Aussie crisis reaches new heights as 1am queue balloons with 'new faces'

An Australian charity is warning that a growing number of people are lining up from the early hours of the morning to access food and essential support, after more than 3.4 million households experienced food insecurity over the past year.

Ann Cooper, founder and volunteer of South Australian not-for-profit group Cos We Care, told Yahoo News that demand for the weekly service has increased significantly in recent years, with more people relying on it.

The group provides free food, clothing and essential support to people experiencing homelessness and financial hardship through its weekly outreach service at Fremont Park in Elizabeth, in Adelaide's northern suburbs.

US gas reaches $4.30 per gallon; Trump says prices will drop after Iran war

Price of petrol in US jumps by nearly 30 cents in one week amid Strait of Hormuz blockade and Iran diplomatic deadlock.

The average price of one gallon (3.8 litres) of gasoline in the United States has reached $4.30, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA), up from less than $3 before the February 28 start of the US-Israel war on Iran.

Thursday’s prices come as US President Donald Trump insists that time is on his side in the standoff with Iran, even as he refuses Tehran’s offers of a preliminary deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

According to AAA, prices for gas or petrol went up by 27 cents over the past week amid the deepening impasse, with Iran blocking the strait and the US imposing a naval siege on Iranian ports.

The Filipina tennis sensation continued her impressive run at the BNP Paribas Open with a stunning 6-2, ret. victory over world number four Coco Gauff on Monday morning at Indian Wells Tennis Garden, advancing to the Round of 16.

The win comes just weeks after Gauff dealt Eala a dominant defeat in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Both players struggled to settle early as serve proved difficult to hold. The first three service games were immediately traded through breaks, but Eala eventually found her rhythm in a grinding fourth game on Gauff's serve. The 20-year old Eala produced a sharp finishing burst from the baseline to secure her second break of the set – a turning point that shifted the momentum firmly in her favor.

Alexandra Eala is still dreaming big as she continued her perfect BNP Paribas Open debut on Sunday evening, moving into the fourth round after Coco Gauff was forced to retire.

Eala was on her way to winning the first set when her opponent, Gauff, took a medical timeout late in the set for a left arm injury. After going down a break in the second, Gauff chose not to continue, trailing 6-2, 2-0.

MELBOURNE, Australia — Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka defeated a tenacious Bai Zhouxuan of China 6-3, 6-1 Wednesday to reach the third round of the Australian Open.

Sabalenka raced to a 5-0 lead in the first but then needed seven set points at Rod Laver Arena to take the set against the defensive-minded Chinese player, who used clever drop shots to help her stay in the match.

"I was happy to get this win, a tricky opponent," Sabalenka said. "She really stepped in in the first set."

Aryna Sabalenka is crediting her long-lost mental demons for taking her tennis to new grand slam-winning heights after charging into the Australian Open third round in Melbourne.
