Australia’s greatest staying mare Makybe Diva died of a sudden colic attack on Saturday morning. She was aged 27.

Makybe Diva became the first horse in Australian history to win three Melbourne Cups – the first for trainer David Hall in 2003 and following up for the Freedman brothers in 2004 and 2005.

She became synonymous with jockey Glen Boss who rode the mare in all of her Cup wins as well as partnering her to victory in the 2005 Cox Plate.

Horse racing: Greg Miles – I don't think we'll ever see it again

Race caller Greg Miles called legendary horse Makybe Diva's three consecutive Melbourne Cup wins, immortalising the mare with the line 'when a champion becomes a legend.'

Following Makybe Diva's death, he joins Lehmo and Sam to reflect on her career. He says her extraordinary feat is something unlikely to be replicated again.

The three-time Melbourne Cup champion passed away Saturday following a sudden colic attack, a gastrointestinal issue which affects horses.

Makybe Diva was reportedly living in retirement at Santic's property at Gnarwarre, where she died. Owner Tony Santic had famously announced the mare's immediate retirement after her third successive triumph at Flemington in 2005.

"From the day she came into our lives, she was never just a racehorse, she was family," Santic said in a statement. "She gave us moments Australia will never forget, but more than that, she gave us joy every single day."

    5. Royal Exile has the benefit of racing experience, and he did beat older horses in good fashion at Taree just before Christmas. If there’s a concern it is that he was quite green, baulking on the post, but he showed a nice turn of foot to pick them up from midfield. If he’s learnt from that, and can be handy to the pace, he could get away with it. Wary of the Waterhouse-Bott colt 4. Proton, which has trialled twice over the 850m or thereabouts and there was significant improvement into the second. Imagine he leads from the inside gate and the 1200m will suit. There was nothing wrong with the latest trial by 3. Gold Globe over 1030m. He looked to lengthen quite well late there. It might be a bit too soon for 2. Audit, looking at his latest trial, but it is a small field and he could run well. How to play it: Royal Exile to win.
