    A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 rattled eastern Japan, including the Tokyo area, early Sunday, injuring more than 20 people, most of them slightly, officials said. There was no danger of a tsunami.

    According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake occurred at 2 a.m. in Ibaraki Prefecture, at a depth of 70 kilometers, an area of Japan prone to frequent quakes. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a preliminary magnitude of 5.8.

    Twenty-three people were injured in four prefectures in the region — nine in Saitama, another nine in Kanagawa, four in Chiba and one in Ibaraki — according to prefectural officials.

    An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck eastern Japan early Sunday, with its epicenter in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

    The quake was felt across a broad area of Japan, including its northeastern and central regions.

    Parts of Ibaraki Prefecture and central Tokyo recorded an intensity of lower 5 on Japan's seismic intensity scale of 7.

    The earthquake also disrupted railway operations, with some train services delayed, according to JR East and other operators.

    Operators of nuclear facilities in the affected region reported no abnormalities at the Tokai No 2 nuclear power plant in Ibaraki Prefecture, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, or the nearby Fukushima Daini plant.

    Bullet train services on the Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen Lines were halted, Kyodo News reported.

    No anomalies were reported at the Tokai No. 2 nuclear power station in Ibaraki Prefecture, according to its operator Japan Atomic Power Co.

    A moderately strong, 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck in Japan on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

    The temblor happened at 7:46 p.m. Japan time about 2 miles northwest of Noda, Japan, data from the agency shows.

    As seismologists review available data, they may revise the earthquake’s reported magnitude. Additional information collected about the earthquake may also prompt U.S.G.S. scientists to update the shake-severity map.

    A strong preliminary magnitude 7.6 earthquake has struck near Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean, prompting coastal evacuations but no wider tsunami warnings.

    The United States Geological Survey said the quake struck on Tuesday at a depth of 237km.

    Earthquakes at shallower depths are felt more strongly at the surface.

    The jolt was centred at sea, 153km west of Neiafu, the second-largest town in the island nation.

    A major, 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck in the South Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

    The temblor happened at 12:37 a.m. Eastern about 103 miles west of Neiafu, Tonga, data from the agency shows.

    U.S.G.S. data earlier reported that the magnitude was 7.6.

    As seismologists review available data, they may revise the earthquake’s reported magnitude. Additional information collected about the earthquake may also prompt U.S.G.S. scientists to update the shake-severity map.

    An aftershock is usually a smaller earthquake that follows a larger one in the same general area. Aftershocks are typically minor adjustments along the portion of a fault that slipped at the time of the initial earthquake.

    At least 30 people were injured after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit north-eastern Japan on Monday night, forcing thousands of people to evacuate their homes.

    The quake occurred at 23:15 (14:15 GMT) at a depth of 50km (31mi), about 80km off the coast of the Aomori region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. It prompted tsunami warnings which have now been lifted, while waves of 70cm (27in) were seen.

    Some train services have been suspended and thousands of homes have been left without power as a result.

    Authorities have also warned that a stronger tremor could occur in the coming days – urging the public to remain on high alert for at least a week, according to local media reports.

    The earthquake and tsunami warnings prompted orders for about 90,000 residents to evacuate their homes, although the warnings were later downgraded to advisories.

    Tsunami warnings were issued for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, and tsunamis from 20 to 70cm (7 to 27in) high were observed at several ports, the Japan Meteorological Society said.

    A tsunami of 70cm was measured in Kuji port in Iwate, just south of Aomori, and tsunami levels of up to 50cm struck other coastal communities in the region, they added.

    A strong earthquake has prompted a tsunami warning covering a large part of the country's north. 

    Some 90,000 people were ordered to evacuate after the magnitude-7.6 quake struck late on Monday night.

    Initial warnings said tsunami waves of up to 3 metres could hit some areas, but much smaller ones were reported early on Tuesday morning, local time.

    A magnitude-7.6 earthquake has hit near Japan's north-eastern coast, prompting a tsunami warning covering a large part of the country's coastline.

    Reuters reported that some 90,000 people had been ordered to evacuate after the quake struck at 11:15pm, local time, on Monday night.

    A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake has shaken north-eastern Japan, prompting orders for about 90,000 residents to evacuate and tsunami warnings that hours later were downgraded to advisories.

    The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) initially said a tsunami as high as 3 metres (10ft) could hit Japan’s north-eastern coast after the earthquake struck off the coast at 11.15pm (2.15pm GMT).

    Tsunami warnings were issued for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, and tsunamis from 20 to 70cm (7 to 27in) high were observed at several ports, JMA said.

    In the early hours of Tuesday the JMA downgraded the warnings to advisories, meaning it was seeing lower estimated wave heights and less risk of inundation.
