‘A rare indulgence’: why Black Swan is my feelgood movie

The latest in our series of writers explaining their go-to comfort films is a tribute to Darren Aronofsky’s dark and unusually satisfying ballet nightmare

In early 2011, sometime after the film was released on home video, I sat down with mum to watch what she had heard was a “new ballet movie” by Darren Aronofsky. I was 12 years old, spending school nights training to be a professional dancer. Without any warmup, knowing very little of the pointe work that earned Natalie Portman her best actress Oscar, we pressed play on Black Swan.

Well before Brendan Fraser’s time on the couch and the many houseguests of Mother!, Aronofsky increased the wattage with a companion piece to follow his heavy-hitter, The Wrestler. Watching Nina Sayers’ (Portman) intense physical trials and her stilted sexual awakening, with my mum beside me, I was understandably disturbed. At this point in my adolescence, I thought Jumanji was a scary movie. Like the film’s injured bird, I was being introduced to a darkness I didn’t understand. And somehow I couldn’t get enough. Why did it feel so good?

The Dockers achieved a rare feat. Now, history is on their side in the GF

Check out how teams who stage preliminary final comebacks fare in deciders

IT IS often said they are the hardest games to win, and Fremantle made its preliminary final task even more challenging on Friday night.

So, what does history say about teams that recover from hefty deficits in preliminary finals?

The Dockers trailed at every break at the SCG on Friday night before surging past Sydney in an enthralling clash to book the club's second ever Grand Final appearance.

Since the finals format was introduced in 2000, Freo is just the seventh team to win a preliminary final after trailing at three-quarter time.

Thousands of seats on flights added for AFL grand final after Lions victory

Major airlines have added thousands of extra seats to help fans attend the AFL grand final next weekend, following the Brisbane Lions’ victory on Saturday night.

The Lions advanced to the grand final after defeating Hawthorn in a dramatic nine-point win, which resulted in Hawks fans throwing bottles at umpires.

They will play the Fremantle Dockers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground next Saturday, after the Dockers beat the Sydney Swans by 12 points on Friday night.

If the Lions win, it will be their third finals victory in a row after defeating the Geelong Cats last year and Sydney the year before. They also made the finals in 2023, losing by four points to Collingwood.

Fremantle’s night of nights as they overrun Sydney and seal spot in second AFL grand final

Minor premiers to meet Hawthorn or Brisbane in grand final at the MCG

The Fremantle Football Club have never had a night like this. They’ve never been forced this deep down the well to win a big game. They’ve never had so much thrown at them. They’ve never been in such a hostile environment. They’ve never, in a big game, flipped so quickly from a meek, nervy, fumbly team to an offensive powerhouse.

All year they have demonstrated that they can run out games well, and that they can slam on a lot of goals in a short amount of time. They were awful here in the first half. But they showed signs of life after the main break. Some hard-fought stoppage wins culminated in a superb Jye Amiss goal, before Luke Jackson marked a dump kick and converted from 50m. But Sydney cancelled the two goals out immediately.

Perth shark attack: Rare kill order issued as victim identified as Greg O'Neill

A rare catch-and-kill order has been issued for a great white shark off the coast of Western Australia after 63-year-old swimmer Greg O'Neill was killed at a popular beach on Friday. His body has still not been found.

Authorities have said that beaches along the state's coast, including in the capital Perth, will remain closed until at least Sunday as the search for the shark continues.

It is the second shark attack in Western Australia (WA) this week, and the third fatal attack in the state this year.

The incident, at Sorrento Beach in Perth's north, has reignited debate about how to keep beachgoers safe in Australia.

Swimmer killed in shark attack in front of horrified beachgoers in Australia: "I could see a pool of blood"

A man was killed by a shark as he swam off a Western Australian city beach Friday while beachgoers watched in horror.

Boats and helicopters searched the ocean off Sorrento Beach in Perth's northern suburbs after the late-morning attack, a police statement said. Police would not say whether potential remains had been found.

But police were confident the "swimmer died as a result of the attack," the statement said.

A witness to the attack, identified only as Darrel, told Nine Network television that the victim had been swimming with a now traumatized friend.

"I was just shocked. I mean, I feel for his mate. He's apologized and said 'I didn't save my mate,'" Darrel told Nine.

Do whales grieve? Rare footage of humpback alongside stillborn calf suggests they might

The behaviours we observed could represent grief, but they could also reflect maternal attachment, confusion or instinctive caregiving

One day last July, a newborn humpback whale calf lay motionless on the seafloor, just a kilometre off Australia’s Gold Coast. The encounter was captured through underwater video.

For more than an hour, the mother repeatedly returned to the same spot, gently touching the calf with her head and pectoral fin and resting beside it eye-to-eye. Our new research suggests this is the first described case of a humpback whale mother caring for her deceased newborn calf.

The encounter offers a rare window into one of the least understood aspects of whale behaviour: how these highly social animals respond to death.

