‘Truly humbling’: Pies superstar in rare air as courageous skipper doubles up

Pies up for AFL Players' Awards

Multiple Magpies are in the running for a suite of AFL Players' Awards announced on Tuesday night.

Nick Daicos' bid for back-to-back AFL MVP trophies is the headline story out of the Club's nominations for the 2026 AFL Players Associations awards, set to be announced on Tuesday night's AFL Awards.

Daicos has been nominated alongside brother Josh and key defender Billy Frampton as the Pies' trio for the top gong, which recognises the best player in the league according to the current playing cohort.

Daicos took out the award in 2025 in what was his first Leigh Matthews Trophy.

His season averaging a league-high 34.9 disposals has him in strong contention, while his brother's season average of 27.2 touches and Frampton's breakout campaign have seen the pair also rewarded with recognition.

Host of Hawks in the running for AFLPA Awards

Jai Newcombe, James Sicily, Jarman Impey, Nick Watson, Jack Dalton and Josh Battle have all been nominated for various awards.

A host of Hawks have been nominated for a series of AFL Players’ Association Awards following stellar 2026 seasons.

Star defender Jarman Impey, electric forward Nick Watson and inspirational co-captain Jai Newcombe are in the mix to win the AFL Players’ Most Valuable Player Award.

Impey’s run off half-back powered the Hawks into attack throughout the year, with impressive averages of 23.6 disposals, seven marks and 4.5 rebound 50s telling the story of his success.

Watson has consistently turned heads inside 50 this season with his breakneck speed, mercurial goal sense and admirable courage, finishing with 55 majors from his 21 games in 2026.

First drone footage of a humpback birth shows mum and bub thriving

The gender is not clear, but we do know the baby was born about 1pm somewhere off the coast of northern NSW, weighing a healthy 1.5 tonnes or so.

In what is thought to be a world first, a wildlife photographer has captured the birth of a humpback whale using a drone.

Alexander Forrest, a drone operator who works with ORRCA – the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia – was watching the whale migration from above on Monday when he noticed a plume of blood rise in the water next to a whale that was alone there.

Moments later the calf appeared, and was soon hoisted to the ocean’s surface to aid it as it takes its first breaths.

TGA issues new warning after finding link between GLP-1 medicines Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro to eye disorder

Australia’s medicine regulator has issued a safety warning over popular weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, saying they could cause a rare vision disorder.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration warned the GLP-1 RA class of medicines have the potential to cause a rare, but severe, form of eye disorder called non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

The disorder may result in permanent visual impairment, including blindness. There is currently no treatment for it.

The TGA urges any patients who experience sudden vision loss, even if only partial, should seek urgent medical attention.

The regulator revealed a potential link between GLP-1 RAs and NAION was first discovered in July 2024 following a JAMA Ophthalmology study.
