    Damaging Winds in the Region – May 17th, 2026

    Multiple rounds of severe storms impacted the region on Sunday May 17th, 2026. Initially a few severe thunderstorms developed in south central South Dakota Sunday afternoon. This activity merged into a line of storms, producing hail up to golf ball size, up to 80 mph wind gusts, and a few brief tornadoes, tracking northeast from Burke and Wagner, SD to Sioux Falls to Worthington, MN. 

    Farther south, another line of severe storms tracked northeast through northeast Nebraska and northwest Iowa Sunday evening. This round of storms produced several brief tornadoes and damaging wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph with a few gusts approaching 90 mph across a swath from near Sioux City and Salix, Iowa to Kingsley, Cherokee, and Milford, IA. Flash flooding from multiple rounds of rain brought water over roads in Le Mars, IA as well. Local graduation ceremonies and celebrations were disrupted due to the coverage and timing of the storms.

    More Siouxland tornadoes confirmed from Sunday’s storms

    SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – The National Weather Service has released more information about Sunday’s tornadoes and we’re now aware of 16 tornadoes that touched down in Siouxland.

    There were two tornadoes in the Sioux City area. One south of Sergeant Bluff with unknown intensity, and one south of Whispering Creek rated an EF-0 (winds between 65 & 85 mph).

    There were several tornadoes rated as EF-1 (winds between 86 & 110 mph). The EF-1 tornado locations were Winnebago, Plover, Mallard, and Rockwell City.

    The EF-0 tornadoes were Emmetsburg, Graettinger, and south of Whispering Creek as mentioned above.

    There were many other damage reports documented from Sunday’s storms and those were caused by straight line winds from 60 to 80 mph with a few gusts to around 90 mph according to the National Weather Service.

    Saudi Arabia calls for deescalation in region, backs mediation efforts

    RIYADH: The Saudi government on Tuesday called for regional deescalation in the ongoing war between US and Israel on one side and Iran on the other, backing Pakistani mediation efforts to help bring the conflict to a resolution.
    “The Cabinet reviewed current regional developments, stressing the need for deescalation and supporting Pakistani mediation and diplomatic efforts to reach a political solution that spares the region further tension and instability,” the Saudi Press Agency reported. 
    “The Cabinet reiterated the importance of restoring the freedom of international navigation in the Strait of Hormuz to its normal state as it was before Feb. 28, ensuring the safe and unhindered passage of ships,” the report said.
    The Cabinet session in Jeddah was chaired by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
    The conflict has reignited this week after attacks by Iran rocked a ceasefire that began on April 8.
    On Monday, the UAE and Oman said Iran had fired drones and missiles toward their territory.
    The crown prince briefed ministers about his call with President of the UAE Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Prince Mohammed “condemned the Iranian attacks targeting the UAE and affirmed Saudi Arabia’s support for the UAE in its defense of its security and stability,” SPA said.
    The US also said they had destroyed six Iranian boats on Monday.
    Iran said it had struck a US frigate in the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed to shipping since the war began on Feb. 28, drastically impacting energy shipping causing oil and gas prices to soar.
    The escalation follows the US President Donald Trump’s announcement that the US military will help stranded ships traverse the Hormuz.
