Record number of homeowners face loan default

Families are staring down a debt nightmare, with a record number of homeowners now at risk of defaulting on their loans after falling behind on their repayments, new industry data has revealed.

The figures showed the number of households at risk of default jumped 18 per cent nationally over the past three months, marking the steepest rise since risk tracking records began in 2001.

It’s raised fresh alarm over the pressure facing borrowers after three interest rate hikes this year, plus previous years of soaring living costs and stubborn inflation.

The research by Digital Finance Analytics, done for comparison group OurTop10, indicated households were running out of a buffer of emergency funds, leaving them vulnerable to more rate hikes.

National news: Mortgage stress rises to highest level in two years

More than a million Aussie borrowers could find themselves trapped in a “mortgage prison” as extreme repayment stress jumps to highest level since 2024 – and it’s lower-income households who are copping the brunt.

According to new Roy Morgan research, the nationwide rise is being driven primarily by households earning less than $100,000 and those in lower socio-economic brackets.

The data found an estimated 1.06 million mortgage holders (19.8 per cent) were ‘Extremely at Risk’ of mortgage stress in the six months to June 2026, up from 16.7 per cent in December 2025, and now higher than in June 2024 (19.3 per cent).

Record-smashing El Niño points to spring of drought and fires

As El Niño strengthens at an alarming rate, all previous records in the modern era could be smashed. (ABC News)

El Niño is strengthening across the Pacific Ocean at an alarming rate and could annihilate all records in the modern era.

The rapid warming of our largest ocean is supplying additional heat into the Earth's atmosphere, contributing to a summer of extreme heatwaves and fires across Europe and North America.

But with El Niño still months away from peaking, its impact on global weather will intensify through the back half of 2026, including in Australia, raising the prospect of our hottest spring on record and a heightened risk of drought and fires.

How a super El Niño affects the global climate

From sharky shores and starving seabirds to droughts, wildfires, and floods.

On June 11, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued an El Niño advisory after temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean remained higher than average for several months. Declaring an El Niño isn’t out of the ordinary, as they happen in cycles every two to seven years. But this one could be extraordinary.

Some are calling it a “super” or “Godzilla” El Niño, and the NOAA predicts an 81 percent chance that it could develop to a “very strong” level, rivaling the historic and devastating El Niños of 1982-1983 and 1997-1998. Experts are predicting it will likely reach its peak this winter and into 2027, bringing heat, rainfall, and other potential extreme weather events.

As the chances of a ‘super’ El Niño continue to rise — now 81%, according to federal scientists — researchers are looking back to 2015 and 2016, when a Pacific heat wave combined with a strong El Niño threw some of the West Coast’s most important commercial fishing fleets into turmoil.

They say we could be looking at a repeat. Or worse.

“I think we’re likely to break global temperature records with this next El Niño,” said Malin Pinsky, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UC Santa Cruz. “So it’s very concerning and it is likely to have very big impacts on marine fisheries.”

Australians face record-high rents as agents see 'enquiries flooding in'

Domain says there has been renewed acceleration in rental growth across Australia's capitals. (ABC News: Gian De Poloni)

Domain's latest rental market report has revealed a renewed acceleration in rental growth across Australia's capital cities.

Combined capital city house rents increased by $20 over the June quarter, lifting annual growth to its strongest pace in almost two years.

The rental market is expected to remain tight in the coming months as government policy changes, low supply and interest rates affect rental affordability.

Australians are paying record-high rents across all the capital cities as low vacancy rates mean tenants are facing "a landlord's market".

The Perth suburbs where rent rose the most

Perth tenants are now paying record prices for rentals this quarter with the median price for a house in Perth reaching $750 – $50 more than the same time last year, as the market cements itself as the third most expensive in the country.

WA residents are now paying $150 more per week than those seeking to rent a home in Melbourne, while units have also risen to a median price of $700 per week.

However, Domain’s latest Rent Report revealed on Thursday that despite the high prices across Western Australia, the market has risen significantly slower than other states.

Over the June quarter, Perth’s rents lifted by 0.4 per cent – the equivalent of $3 per week and the least amount of all Australian states. Sydney house rents led the pack, surging by 6.3 per cent ($50) to $850 per week, followed by Darwin which saw a rise of 5.6 per cent ($40) to $760 a week.

‘It’s a lot’: Sydney renters overwhelmed amid record rent rises

Insurance pricing analyst Suvitti Deo has been forced to move several times since she relocated from Canberra to Sydney nearly three years ago, and with each apartment lease, she’s been required to pay a little bit more.

“It’s the biggest expense I have. It’s 40 per cent of what I earn each week. Yeah, it’s a lot. I wish I was paying a lot less than what I’m paying now,” the 25-year-old said.

Australian marathon record broken as 20-year drought ends

Haftu Strintzos broke the Australian marathon record and became the first Australian man to win the Gold Coast Marathon in 20 years, in a remarkable run in crisp, sunny conditions on Sunday morning.

