    OpenAI on Thursday released GPT-5.5, its newest AI model, which the company calls its “smartest and most intuitive to use model” yet. The algorithm comes with increased capabilities in a multitude of areas, with OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman claiming that it also brings the company one step closer to the creation of OpenAI’s “super app.”

    On a call with journalists, Brockman said that the new model was a big advancement “towards more agentic and intuitive computing.”

    OpenAI on Thursday announced its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.5, which the company says is better at coding, using computers and pursuing deeper research capabilities.

    The launch comes less than two months after OpenAI released GPT 5.4, the latest sign of the breakneck pace of development that's driving the AI sector.

    "What is really special about this model is how much more it can do with less guidance," OpenAI President Greg Brockman said during a briefing with reporters on Thursday. "It can look at an unclear problem and figure out just what needs to happen next. It really, to me, feels like it's setting the foundation for how we're going to use computers, how we're going to do computer work going forward."

    If you’ve been clinging to iOS 18 to avoid Apple’s Liquid Glass interface, you may be aware that it comes with a security trade-off that exposes your iPhone to vulnerabilities already fixed in iOS 26. But in some good news, Apple is rolling out a fresh version of iOS 18 that will protect newer iPhones from the "DarkSword" attack. 

    DarkSword can remotely install malware on iPhones running iOS 18.4 to 18.7. Apple released a patch in December via iOS 18.7.3, but only for the iPhone XS and XR, which don't support iOS 26. Everyone else was encouraged to upgrade to iOS 26 to avoid DarkSword.

    The "DarkSword" attack, which can spread malware to unpatched iPhones, is now targeting potential victims through phishing emails.

    Email security provider Proofpoint warned of the threat after detecting the emails in customers' inboxes. They feature a link that leads to a malicious site hosting DarkSword, which abuses a range of iOS software vulnerabilities to remotely attack iPhones running iOS 18.4 to 18.7. 

    The phishing emails underscore the threat of DarkSword, an attack that was originally used by a handful of shadowy groups for cyberespionage and cybercrime. But last week, someone leaked the attack online, making it easy for anyone to adopt and potentially improve upon.

    Apple Music received the most changes in today’s update. There’s a new Playlist Playground feature for building playlists with AI, concert info for artists and your local area, a new fullscreen design for albums and playlists, and more.

    New emoji are another tentpole feature, with eight additions total: Ballet Dancer, Distorted Face, Fight Cloud, Hairy Creature, Landslide, Orca, Trombone, and Treasure Chest.

    Sun releases the largest solar radiation storm ‘in over 20 years,’ forecasters say

    Powerful solar activity released by the sun is heading for Earth and it’s likely to create dazzling auroral displays in unexpected areas Monday evening and early Tuesday morning. It could also disrupt satellite-based communications and GPS accuracy.

    A solar radiation storm, ranked at a level four out of five on a severity scale, is being tracked by the National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center, or SWPC.

    “An S4 severe solar radiation storm is now in progress – this is the largest solar radiation storm in over 20 years,” SWPC shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. “The last time S4 levels were observed was in October, 2003. Potential effects are mainly limited to space launch, aviation, and satellite operations.”

    A colossal coronal mass ejection (CME) has struck Earth, triggering severe (G4) geomagnetic storm conditions that could push the northern lights much farther south than usual tonight (Jan. 19–20). The impact, confirmed by NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, is already stirring Earth's magnetic field — setting the stage for a potentially spectacular aurora display across the northern U.S. and possibly beyond.

    NOAA confirmed that G4 (severe) geomagnetic storm levels were first reached at 2:38 p.m. EST (1938 GMT) on Jan. 19 following the shock arrival. The storm is ongoing, and NOAA says CME passage is expected to continue through the evening, with G4 conditions still possible. That means tonight's aurora prospects are even more promising — if skies are clear and the magnetic field orientation remains favorable.

    G4 (Severe) Geomagnetic Storm Watch for 20 January UTC-Day

    A G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm watch is in effect for the 20 January UTC-day due to Earth-arrival of a coronal mass ejection (CME). The CME blasted from the Sun on 18 Jan, in association with an energetic R3 (Strong) solar flare from a sunspot region near center-disk, and is anticipated to arrive at Earth as early as late 19 Jan EST to early 20 Jan. While the G4 Watch is out for the 20 Jan UTC-day, geomagnetic storm levels could range from G1-G3 (Minor-Moderate) upon CME arrival later on 19 Jan EST. CME passage is expected to continue through 20 Jan, but conditions are likely to weaken later in the day. G1 levels remain possible on 21 Jan due to residual CME related effects.
