For audiences flocking to The Sheep Detectives and helping make the murder mystery comedy one of the sleeper (or should that be sheeper?) hits of the year, the question isn’t so much whodunit as how’d they do it?
Real as they look, every ewe, ram and lamb reared lovingly by loner shepherd George (Hugh Jackman) on his bucolic farm in Somerset is a fully digital creation. And while the film is an English production, many of those animals were created here, by a team that has done its best to raise the bar on visual effects.

Prime Video has announced one of Amazon MGM Studios' best movies of 2026 will make its streaming premiere this week, and we're not talking Project Hail Mary. Instead, we're talking sheep. The Sheep Detectives will start streaming on Prime Video on Wednesday, June 24.
Hugh Jackman helped make the announcement in a very "Baaaahh!"-filled video on X. Jackman plays George, a shepherd who is found dead one day. A few members of his flock of sheep set off to dig into the case and help the small town's only police officer with his investigation of George's suspicious death. There are multiple conniving suspects, a bevy of good jokes, and even a dramatic will-reading scene — if you ever wanted a version of Knives Out that starred sheep, then The Sheep Detectives is for you.

Hugh Jackman leads woolly whodunnit THE SHEEP DETECTIVES
Based on Leonie Swann’s bestselling novel Three Bags Full, The Sheep Detectives is an Amazon MGM Studios production directed by Kyle Balda from a screenplay and screen story by Craig Mazin.
Jackman stars as George, a shepherd who regularly reads detective stories to his sheep each evening, convinced the flock cannot possibly understand the mysteries unfolding in the pages.
When a mysterious incident unsettles the farm and disrupts their quiet routine, the sheep begin following clues and examining the humans around them as they attempt to uncover what has happened.
Joining Jackman in the film are Emma Thompson, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, Tosin Cole and Hong Chau.