Not even an hour earlier, Cameron Myers had scored a dominant victory in the men’s mile at the prestigious Prefontaine Classic in the United States – and become the outright national record holder in the process.

The clock read 2:06:20 when Strintzos breasted the tape to win the Gold Coast Marathon.

In a gutsy and pulsating dash to the finish line, it was touch and go whether the Ethiopian-born Aussie would knock off Andy Buchanan’s national record.

Haftu Strintzos has broken the Australian record while becoming the first Australian man to win the Gold Coast Marathon in 20 years.

Strintzos strode through the finish line tape in a blistering 2:06:20 on Sunday, bettering previous holder Andy Buchanan's record set in Valencia, Spain in 2024 by two seconds.

It's just the third time in the last 40 years that the Australian milestone has tumbled and the first time it has happened on home soil in that period.

Can Osaka push Sabalenka even further than she did in Paris (if Sabalenka gets past Jelena Ostapenko later)? In this form, yes I think she can. And I think she’d have the majority of the crowd on her side too, not only because of her popularity (a combination of her walk-on looks/her vulnerability in having been so open about her mental health in the past), but also because she’d be the underdog. And Wimbledon does love an underdog.

The Historic Pelé Record Lionel Messi Could Break At The 2026 FIFA World Cup

Lionel Messi already secured his place among the greatest players in World Cup history after leading Argentina to glory at Qatar 2022, but the Argentine captain could still break another legendary record at football’s biggest tournament.

The superstar is preparing for what is expected to be his sixth and final FIFA World Cup, an achievement historic on its own, but one that also presents him with the opportunity to surpass one of the last major records still belonging to Pelé.

And surprisingly, the record is not about goals, but rather a statistic that highlights the incredible ability both legends possess to influence matches on the biggest stage: World Cup assists.

Lionel Messi chases World Cup scoring record: How far is Cristiano Ronaldo from the highest mark?

Lionel Messi is gearing up for what could be the final World Cup campaign of his legendary career, and with it comes a golden opportunity to shatter Miroslav Klose’s historic record as the tournament’s all-time leading goal scorer. As Messi edges closer to the monumental milestone, fans worldwide are left wondering exactly where his eternal rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, stands in comparison.

To this day, the standard belongs exclusively to former German striker Klose. The clinical frontman racked up a staggering 14-year legacy, netting 16 goals across four consecutive tournament editions (2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014).

Messi enters the tournament with the German icon firmly in his crosshairs. The Argentine captain has accumulated 13 World Cup goals across four editions (2006, 2014, 2018, and 2022). Remarkably, his tally stands where it is despite a surprising scoreless campaign in 2010, when Argentina was unceremoniously dumped out of the tournament by Germany in the quarterfinals.

Man Utd's Fernandes sets new outright Premier League assist record

London (AFP) – Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes set a new outright record of 21 assists in a single Premier League season when he set up Patrick Dorgu's goal against Brighton on Sunday.

The match, on the final day of the Premier League campaign, was still goalless when Dorgu powered in a 33rd-minute header from Fernandes's corner at the Amex Stadium.

Dorgu's goal gave Fernandes sole possession of a record he had shared with Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, both of whom managed 20 assists in a Premier League season.

And after Bryan Mbeumo had doubled United's lead, Portugal midfielder Fernandes made it 3-0 in the 48th minute with his ninth league goal of the season — a low shot drilled into the bottom corner from Dorgu's pass.

That’s where we’ll leave things this evening. Thanks for reading. I hope you have a great weekend, wherever you are. Here are our top stories from today:

A 52-year-old Victorian police officer, Matt Paton, was confirmed to have died on the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, while he was on holiday in Peru with his wife, Jane. Mike Bush, the chief commissioner of Victoria police, said Paton would be remembered “for his selflessness, amazing sense of humour, extreme kindness and inclusion of all”.

The senior federal government MP Tanya Plibersek, labelled the behaviour by Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir towards humanitarian activists as “shameful” and “disgraceful”, as Australians who were on the Gaza flotilla alleged they were abused.

The Sydney protest that led to a record number of complaints against police

A record 800-plus complaints were received over the way NSW Police handled Sydney’s anti-Herzog protest, as the watchdog described the organisation as obstructive and overly defensive.

The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission’s Chief Commissioner Peter Johnson, SC, appeared before a parliamentary committee hearing on Friday advocating for greater powers to obtain documents from police to prevent delays in crucial misconduct investigations.

Allegations of police heavy-handedness at the February protest against visiting Israeli President Isaac Herzog led to the largest volume of complaints received by the LECC on a single issue. The watchdog is investigating the use of force by police on the night, and will consider future improvements in police responses to protests.

Guzman y Gomez, the Mexican-themed fast food chain, is pulling out of the United States in a spectacular turnaround on its American market ambitions, AAP reports.

The decision was made because the financial performance of the US business was not acceptable or meeting targets.

“I have always been confident in the differentiation of our food and guest experience, however this was not translating to an improvement in sales momentum,” founder and co-chief executive Steven Marks said.

Guzman’s US experiment lasted about six years, after it opened its first store in Chicago in January 2020.
