Australians to share in a $270,000 refund from Origin Energy

Thousands of Australians will share in a hefty payout after one of the country’s largest energy retailers was accused of misleading customers on the cost of its plans.

Origin Energy will refund $270,000 spread across more than 4500 customers after the consumer watchdog analysed claims that the company may have misrepresented some of its pricing options.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) began the investigation after a complaint from consumer advocacy group CHOICE.

The group accused Origin of telling customers its “Ongoing Saver” plan was cheaper on a long-term basis than the “Basic” plan.

Refunds have been promised to more than 4500 Origin Energy customers following a consumer watchdog probe into misleading power plans.

The offer in question misleadingly implied ongoing savings despite some customers paying more than the basic plan, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission alleges.

Credits or refunds of roughly $60 will be available and the offending "Ongoing Saver" plan nixed.

$60 refund for thousands of Australians

Thousands of Australians will get a $60 refund from Origin Energy after the energy retailer overcharged 4500 customers.

According to the ACCC, some households who signed up to Origin's "ongoing savers" residential electricity plan were charged more than those on the "basic" energy plan.

This investigation began as part of the ACCC's response to Choice complaints that raised concerns about energy providers falsely representing value to consumers through confusing plan names.

Commissioner Anna Brakey said Origin's ongoing savers plan didn't have the value the name suggested.

"Energy plans are complex, and the mix of usage and supply charges makes it difficult for many consumers to assess potential savings," Ms Brakey said.

Rolling Loud Thailand refund delays trigger complaints online

A Thai TikToker and other online users called on the local organiser of Rolling Loud Thailand to explain delays in ticket refunds following the festival’s cancellation announcement in October last year.

Rolling Loud, a hip-hop music festival, debuted in Thailand in 2023. It later returned despite controversy over headliners being cancelled at the last minute before a show, according to the report.

In February last year, organisers announced the event would return for a third year. Rolling Loud Thailand was scheduled to take place at Legend Siam in Pattaya from November 14 to 16.

However, the festival’s official Instagram account later announced in October that the event was cancelled, citing circumstances beyond organisers’ control. The statement said all ticket buyers would receive a full refund through the platform used to purchase their tickets.

Mickey Rourke trying to refund $90K to fans who donated to ‘scam' fundraiser

After denouncing a fundraiser set up in his name, actor Mickey Rourke said Friday that he is now trying to return the donated money.

The actor said he is “upset and embarrassed” about the fundraiser in a social media post, calling the fundraising effort a “scam,” which raised more than $100,000.

“My attorney is doing everything in his power to make sure anyone who gave their hard earned money is quickly returned,” the actor said, adding that there was more than $90,000 to be returned as of Friday.

The campaign was launched last week after reports that Rourke had been served a notice to vacate his Beverly Grove home.

Mickey Rourke once again took to Instagram to address the GoFundMe fiasco launched by his manager following news that The Wrestler actor was facing eviction after being sued by his landlord.

“Vicious cruel godamm lie to hustle money using my fuckin name so motherfuckin enbarassing,” Rourke wrote on a social media post. “There will b severe repercussions to individual who did this very bad thing to me and anyone who knows me knows payback k will be goddamm severe!!!!!!”

The post was one in several the actor shared today, including one wishing his friend, fellow actor Eric Dane, who revealed his ALS diagnosis last year, well. In another, Rourke wrote in the caption alongside a black-and-white photo of himself that over $100,000 had been raised by “CONCERNED STRANGERS” and that his attorney was working on getting the money returned to donors. He added that there is still $90,000 that needs to refunded and urged people to get their money back. “THE PERSON WHO PULLED THIS CRAP SHOULDNT GET ONE FUCEN DOLLAR,” the actor wrote, and he said that his main concern at the moment was the wellbeing of Dane.

What Mickey Rourke plans to do with money raised in 'scam' fundraiser

For Mickey Rourke, there's no price tag on doing the right thing.

The Oscar-nominated actor, who claims he was the victim of a fraudulent GoFundMe fundraiser earlier this month, gave an update on the money fans raised in an Instagram post Thursday, Jan. 15.

A GoFundMe page created on Jan. 4 sought to raise $100,000 for "The Wrestler" star, 73, to help Rourke avoid the "threat of eviction from his home." A complaint filed in California in December accused the actor of owing $59,100 in unpaid rent at his Los Angeles residence. He was told to pay the rent he owes or move out within three days, the filing stated.