'Pretty emotional': Rare video shows humpback whale with stillborn calf

A female humpback whale was filmed interacting with its stillborn calf in waters off the Gold Coast last year.

Researchers say the encounter was a rare example of the species showing "grieving behaviour".

Scientists say more documentation is needed to better understand humpback whales' response to death and stress.

A video of a female humpback whale and its stillborn calf, taken near the Gold Coast, is a rare glimpse into the species' reaction to death, researchers say.

The footage, filmed in waters off Palm Beach in July last year, shows a whale interacting with its deceased calf immediately after giving birth.

Do animals grieve? Rare footage of a mother and her calf may hold the answer

The sea was calm and the sky half-strewn with clouds on a winter’s morning at Palm Beach Reef, off the Gold Coast, when Andrew Mulville arrived by boat to check on two whales milling in the shallow water.

Members of the public had become worried that one of the humpbacks was injured or entangled, and reported their concerns to Sea World. Mulville, a whale rescue boat captain with the organisation, happened to be fishing nearby.

The whales weren’t hurt, he found, but were behaving strangely. An amniotic sack – part of a placenta – floated to the surface. Mulville dipped his GoPro underwater, and captured what researchers believe is the first detailed documentation of possible grief in a humpback whale over a stillborn calf.

Drone captures rare video of 'magical moment' whale birth

A humpback whale has been recorded giving birth to her calf in what is believed to be the first whale birth recorded filmed by a drone.

The sighting occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Kingscliff on the New South Wales North Coast.

The video footage is expected to be peer reviewed and published, contributing to whale research.

A drone operator has captured a rare sighting of a humpback whale giving birth on the New South Wales coast.

Drone pilot Alex Forrest is one of just four people to capture a whale giving birth, and the first to do so with a drone.

A drone pilot has captured what is believed to be only the fourth complete humpback whale birth ever recorded on film anywhere in the world, and the first ever documented by drone. While conducting aerial observations of migrating humpback whales off the NSW north coast for the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (Orrca), Alexander Forrest witnessed an adult female give birth in calm sea conditions, capturing the newborn calf's first moments of life, including its first breath and union with its mother

First drone footage of a humpback birth shows mum and bub thriving

The gender is not clear, but we do know the baby was born about 1pm somewhere off the coast of northern NSW, weighing a healthy 1.5 tonnes or so.

In what is thought to be a world first, a wildlife photographer has captured the birth of a humpback whale using a drone.

Alexander Forrest, a drone operator who works with ORRCA – the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia – was watching the whale migration from above on Monday when he noticed a plume of blood rise in the water next to a whale that was alone there.

Moments later the calf appeared, and was soon hoisted to the ocean’s surface to aid it as it takes its first breaths.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration is warning of a rare but serious eye disorder that could be caused by GLP-1-based drugs.

It says people taking these drugs should be alert to any vision loss and seek urgent medical attention if they notice any changes.

The association for optometrists says patients should not be unnecessarily alarmed and can continue using the medications if they have no symptoms.

TGA issues new warning after finding link between GLP-1 medicines Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro to eye disorder

Australia’s medicine regulator has issued a safety warning over popular weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, saying they could cause a rare vision disorder.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration warned the GLP-1 RA class of medicines have the potential to cause a rare, but severe, form of eye disorder called non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

The disorder may result in permanent visual impairment, including blindness. There is currently no treatment for it.

The TGA urges any patients who experience sudden vision loss, even if only partial, should seek urgent medical attention.

The regulator revealed a potential link between GLP-1 RAs and NAION was first discovered in July 2024 following a JAMA Ophthalmology study.

Queen Mary offers a rare glimpse inside the Danish royal family's idyllic summer retreat

As King Frederik X and Queen Mary settle into their annual summer residence at Gråsten Palace, the Danish Royal House shared a series of peaceful photographs capturing the slower pace of royal life in southern Denmark.

The collection, simply captioned "Summer in Gråsten," features everything from horseback rides through the countryside to elegant swans gliding across the palace grounds, offering followers an unusually intimate look at the family's seasonal retreat.

Among the sweetest moments are snapshots of the royal family's two beloved Border Collies, Grace and Coco, relaxing beneath the shade of towering trees, while another image shows a graceful swan accompanied by fluffy cygnets near one of the palace's lakes.

China conducts rare submarine-launched ballistic missile test, angering Pacific neighbors

China on Monday conducted a rare test of a submarine-launched ballistic missile in the Pacific Ocean, sparking criticism from New Zealand and Australia for actions that they said threatened peace and stability in the region.

A People’s Liberation Army Navy submarine “launched a strategic missile carrying a dummy warhead toward relevant high seas of the Pacific Ocean, which landed precisely within the designated waters,” said a statement from Senior Capt. Wang Xuemeng, a spokesperson for the PLA Navy.

“This test launch was a routine part of China’s annual military training schedule,” said Wang, who added that “relevant nations” were informed in advance about the test.
