    Sale of Providence House believed to be the most expensive on record in London

    Nick Candy, the honorary treasurer of Reform UK and a major donor, has sold his mansion in the Chelsea district of London for a reported £275m.

    The property developer declined to comment on the transaction, which was first reported by Bloomberg, but it is believed to be the most expensive on record in London and one of the biggest in the world.

    Providence House was the location of a fundraising event for Donald Trump in 2024, attended by the US president’s son Donald Trump Jr.

    The buyer of the Grade II-listed mansion, located in the grounds of Royal Chelsea Hospital with a lake and a swimming pool, has not been made public.

    Nick Candy has sold his family home in London’s exclusive Chelsea district to an unnamed buyer for more than £270 million ($517 million), believed to be the biggest single house sale in history.

    The British entrepreneur’s property is located on a two-acre site that once accommodated the residence of Britain’s first prime minister, Robert Walpole. It has been landscaped to emulate a grand country estate.

    Social media posts by Candy’s design company show a lake and swimming pool in the grounds, along with original Georgian details inside the property.

    Ex-Cyclone Narelle expected to reform, possibly curve back to coast

    Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds as it crosses into Western Australia.

    A warning zone has been declared between Mitchell Plateau and the WA/NT border, but community leaders say they are well prepared.

    The Bureau of Metereology says the tropical low could redevelop into a cyclone as it moves west. 

    Heavy rain and strong winds are expected along the northern West Australian coast as ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle moves west, with the potential for it to re-intensify into a cyclone by Wednesday.

    An ex-tropical cyclone that smacked into the Queensland coast as a category 4 system has crossed the top of the nation and could re-intensify off WA’s north-west later this week.

    The storm formerly known as Tropical Cyclone Narelle is currently a tropical low sitting above the waters north of Wyndham, at the very edge of WA’s border with the Northern Territory.

    It’s predicted to cross the tip of the Kimberley before re-intensifying to a category 1 tropical cyclone off the coast of Broome late on Tuesday.

    However, the Bureau of Meteorology predicted there was a “high chance” the cyclone could strengthen to a category 3 system by late Wednesday, even reaching category 4 strength on Thursday as it traverses the waters off the Pilbara coast.

    A sodden town has been warned it is "not out of the woods yet" despite avoiding significant further damage from a fast-moving storm.

    The Northern Territory on Monday farewelled former tropical cyclone Narelle as it barrelled toward Western Australia, triggering rain and wind warnings as it headed into the Kimberley.

    Trees were toppled and power was cut across the Top End but the system caused less damage as it travelled west than was first feared.

    Communities in Australia’s far north were again on flood alert as ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle continued its destructive westward journey on Monday, with forecasts suggesting the system could re-intensify and potentially threaten the Perth region this weekend.

    Narelle had weakened to a tropical low system on Monday after bringing heavy rain to already-saturated parts of the Northern Territory over the weekend.

    But Bureau of Meteorology forecasts show the system tracking into the Indian Ocean on Tuesday evening and then travelling south parallel to the Western Australia coastline and regaining strength to become a severe cyclone by Wednesday evening.

    Labor has given one of its strongest signals yet the capital gains tax discount will be reworked in the May budget, with a parliamentary inquiry finding the Howard-era settings are helping fuel intergenerational inequality in Australia’s housing market.

    A Greens-led parliamentary inquiry said the 50% discount “skewed the ownership of housing away from owner-occupiers and towards investors”.

    “The benefits of the capital gains tax discount are also unequally distributed, with implications for income and wealth inequality and intergenerational inequality,” the report released on Tuesday found.

    UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has sacked one-time leadership rival Robert Jenrick from her senior policy team and suspended ​him from the party, saying he was plotting to defect.

    Nigel Farage, the leader of the populist Reform UK party, said the two men ⁠had held discussions about him joining the party.

    Jenrick lost to Badenoch in the 2024 contest to lead the main opposition party after their crushing general election defeat and was then, in an effort to reunite the party, given the role of justice spokesman.
