Two cloud arms, with troughs extending from the low, are bringing storms to south and eastern WA and are expected to continue to do so as the system travels east.

Weather news: Ocean nears record heat as one state warned of a stormy Spring

A record-breaking El Niño is rapidly heating up the Pacific Ocean with experts warning that NSW could be in for a severe storm season.

With sea temperatures in the central tropical Pacific Ocean nearing record-highs, experts have warned the massive climate driver will produce far-reaching impacts both at sea and on land over the coming months.

Experts are warning NSW to brace for a stormy Spring.  Dean Sewell

Authorities are warning NSW residents must remain on high-alert as the state enters a high-risk weather season.

It follows an unusually warm winter with below-average, dry climate drivers typically bring hotter conditions, but forecasters warn severe weather can still abruptly ignite.

Typhoon Noul: 150 flights cancelled in Hong Kong as T3 remains in effect

Observatory says Noul has intensified and is forecast to come within 100km of Hong Kong on Sunday morning

The Hong Kong Observatory will issue the No 8 typhoon signal at 10.10pm on Saturday as Typhoon Noul barrels towards the region, with more than 380 flights cancelled and winds associated with the storm causing a scaffolding collapse.

The forecaster said that Noul had intensified and was forecast to come within 100km (62 miles) of the city on Sunday morning, with rain and strong winds associated with the storm already affecting the city.

It said it would issue the No 8 signal at 10.10pm, while a “Pre-No 8 Special Announcement” would be sent out two hours beforehand.

China evacuates 20,000 people as Typhoon Noul nears

Authorities have evacuated more than 20,000 people and suspended rail services as Typhoon Noul approaches southern China, with flight cancellations announced in the financial hub of Hong Kong.

The typhoon is forecast to make landfall in the coastal area stretching from Hong Kong to Guangdong province between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, China's National Meteorological Center said.

The Chinese weather forecaster maintained an orange typhoon alert on Saturday, the second-highest level in its four-tier system.

Parts of Guangdong and neighbouring Hunan and Jiangxi provinces are set to receive heavy rainfall from Saturday to Monday, it said.

When the typhoon makes landfall, it is forecast to have maximum sustained winds of 126-151 kilometres per hour (78-94 miles per hour).

Rain showers delay the start of the first India-Afghanistan one-day cricket match

Rain has delayed the toss and the start of the first match of a three-match one-day international series between India and Afghanistan

DHARAMSHALA, India — Rain has delayed the toss and the start of the first match of a three-match one-day international series between India and Afghanistan on Saturday.

It is the first bilateral ODI cricket series between the countries. The teams have only met at World Cups and Asia Cups in the one-day format, with India winning three of the four matches and the other ending in a tie.

India comes into the match having lost three of its past five ODIs while Afghanistan has won four in a row. Last week, India completed an innings and 300-run win over Afghanistan in a one-off test inside three days.

Gurbaz hits ton but Afghanistan 194 all out in rain-hit India ODI

Dharamsala (India) (AFP) – Skipper Shubman Gill's unbeaten 84 and inspired bowling led India to an emphatic seven-wicket win over Afghanistan in a rain-reduced 25-overs-a-side ODI contest on Saturday.

Chasing 195 for victory, India needed on Gill's 66-ball knock to achieve the target with 13 balls to spare in Dharamsala and lead the three-match series 1-0.

The bi-lateral series is the first between the two nations in the 50-over format.

Afghanistan posted 194 all out despite opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz's 102 as the rest of the batting faltered after the match started four hours and 15 minutes late due to persistent rain.

Indian debutants Gurnoor Brar, a fast bowler, and Harsh Dubey, a left-arm-spinner, took three wickets each to bowl out Afghanistan in 24.5 overs after Gurbaz's ninth ODI century.

Afghanistan and India are set to meet on Saturday in the first of three scheduled one-day international cricket matches in June between the two countries.

Aizaz Alvi from the Michigan Warriors Cricket Club bowls to Anik Chowdhury of the Killers Cricket Club as umpire Kiran Nettem looks on during the Michigan Cricket Association 2025 T20 grand final at the Lasky Recreation Center in Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2025.

These two nations met earlier this month in a one-off test, with India prevailing by an innings and 300 runs. Now, Afghanistan will look to get revenge in these ODIs.

India comes into this match on a fairly long win streak, having won five consecutive matches, with its last loss coming in World Cup play in February, when the team lost to South Africa in the Super 8 stage before going on to win the T20 World Cup against New Zealand.

The driest belt of Australia is in the middle of its wettest month in decades, and weather modelling is tipping the outback rain will reach southern Australia this weekend.

For some parts of South Australia and Victoria in drought, the rain could arrive just in time to prevent the driest summer in more than 100 years.

Adelaide has seen a paltry 6 millimetres this season, currently the lowest summer total since 1906, while Melbourne's 46mm is running at a 23-year low.

Dramatic changes in upper atmosphere are responsible for recent droughts and bushfires: new research

Over the past decade, southern Australia has suffered numerous extreme weather and climate events, such as record-breaking heatwaves, bushfires, two major droughts and even flash flooding.

While Australia has always had these disasters, our research reveals these new extremes are the result of dramatic climate-driven changes in the upper atmosphere above Australia.

Rain relief finally on the way to drought hit south-east

Substantial rain is on the horizon for drought affected parts of Australia's south-east, bringing welcome relief for struggling locals.

Large parts of South Australia and Victoria are within their driest two-year spell on record, but substantial rain is on the horizon.

The best falls in more than a year on the way for some parts, bringing welcome relief for struggling locals.

Australia is coming towards the end of its fifth La Nina event in the last six years – with just one El Nino in that time.

It’s been the longest spell on record without a neutral year.

In fact, all of the most recent six years have exceeded Australia’s 1961-1990 average.

Rain and storms forecast for QLD after record-breaking outback drenching

As skies clear over central Australia, a rain band is shifting to the eastern seaboard. (Supplied: Pete Fisher)

Heavy rain will continue to drench parts of eastern Australia this weekend, with a risk of flooding around a number of rivers.

The weather system responsible has arrived from the outback where this month has already brought the highest rain totals in up to 15 years.

This rare desert drenching is the result of an intrusion of very humid tropical air — an airmass which is now over Queensland where it will stall for several days.

It has been an incredible week of rain and storms across central Australia.

Flash flooding and swollen rivers could be in store for south-east Queensland, as the Bureau of Meteorology warns of more rain.

After a steamy week with maximum temperatures in the mid-30s, storms brought a cool change overnight, dumping up to 76 millimetres of rain in parts of the Scenic Rim and dropping Friday’s forecast high to just 25 degrees in Brisbane.

Widespread falls across the south-east ranged between 20 millimetres and 60 millimetres from Thursday afternoon to Friday, with storms from central parts of Queensland moving to the coast.

Even more rain was recorded on either side of south-east Queensland, with parts of northern NSW receiving nearly 180 millimetres from 9am on Thursday to 5am on Friday, and Mount Playfair in central Queensland copping 100 millimetres.
