who was acting erratically during the five-hour flight.

An AFP spokesperson confirmed officers removed a passenger from the plane.

'More information will be provided at an appropriate time,' an AFP spokesman told Daily Mail.

Qantas Unruly Passenger Removed by Police at Sydney Airport

PERTH- Qantas (QF) removed a disruptive passenger from a Perth (PER) to Sydney (SYD) service after cabin crew requested police support.

Australian Federal Police met flight QF654 on arrival and escorted the individual from the aircraft without confirming any arrest or charges.

The incident began when a male passenger displayed erratic behavior during the five-hour flight from Perth to Sydney. Cabin crew attempted to manage the situation and requested assistance from nearby passengers, who helped restrain the individual until landing.

The airline later confirmed that its crew acted in line with safety protocols and followed standard procedures for in-flight disturbances.
