Celebrate Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's 73 years of marriage in 73 glorious photos

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip enjoyed 73 years of marriage together

When it comes to love stories, the tale of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip is one for the ages. It started in the 1930s and blossomed into a marriage that endured for more than 70 years, with the Queen famously describing her husband as her ‘strength and stay’. But before they were Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, they were simply Princess Elizabeth (or ‘Lilibet’) and Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark.

Prince Philip first met Princess Elizabeth in the summer of 1939 when she was just 13 years old. He was five years her senior, about to embark on a career with the Royal Navy. Elizabeth and her sister, Princess Margaret, were on a trip with their parents to Dartmouth’s Britannia Royal Naval College, their father’s alma mater. It was here that the dashing cadet Prince Philip – a distant cousin – entered the scene.

Britain’s royals remember Queen Elizabeth II on what would have been her 100th birthday

Britain’s royal family will mark what would have been the late Queen Elizabeth II’s 100th birthday by unveiling comprehensive plans for a new charity and memorial in central London.

Several events are planned for Tuesday to honor Britain’s longest serving monarch, who died nearly four years ago at the age of 96.

Her son King Charles III and his wife Queen Camilla will visit the British Museum in London to view designs of the planned memorial, while her daughter Princess Anne will officially open the Queen Elizabeth II Garden in Regent’s Park, London. In a video posted on the Royal Family’s YouTube channel, Charles will also reflect on his mother’s legacy.

King honours his 'darling Mama', the late Queen, on her centenary

King Charles has delivered a personal video message remembering the life of public service of his "darling Mama", the late Queen Elizabeth II, on what would have been her 100th birthday.

Although the King warned, in a message recorded at Balmoral earlier this month, that his mother would have disapproved of the current state of the world.

"Much about the times we now live in I suspect may have troubled her deeply," said the King, without revealing any specific concerns, domestic or international.

On Tuesday, which marks the centenary of Britain's longest-reigning monarch, the final design of a traditional bronze statue of the late Queen will be shown to King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Queen Margrethe of Denmark may have abdicated the throne in 2024, but she is still calling the shots in the Danish Royal Family. King Frederik and Queen Mary are the current reigning monarch and consort, but even they bow down to Margrethe’s expectations. The former Queen of the Danes had to give the current Queen Mary an etiquette reminder in front of the crowds during a royal event.

Queen Margrethe marked her 86th birthday on April 16, and celebrated with her son, King Frederik, and daughter-in-law, Queen Mary. They enjoyed a concert from the Royal Life Guards Music Corps outside Fredensborg Palace to mark the occasion. Queen Margrethe’s dog, Tilia, a dachshund, trotted up the steps and received a warm welcome from her owner. When Queen Mary bent down to pet her mother-in-law’s dog, she received a firm correction.

Who is Queen Margrethe II of Denmark? The pioneering former monarch, set designer and illustrator who shocked the world when she stripped her grandchildren of their titles

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, an icon of the international stage, celebrates her 86th birthday on 16 April

Branded the ‘Ashtray Queen’ thanks to her smoking habit and known as ‘Aunt Daisy’ by the European royals to whom she is related (there are many), Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is an international icon, no matter what you call her.

Queen Margrethe II spent decades on the global stage as Denmark's longest-reigning monarch, ruling for 52 years until her shock abdication in January 2024. Her eldest son, King Frederik, is now on the throne alongside his popular, Australian-born wife, Queen Mary.

In 2022, Margrethe made headlines around the world when she made the explosive decision to strip four of her grandchildren – the offspring of her younger son – of their royal titles, almost immediately demoting them from Princes and a Princess to Counts and a Countess.

‘Queen of the ice’: Skating legend’s stark reality as ‘terrible diva’ answers her critics

To say Dutch speed skater Jutta Leerdam divides opinion is an understatement. An Olympic champion already at the Milan-Cortina Games, she goes for a second gold on Sunday in the 500 metres event.

So is 27-year-old Leerdam a leading star of her sport or more of an influencer? She certainly doesn’t go unnoticed – just like her boyfriend, the American YouTuber Jake Paul who has a combined 70 million social media followers and supports US President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, with whom he attended an Olympic ice hockey game.

Leerdam takes gold in speed skating as fiance Paul looks on

As Jutta Leerdam secured her Olympic gold medal, the tears flowed. The only person crying nearly as much was her fiance in the crowd.

Boxer-influencer Jake Paul and Leerdam have been engaged since last year.

And he was in the second row of the stands in the temporary speed skating arena at Rho Fiera exhibition centre in north Milan to watch the 27-year-old win the women's 1,000m gold.

Leerdam, pipped into silver at Beijing 2022, claimed the gold in a new Olympic record time.

It provides a perfect ending to a frenetic few months for Leerdam, who had to rely on a discretionary place at Milan-Cortina 2026 having crashed in qualifying.

How Derik Queen became the Pelicans' future after a shocking draft-night trade

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Hours before the biggest start of his life against Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic, Derik Queen took a seat in a row of chairs between the New Orleans Pelicans' two practice courts following a recent morning shootaround.

The 20-year-old center acts his age and has a kid-like joy. He has a smile filled with braces and an endearing cartoonish laugh that not even the Pelicans' sinking season has spoiled.

"That's exactly what he is — a kid," DeAndre Jordan, who won a title with Jokic in 2023 and is now mentoring Queen in New Orleans, told ESPN. "He still got a little baby fat."

Rookie Derik Queen's emergence a bright spot for Pelicans

Rookie Derik Queen has delivered for the New Orleans Pelicans in their otherwise difficult start to this season.

Derik Queen becomes the 5th rookie to notch a 30-point triple-double (33 pts, 10 reb, 10 ast) before his 21st birthday.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — When Pelicans rookie Derik Queen missed a late shot for the lead against the San Antonio Spurs, New Orleans guard Jose Alvarado hustled over to him and pushed his palm up under his chin in an expression of encouragement.

The Pelicans felt Queen had nothing to be ashamed of after recording his first NBA triple double — 33 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists — in just his 25th game.

Spurs Notes: Harper, Fox, Castle, Wembanyama

No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper helped lead the Spurs to a victory over New Orleans on Monday with a 22-point, six-assist outing, proving that he can be successful in his role even when De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle are both available. Still, as Jeff McDonald of The San Antonio Express-News (subscription required) writes, it was evident with all three of those guards were healthy and active for the first time this season that there are still some kinks to work out in the backcourt.

While Harper thrived, Castle showed some rust in his first game back from a hip injury, making just 5-of-15 shots and turning the ball over three times in 23 minutes. Meanwhile, McDonald suggests that Fox seemed “unsure of when to assert himself” — the former All-Star scored just 14 points on 4-of-11 shooting and committed four turnovers.
